MUMMA SURNAME DNA PROJECT STATUS
I know that many of you are curious and interested about the status of the Mumma Surname DNA project, so I will deal with it first. In early July, DNA samples from 26 participants were sent to the University of Arizona (via Family Tree DNA, Inc.) for DNA extraction and analysis. The surnames of the participants included MUMMA, MUMMAU, MUMMAH, MUMA, MOOMAW, MOOMAU, MUMME AND MOMMA. The analysis is not complete, but the results are expected within a few weeks or so. I plan to post preliminary data to the web site shortly after the information is received. I will be posting the information at http://www.mumma.org/DNA.htm
DATABASE CHANGES
I uploaded a new database to the web site on August 8th and it now includes 44,734 individuals/descendants. Some of the additions and changes were: o A "first wife" has been identified and added for George Anthony Mumma. Her name was Alice Baughman. Birth, marriage, and death date information is unknown about her. In addition, George's eldest daughter, Elizabeth who married John Carle, has been assigned to this first marriage. The other children remain as the union of George and Barbara Weber. The evidence for this new wife is solid and can found in a article I wrote on this subject. You can view it by going to http://www.mumma.org/archives/IMA.pdf. This is a PDF file (Adobe Acrobat) that most of you should be able to read. If not, go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html and obtain a free copy. Most companies now create their manuals and catalogs in Adobe format. o Removed George Anthony Mumma's daughter, Barbara Mumma, b. 27 Sept 1768 who married Henry Stickler. Richard Huffman was the first researcher to link this Barbara as George Anthony Mumma's daughter. Recent discussions with Richard Huffman and Robert Moomaw revealed that there is no evidence to support the link of this particular Barbara to George. It appeared, time wise, to be a likely fit when the link was made. She and her descendants have now been reassigned as "unidentified tree" U36. o Attached a Barbara Mumma, b. abt. 1765 and died 1840 in Sharpsburg Maryland, as the daughter of George Anthony Mumma. This Barbara is buried in the Mumma graveyard where her brothers, Jacob and Henry, are buried. She married Joseph Sherrick, a long time family friend and neighbor in Sharpsburg. Additional information is listed under Barbara's "notes". While the evidence for the link of this Barbara as the daughter of George Anthony Mumma is not primary, it is much stronger than the linkage of the previous Barbara.
1 o Added many biographical notes and obituaries for various Moomaws of Botetourt County, Virginia who followed the Brethren religion. This data was extracted from various sources by Patricia Hickin. Also many other obituaries were added throughout the database from material supplied by various people. o Updated information on the MEWMAW family extensively that was supplied by Anna Lou Mack Martin. Also added additional descendant information for James Allen Mewmaw provided by Carol Ryan Acosta. o Received data from Pamela Mumma about the descendants of Charles A. Mumma of Fulton County and he was assigned "unidentified tree" U39. Since the database was uploaded, it has been determined, with the help of Mike Horton and Ron Rose, that Charles is really a descendant of Jacob Mumma, U24, born abt 1811. Likewise, Veryle Mumma, U25 is also a descendant of this Jacob Mumma. These trees will be merged for the next database upload. o Added the Estonian descendants of Mihkel Mumma, b. abt 1855 supplied by Tambet Mumma of Estonia. o Added the descendants of Elizabeth Mumaw, b. 1832, and Samuel East supplied by Lisa Snyder Tussing. o Plus many other smaller additions and corrections supplied by many people, too numerous to mention individually.
If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will attempt to correct the problem.
All of the people in the Internet database are contained within the various "Mumma Trees" as follows. If any of you can be of assistance linking the various trees together, your help would be appreciated.
