Weyerhaeuser Enhances Flak Jacket ® Protection on Trus Joist ® I Joists
Seattle, Wash. –Weyerhaeuser, the industry leader in engineered wood innovations, has upgraded the company's Trus Joist® I-Joists with Flak Jacket® protection to create a more versatile product for builders. The enhanced fire-resistant coating improves the product appearance, further simplifies installation, and continues to comply with the latest residential fire code provisions.
"The enhanced solution meets the fire performance requirements without a coating on the bottom flange, allowing the joists to be installed in either orientation," says Dan Kerska, regional manager of sales, engineered lumber products, with Weyerhaeuser. "That's a significant advancement because it helps builders speed up installation of the I-Joists while still meeting code requirements."
Additionally, Kerska reports that Weyerhaeuser has increased its mill capacity to meet demand in both current and future markets for the popular I-Joists with Flak Jacket protection. Applied in the factory, the Flak-Jacket coating provides a proven resistance to fire while meeting the challenges of shifting code requirements.
"Another improvement is our coating’s smoother, cleaner appearance," says Kerska. "Since this product is used in unfinished basements, the look of the product is important to builders. They know they can rely on TJI® joists with Flak Jacket protection for reliable and efficient framing."
As a cost effective framing solution for builders, TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection help single-family homes meet the 2012 IRC R501.3 and 2015 IRC R302.13 requirements for fire protection without the use of gypsum board or sprinklers. Extremely durable, the I-joists can easily be drilled and cut on the jobsite for mechanicals and ductwork.
First introduced in 2012, the TJI Joist with Flak Jacket protection was the first factory applied solution to meet the newly enacted residential fire code requirements. This latest innovation continues to improve upon this industry leading solution.
