Electrical Instructor Certification

ELECTRICAL INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION DIVISION OF MINE SAFETY

Minimum requirements for certification as an Electrical Instructor by the Division of Mine Safety (DMS) are as follows:

A. An applicant shall have completed five (5) years of mining experience, two (2) of which shall be related to electrical work in underground or surface coal mines.

B. Persons holding a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering or a two (2) year Electrical Technology Degree from an accredited institution shall be credited with one (1) year of work experience when applying for an Electrical Instructor Certificate. Persons desiring to use their Electrical Engineering Degree or Electrical Technology Degree as credit for experience toward and Electrical Instructor Certificate shall file with DMS a certified transcript of their grades and proof of having received their degree prior to the examination for certification.

C. All applicants shall possess a current electrical worker’s card issued by DMS prior to taking the examination.

D. A data sheet and affidavit shall be filed by each applicant for certification. The data sheet shall include a listing of places of employment, including beginning month and year of employment by each company, jobs performed, and title or position. Affidavit and data sheet forms shall be furnished by DMS. Please include a copy of your current Kentucky electrical worker’s card with your application.

E. The applicant shall present to the examiner at the time of registration for the initial examination and/or any re-testing, a U.S. Postal Money Order or a Certified Check in the amount of fifty (50) dollars made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer.

F. The applicant shall pass a written examination administered by DMS, consisting of the following subjects: a. Direct current Theory and Application b. Alternating Current Theory and Application c. Electrical Equipment and Circuits d. Permissibility of Electrical Equipment e. Requirements of State and /Federal Laws Relating to Electricity in Surface and Underground Mines. f. Pertinent Sections of the National Electrical Code. G. A passing grade of eighty (80) percent shall be required on each subject included in the certification examination. An individual may repeat those examination subjects on which he/she received an unsatisfactory score at the next scheduled examination date. If additional re-testing is necessary, a minimum of six (6) months from the date of receipt of notification of the grades earned on the first repeat of the examination shall elapse before the applicant may request to retake the full examination. After that date, each time the applicant fails to complete the examination, he/she must wait another six (6) months and retake the full examination.
