STAFFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL 6th Grade Science Field Trip to Bluff Point

As part of our science ecosystem and water cycle units, our science students will be taking a trip to Bluff Point in Groton, CT. Before the trip, students will take part in a webinar and video conference with the CT Sea Grant College Program Outreach Coordinator. At Bluff Point, they will go on a guided exploration of the banks of the Poquonnock River and Long Island Sound where they will be able to seine for marine species. Students will learn about glacial geology, native and invasive plant and animal species, sea levels and climate change. This is a special experience, as Stafford Middle School is the only non- coastal community in Connecticut to have this connection with the Sea Grant Program.

The trip for science periods A, B and F will be on Friday, May 20th. Buses will be leaving SMS at 7:30am and returning at approximately 3:15pm. Students should be picked up promptly at 3:15. The late bus will not be available upon return.

Students must bring a bagged lunch with them…NO glass bottles, please! If you would like to order a bagged lunch from our school cafeteria, please indicate this on the attached permission form.

Students should…  bring a jacket because it is usually a bit cooler and windier on the coast.  wear shoes for walking on a dirt road and on the beach. (Water shoes are optional but strongly recommended. Students without water shoes will not be permitted to walk in the water.)  wear sunscreen and bug spray  bring drinking water

Electronics of ANY kind are NOT permitted on the field trip.

The experience at Bluff Point has been funded by the CT Sea Grant College Program. However, students will need to pay for transportation. The cost for the bus is $12.00. (Please make checks payable to SMS.)

Please complete the attached Student Behavior Agreement, permission slip and payment to your homeroom teacher no later than Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Retain this page for your reference. STUDENT BEHAVIOR AGREEMENT
