Sumi, 2-day Workshop with Yuming Zhu “Blue and Green Floral and Landscape on Gold Paper” 1303 N Monroe St. Spokane WA 99201 April 30, May 1st. (Sat & Sun) 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Cost $175.00

Have you seen the sumi-e black ink and mineral Blue and Green painted on gold paper? In this workshop you will learn floral, bird and landscape paintings on beautiful gold paper. This is a very traditional tech of creating Sumi-e art, but you will learn to corporate with modern interpretation. For participants who keep their sketch diary, we will encourage to create art based on their sketch books. We will encourage every artists to make Sumi-e style sketch on Paragon screen book or traditional rice paper sketch book. Both black ink and color will be used, and a variety of different brush strokes and forms practiced. Bring a bag lunch.

In day two, painting on Paragon rice paper, we will learn expressive sumi-e brush strokes to paint Roses, Sun-flowers and other vine plants will be introduced in the workshop. We will make a set of pot of flowers of local blooming, and participants will learn to create their work based on same setting for everyone. We will If participants have images of “cute” monkeys, please bring to workshop, and we will work on painting monkeys in Sumi-e style on Long Fiber Rice paper.

This workshop welcomes beginning and professional artists. We will work a lot on individual base. Painters new to sumi-e, and those experienced in East Asian watercolor painting will be introduced and encouraged to look the “World” in a different artistic perspective. There will be demos, exercises, and one-on- one attention. For continuing participants, you are encouraged to make one painting from sketches from your sketch book.

About the Artist Yuming Zhu is a very passionate and well-known artist in the Great Seattle area. Sumi/Chinese Watercolor, Oil and Pastel are the mediums Yuming loves to express himself with. He participated in the “Five Thoughts of Asian Art” program that was offered through the Seattle Art Museum and KCTS Channel 9. Yuming was recognizes as Master Sumi artist and top 50 Emerging artists in US by Art Business Magazine. He continues teaching sumi-e painting and calligraphy at community colleges, art centers at the Greater Seattle area and nation-wide. Also he shows his artworks at galleries.
