COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS The goal of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills of a variety of team sports, individual sports and lifetime activities to make them well rounded individuals in society. *New York State mandates each student must successfully complete eight semesters (2 credit hours) of physical education for graduation. LEARNING GOALS OF THE COURSE Personal Health and Safety: Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health. a. Students will perform basic motor and manipulative skills. They will attain competency in a variety of physical activities and proficiency in a few select complex motor and sports activities. b. Students will design personal fitness programs to improve cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, and body composition.
Safe and Healthy Environment: Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment. a. Students will demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior while engaged in physical activity. They will understand that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and communication. b. Students will be able to identify safety hazards and react effectively to ensure a safe and positive experience for all participants.
Personal and Community Resources: Students understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources a. Students will be aware of and able to access opportunities available to them within their community to engage in physical activity. b. Students will be informed consumers and be able to evaluate facilities and programs. c. Students will be aware of some career options in the field of physical fitness and sports.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: READY, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE Academic Honesty: The Pioneer Central High School policy will be adhered to in all cases of academic misconduct. Plagiarism is a serious offense. All work is expected to be your own, original undertaking. Using another’s work, with or without their permission and attempting to pass it off as your own is never permitted and will be severely penalized. (Consequences for academic dishonesty will be given consistent with the Code of Conduct).
Statement Regarding Student Conduct: Preparing to become a graduate of Pioneer involves more than academic preparation in the classroom. Every day you need to demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors that are consistent with our Code of Conduct. All adults in our school will be watching to see that you are developing appropriate behavior and will provide you with feedback on your journey toward becoming world-class citizens.
Class Attendance and Active Participation: Be respectful of all students and teacher in class room. Be on time and prepared for class. At the end of class, all students will report to the locker rooms to change, and will remain in the locker room until the bell rings. Be respectful of each other’s views and lifestyles. Notify teacher of any accidents/injuries or limitations IMMEDIATELY!
Physical Education Make-up Procedure: If a student has an excused absent from a physical education class, he/she has an opportunity to make up missed classes. Calendars will be posted outside of each locker room, in the gymnasium, on the office doors of PE teachers, and on the televisions throughout the school.
Other: Materials required: Dress in shorts/sweatpants and T-shirt or sweatshirt for activity. These must be different from what you wore to school, and it cannot be a sports team uniform.
Medicals: Present a parental excuse note directly to your teacher when participation will be limited because of injury or illness, which is good for three consecutive school days. A physician’s medical note is required for any limitations longer than the three consecutive days. All physician medical notes should be given to school nurse. She will copy them and then give to us.

GRADING The following areas are what will make up your Physical Education grade: A. Participation -60% B. NYS PE Profile Assessments- 40% C. Fitness Testing – to be entered as a participation grade
NYS requires each student to have two (2) credits of physical education to graduate from high school. Students must obtain a 65% semester grade to receive credit for the class.

MISCELLANEOUS: Attendance and participation in class are key to success. NO CELL PHONES, IPods, headphones or any other electronic devices are allowed for any activity. These devices MUST be locked in your locker at the start of the class. If a device is seen, it will be collected and kept with the teacher the first time. If it happens again, the device will be collected and turned into the office.
