Status: Hourly / Non-Exempt Reports To: Group Leader Level: 1

Position Summary: Participate in and oversee automated drafting activities in such specialized areas as engineering, electrical, or architecture for the purpose of laying out and preparing structural, mechanical & engineering drawings for new or existing water, wastewater & industrial equipment, and systems.

This is the beginning/student level. The employee works in a learning capacity performing a range of detailing assignments while receiving close supervision.

Essential Job Functions  Draws structural, mechanical and engineering details of equipment, structures, and more using AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks &/or Creo (PRO-E).  Details geometrics, utilities and structures, and computes necessary dimensions.  Computes and verifies mathematical data.  Performs related work as assigned.  Utilizes engineering handbook, design manuals, other sources such as part catalogs to find additional data.  Work as a member of a design team within a Production Group.  Work in a productive manner.  Utilize knowledge of various drafting packages and software to complete drawings.  Interprets contract drawings & specifications in order to produce accurate drawings.  Determines materials necessary to meet planning criteria, coordinates the work, and changes as necessary. (e.g. fabrication shops)  Checks computed data and updates and corrects drawings and computations.  Visits sites to obtain additional data, measurements, and/or photographs.  Maintains sets of drawings, drawing changes, and daily reports for projects.  Prepares a variety of detail drawings that are clear & complete the first time.  Creates detail drawings from sketches or layouts.  Changes design to meet required specifications.  Investigates alterations to designs for improved performance.  Exercises independent judgment in selection of scale and proper views and decides upon necessary dimensions and proper placement on drawings.  Works from verbal instructions and sketches.

1 July, 2012  Makes accurate scale layouts of parts and assemblies for systems of considerable complexity showing specification tolerances, dimensions, and material to be used.  Prepares detailed designs, re-designs or modifications of parts, assemblies, electronic devices or other mechanisms.  Responsible for verifying accuracy of work performed by other designers.  Be aware of budget and schedule constraints on all work. Make every effort to complete assignment on time and on schedule.  Visually compare design of component, or other equipment with drawing of parts, matching coordinating points for accuracy of fit.  Other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications  Education: High School student or above.  Knowledge of the function and operation of AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks and/or Creo (PRO-E).  Knowledge of nomenclature and conventional symbols of structural, mechanical and engineering drawings.  Knowledge of practices followed in the preparation of engineering structural and mechanical plans.  Knowledge of design concepts, planning, techniques, including design manuals, standard plans and specifications, and engineering and drafting practices.  Knowledge of scale determination and conversion.  Knowledge of checking survey notes and computations.  Knowledge of trigonometry, geometry and general mathematics used in the work.  Ability to prepare layouts, and drawings neatly, accurately, and legibly.  Ability to make accurate drawings to scale from field notes, design drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions.  Ability to read and interpret plans required in the interpretation of drawings.  Ability to prepare scale and full-size detailed working drawings.  Ability to make mathematical calculations related to the work.  Ability to understand and carry out detailed, technical instructions.  Ability to maintain records and drawings relative to the work.  Ability to maintain effective working relationships with private, public, local, state, and federal personnel as well as other department personnel.  Ability to communicate effectively.  Ability to maintain favorable public relations.  Solid understanding of drafting techniques and familiarity with Engineering terminology.

Preferred Qualifications  Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
