Biography for Dr. Gerald Gaul
Dr. Gerald Gaul was born in Davenport, Iowa and started studying viola at age 11, first with William Henningbaum, the violin professor at Augustana College in Moline Illinois, and subsequently with William Preucil at the University of Iowa. Re received a BA in viola performance at New College in Sarasota Florida, and then went on to study medicine at the Mayo Clinic.
In 1989 he moved to Grand Forks, ND, where he still practices as an eye surgeon. In 1990, he founded with Rob Radmer the Buffalo Commons Chamber Music Society. He was principal viola with the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra for twenty years, performing as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He has performed as a recitalist in New York City and San Paulo Brazil, and has played with the Sacramento Opera.
In the last year he has given recitals and chamber music performances with his wife, Cecilia Florencia Garcia Gaul, who is a violinist. He has actively supported the music department at the University of North Dakota, where he has taught in both the music department and in the medical school. In May of this year he became a trustee of the National Music Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota.
