Youghal previously met Erins Own in Magners Hill on a wet and windy August evening in the East Cork League semi-final to decide who progressed to either A County or B County Championship with the visitors winning by 1 goal on that evening. Erin’s Own went onto to lose narrowly to Inch in the A County Final and the Youghal girls lost narrowly to eventual County B champions Eire Óg in the semi-final. With both sides still awaiting silverware for the 2014 season an enthralling contest lay in store for the large gathering of parents, grandparents, family, friends and supporters under the glorious November sunshine. The previous Monday, Gael Scoil Choráin were narrowly defeated by Glounthaune NS(Erin’s Own) in the DF1 Sciath na Scoil Final in Pairc Úi Chaoimh, with many members of both teams playing on the day. Once the referee threw in the ball, both sets of supporters were treated to an outstanding exhibition of Ladies Football with both sides playing with passion and spirit of the game. The Youghal girls struck first with a well worked goal started from centre half-back, Cara, up through mid-fielder Eabha which was excellently finished by full-forward Niamh Flavin. Erins Own responded with a point to keep both sets of supporters on their feet. With the Youghal full-back line of Jenny, Rebecca and Mary fighting and winning the majority of ball, the platform was set for our next decisive score with once again Niamh polishing off a well worked goal to put us 5 points in front. With sustained pressure Erin’s Own responded with a point and were starting to get into the game. Two excellent point blank saves by Niamh Galvin kept our lead and we responded with a well taken point by Ciara. With Hannah tirelessly marking one of the Erin’s Own dangerous half-forwards the Youghal girls started to get on top of the game. With Sarah playing a selfless role in spoiling the sweeper system the Youghal girls kept up the pressure and created many scoring opportunities. On the next attack Erin’s converted a free to leave just 4 points between the sides. On the stroke of half time with a well worked move from Lesley to Kate and on to Ciara, where she once again scored a point to leave the half-time score 2-2 to 0-3 in favour of the home side. The atmosphere in Magners Hill was electric as the game resumed on the referee's whistle. As expected Erin’s Own drove into the game and cut the lead to 4 points after the first attack of the second half. With Sorcha and Chloe cleverly combining, the Youghal girls were rewarded with a free which Niamh converted to restore our 5 point lead. Scores were at a premium in the 2nd half with both sets of defences on top of their game. With Aoibhe replacing the hard working Hannah the Youghal girls kept up the hunger and took the game to Erin’s Own, Caoimhe narrowly missing a goal. The switch of the Erins Own's cente-back to midfield brought dividends with an excellent solo goal and made it a 2 point game. Knowing that the game was in their grasp the Youghal girls upped their effort and were rewarded with Kiah(replacing Sarah) setting up Niamh for a point to give us a 3 point lead. Erin’s Own quickly responded to cut the deficit to 2 points, a dangerous lead in any game. With tiring limbs Youghal brought on Emily and Sara to freshen things up. With time almost up and Erins Own pressing for that winning goal the Youghal defence ably assisted by centre-forward Sorcha defended heroically and forced each Erin’s Own attack wide. After 4 agonising minutes of injury time the referee finally blew his whistle which resulted in high emotion and jubilation from players, management, parents, family, Club members and friends not seen since the Youghal Intermediate Hurlers brought home the County last year. East Cork Ladies Football Chairman, Tomas Goggin presented the cup to captain Eabha Walsh, congratulating both teams in an excellent exhibition of football amid jubilant scenes and rapturous applause from all the Youghal supporters. Afterwards all players and parents celebrated in style in Club Aras, many thanks to all parents who provided food on the night. Finally to all girls, your effort and attendance at training all year paid off. Thank you for the memories from this year's championship, you deserve all you achieved and you did Youghal proud. Code of Best Practice: A big thank you to Aine Martin for organising a course for a number of coaches and club officials on Wednesday the 19thof November. The workshop covered awareness of child protection in sport and also a code of behaviour for those responsible for coaching. As many of the people involved may not have any formal training we felt the evening was an invaluable source of information on how best to deal with difficult situations if or when they arise. Youghal Camogie Lil Shindig: In the spirit of ONE CLUB we wish the best for an enjoyable evening for all those involved in Youghal Camogie. Personally I think the skill level for these young ladies already bodes well for the 2015 season. 23/11/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 25 Nov 2014, 11:43 by Doi Brame Well another season has come to a close and the Youghal club can look back with a certain degree of satisfaction on 2014. Our Senior hurlers had two marvellous victories in their first season back up in the Senior ranks in nearly two decades when they defeated eventual county finalists Na Piarsaigh and then took the scalp of Carrigtwohill before loosing out to a strong Douglas outfit in the quarter final. Our Intermediate footballers lost out also to Kilnamatrya after a pulsating game in Pairc Ui Rinn having got the better of Cloyne in the third round of the championship. Our Junior B hurlers had an amazing season, and were crowned East Cork champions after an incredible victory over Castleyons in the semi final, before putting in a storming last five minutes in the final to overcome a very strong Erin's Own outfit. The Junior B footballers also had a great season before loosing out to a late goal in the semi final against Castlelyons. Our U21 hurlers and footballers and minor hurlers and footballers however came up short in their respective championship competitions. VARIOUS AGM's. Ladies football AGM takes place this Friday night 28/11/14 at 8 pm in Club Arus, followed by the Eochaill Og AGM on Monday night 1/12/14 at 8 pm in Club Arus and the senior club AGM will be held on Sunday 7/12/14in Club Arus at 5 pm. All members and intending members are welcome to attend all AGM's. SYMPATHIES. The Club would like to extend its sincere sympathies to the family of our former player Kevin Lonergan who passed away recently. A full report on our AGM will be published in December by our newly appointed PRO, as unfortunately due to work commitments I won't be in a position to go forward for a third consecutive year as PRO, and I would like at this point to thank all the media for their help in publishing all the reports over the past few seasons. I would also like to thank sincerely my fellow officers, especially Secretary Alan Hennessy, for all their help while I was PRO. Finally I would like to pay a special tribute to Community Radio Youghal for their outstanding live coverage of all our Championship games in the last few years, not only the Youghal club but also the surrounding clubs. Thanking you sincerely... Under 8’s and 9’s - Padraig “Paw Paw” Coyne Memorial Cup Saturday 11th October

The family of former Youghal player Padraig “PawPaw” Coyne kindly commissioned a Cup in his memory. The Cup was played for in a hurling tournament involving U8 and U9’s, fierce competition and excitement with Pat Coyne presenting the cup to the winning captain.

Under 9’s Last Saturday the U9 team had training with a difference, we went to Perks 22 kids participated in Bowling, Laser and Zorb Football, special thanks to Siobhan Byrne and Dana Linehan Foley for treating the players so well. The Under 8 and under 9 teams played a mini football tournament in Youghal. Four teams played 3 matches and the top team got serious bragging rights for a couple of weeks. We played St. Colemans in Youghal for a Tuesday evening match. We had 18 players on show and the enthusiasm from players and parents was so exciting. We played a number of hurling and football blitzs in the Glen, Erins Owen, Glanmire and Carrigwohill. In Carrig we played 3 matches against St. Finbarrs, Fermoy and Kiltha Og. There continues to be great improvement in the commitment and skill of all the players. These skills will be tested soon under the guidance of the Eochaill Og and some of Youghal’s senior hurlers. We continue to train on Saturday mornings at 11am on the field and in the hall on Mondays at 6.30pm. All new players are very welcome

Patrick O’Mahony Memorial Hurling Trophy – Saturday 18 th Oct 2014 The Youghal U14 team were invited to the Patrick O'Mahony (Imokilly) Memorial Hurling tournament in Killeagh on Saturday the 18th of October. In the first game Youghal faced the mighty Glen. With a gale of wind at their backs Youghal got a taste of tournament hurling when the Glen took an early two point lead. Youghal rallied with goals from Jake O'Brien and the mighty Evan Kennedy. In the second half Youghal faced a gale of wind and Liam Ansbro Moylan dropped back as sweeper and dominated superbly to lead Youghal to a 5 point victory. Next up was a very strong Watergrasshill team , against the strong breeze Youghal caught the Hill with a well taken goal from Dion O’Donoghue. With Kyle Brown dominating at number 6 and Oran Finn working tirelessly at wing back. The additions of Tiarnan McCarthy, John Murphy and Dean Colman, Youghal steadied the show. Youghal saw out the game with a couple of well taken points and the game ended on a high note with Alan Carter and Kelvin Yellop stretching the Watergrasshill defence. With two wins Youghal qualified for the final against the determined home side of Killeagh. Youghal started with the gale but found scores hard to come by. A monster point from Jake Cooper followed by a goal from Evan Kennedy broke the deadlock. However, then followed twelve minutes of onslaught from Killeagh, who scored a goal right after the break to rattle Youghal. Scores against the wind were vital with points from Ruairi McMahon and Dion O’Donoghue. Killeagh with a two point deficit dug deep and went searching for victory. With Peter Kirk calling the shots in goal, unbelievable defending was on show from Jack McGrath and Jack Dorrian, Ian Fitzgerald Hehir, Ethan Cliffe and Cian O’Sullivan. The work rate in midfield was immense with Colm Breslan and Aidan Kelly covering every blade of grass. The experience of Liam Ansbro Moylan, Kyle Brown and Dylan Roche was vital. Youghal dug deep and secured victory through immense heart, courage and teamwork. The hard work throughout the year paid off as they brought the trophy back to Youghal. Many thanks to the hosts Killeagh especially Colman Motherway for an excellently organised tournament. Coaching Courses Eochaill Óg will be running Foundation & Level 1 coaching courses, and these will be conducted by Sean Crowley (Imokilly GDA). Any queries please feel free to contact Donal on 0879326024 or Tony on 0866026815 U14 East Cork Championship Final Youghal Vs Watergrasshill Youghal 1-4 Watergrasshill 1-6 A very determined U14 team went to Watergrasshill on the 2nd November to play in the East Cork Final. In front of a very big crowd of supporters, something not witnessed in ladies football at this level, really added to the occasion for the Youghal girls. Coming into this final Youghal competed in 7 games over 3 mth period and with every game came harder battles. A challenge game the week before against Inch Rovers in the “Sheila Shield” tournament (Held every two years between Youghal and Inch) really set the Youghal girls with very good preparation for the final. This Youghal Team really have a committed set of parents and support travelling the length and breadth of East Cork to all games and creating real positive memories in Ladies Football. The game itself was a dogfight from start to finish. Most of the Youghal Girls experiencing their first East Cork Final at this grade had a difficult start with the majority of ball with WGH attack. But the Youghal girls eventually broke out of their own defence and scored the first point of the game nearly 10 mins into it. This was the story for the entire game, nip and tuck no one getting any great leverage over the other. At half time we were a point down and made a switch at centre back for the second half. This settled us a bit more and the girls really took the game to WGH. A free awarded at 10 mins inside the 13 yard line saw Youghal lob the goal keeper for a goal and we went ahead by 2 points. We got great encouragement from this and drove on but WGH never gave up and continued to pedal back the deficit. An error by Youghal saw WGH capitalise with a goal and they took the lead by 1pt. Youghal girls never gave up at this stage of the game and battled very hard to bring it level but after many attempts at working the ball inside against a very strong back line WGH broke out to finish the game with a final point at the death and they landed the Cup. To put this game into context last April we had a panel of 9 girls after losing some at the start of the year and a decision was made to consult and work with U12 management to build a team for championship. Since that decision the Youghal Girls played games en route to the final something not even considered last April, in fact we didn’t think we would get passed first round. The Final was a great experience for all involved and we went all out for the day to remember it as a good memory regardless of the result. Huge thanks must go out to all the committed parents who have travelled all over following and believing in what we are doing in ladies football. The Executive of Youghal GAA for their commitment to these young girls. Also I would like to give a huge thank you to Pat Ryan of KIA Garage for his support providing a Coach for our big occasion. Here’s wishing you all well in 2015, Gordon, Marie & Finbarr 27/10/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 10 Nov 2014, 01:10 by Doi Brame

Junior "B" Hurling c/ship final. Eochaill 2-15 Erins Own 1-6. Having lost very heavily to a stronger Sars team in 2013,Youghal made a triumphant return in Saturday's final, defeating a very fancied Erins Own team. On a well prepared sod in Castlemartyr Erins own opened the scoring in the first minute with a goal,as the Youghal defence failed to clear their lines. From here to the half time whistle Youghal dominated proceedings with points from Darragh O'connell, Andrew Joyce and team capt; Jonathan Ormonde. The Youghal defence was outstanding after the first minute blip and the rest of the team followed suit, the mixture of youth and expierience now well on top. Youghal led at h/t 0-8/1-1 after playing with the wind. The second half saw the best of this Youghal team. Playing a fast slick brand of hurling that would do justice to a higher grade Youghal increased the lead with some majestic points from Matthew Farrell. Erins Own found a bit of rhytm and with 10 mins remaining were behind by 3.The youghal defence stood firm.A brilliant move up the field ended in a goal by Andrew Joyce and from here to the end it was one way traffic.Further points from Conor Hennessy,A.Joyce increased the lead before team capt;Jonty, sealed the win with another well taken goal.Final Score YOUGHAL 2-15 ERINS OWN 1-6. This was a brilliant team performance with all team members superb on the day.The defending by all our backs young and old was brilliant ,the midfield and forward line blend of youth and expierience was a joy to watch and the subs used played their part aswell,we'll forgive Eoin Coleman for missing a sitter! The new training format appears to be working for the foreseeable future, start time 10.30 am until 12 noon. Last weeks turn out of 20 young ladies was great. The girls again covered the basics with a little keep fit thrown in for good measure. A proposed development camp for U 6, 7 and 8's in early 2015 will be a great boost for these up and coming stars of our games. U14 Ladies Football. The U14 ladies had a fantastic win against St Colmans last week on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-2 and now look forward to taking on Rock Bán B in the championship semi-final. U12 Ladies Football. The U12 ladies have had an eventful few weeks with action against some of the top teams in Cork. First up was a narrow defeat against Erins Own on a wet and windy evening in Magners Hill where the girls just narrowly missed out in qualifying for the County A championship after going down by a late goal, Erins Own subsequently went on to quality for the A County Final. This defeat meant that we would play in the B County Championship (a first for any team from the Club to reach this grade). Our first game was against St Marys (Liscarroll / Dromina combination) where the girls put on an outstanding 2ndhalf performance to win by 8 pts. Next up was Éire Óg in the County semi-final where both teams put on an outstanding display of football. Éire Óg hit the front for the first time with 2 minutes to go and as the girls were chasing the equalising point we conceded an injury time goal on a breakaway attack which dashed our County dreams, a title subsequently won by Éire Óg. The management, club officers and parents are all in agreement that this group of ladies have given tremendous entertainment throughout the year and here’s hoping that well deserved success will not be far away. U12A East Cork Championship Semi-Final Eochaill 6-8 Na Piarsaig 2-7 Our U12 Gold team headed up to Fairhill on a sunny but cold Sunday morning to take on the the home team in this year's A championship semi-final. The first half was a very even affair unlike their earlier clash in July, with very little between the teams with both defences generally on top to leave the home side 2 points ahead 2-4 to 2-2 at the short whistle. To their credit the Youghal girls came out a team transformed and started to play some beautiful open football which resulted in great scores to put the game beyond Na Piarsaig's reach. In fairness the final scoreline doesn't due justice to a very determined performance from the local girls. It would be a bit unfair to single out any particular individuals as this was a great team effort so well done to all 15 girls on the day who gave it their all and are now looking forward to contesting the A Championship Final and the B League Final v Fermoy. Our Maroon team are busy preparing for their C Championship semi-final against Mayfield with Carrigtwohill awaiting the winners in the Final. U10 Ladies Football. The U10 ladies continued with their unbeaten run to qualify for the league semi-final where they overcame a determined Rock Bán side by 2 points to qualify for the A final against Aghada. Best of luck to all players and management. On the day the young girls showed that the effort put in at training really paid off with three wins from three games. A heart felt thank you to the organisers who extended a warm welcome with a well organised event. Thank you also to the parents/guardians in giving of their time, as a social occasion for adults and children alike good fun was had by all. Saturday 13th was the turn of Passage West, this year as last was a very well attended event with a total of 76 teams, teams from all over Cork, Kerry, Kildare with a strong showing from Northern Ireland. Thankfully this year the weather was exceptional which only added to the enjoyment. Again our under 8 ladies did us proud with three wins from three, with the last two games back to back they were under some pressure from a strong Eire Og team. A low scoring game with each score hard fought finally saw Youghal triumphant again. The parents and guardians were again in attendance and a very enjoyable social event was had by all. The U 10 ladies with two teams in attendance also acquitted themselves well winning the majority of their games. Congratulations to the organisers for an extremely well run event from the opening parade right through. To look forward to, Saturday 20thSeptember sees the inaugural U 8 blitz in Youghal, with a confirmed twelve teams to attend we are looking forward to welcoming some old friends and hopefully some new friends will be made on the day. All comers are welcome on the day with the event to commence at 10 am, your support would be very much appreciated on the day. 12/09/2014 - Club Notes posted 16 Sep 2014, 00:32 by Doi Brame

SHC 1/4 FINAL.

Douglas 2-20 Youghal 1-09.

After something like 17 championship games over the last 2 years Youghal Senior hurlers finally bowed out of this years championship at the expense of Douglas at the 1/4 final stage last Saturday evening in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Raging hot favourites Douglas, after beating reigning county champions Midleton in the last round, took control of this game with a goal just coming up to half time and after the resumption eased their way past the seasiders to secure their place in the semi finals. It is probably not the best memory we can have of our last game at this soon to be refurbished great venue, unlike the 1988 Intermediate final we played here, but i think everybody present recognised what this team has achieved over the last few years, and the massive injection the club has got by their recent elevation to Senior ranks again.

That first half was well contested by Youghal, and while Brendan Ring kept us ticking over on the scoreboard with 4 points, and some great saves by Ritchie Cunningham, Douglas hit the net after 10 minutes but this was cancelled out by a super goal by Brett Moloney a minute later, after great work by Cork minor Ollie Dempsey. However that late goal by Douglas left the half time score 2-10 to 1-04 and a big task faced the lads in the second half.

Unfortunately it was a bridge too far this time round and even though Youghal managed 5 more points in the second period through Brendan Ring 0-2, and one each from Bill Cooper, Damien Ring and Brett Moloney, Douglas found their rhythm and picked off 10 points, mainly through the accuracy of Cork senior Alan Cadogan, Mark O'Connor and the Moylan brothers James and Stephen.

So disappointment on Saturday evening, but i would just like to pay a special tribute to these wonderful, wonderful group of lads, players, and the backroom team from the people of Youghal town and parish and further beyond, who have given us memories to cherish for years to come, and unlike last year they can now take a well deserved rest and enjoy Xmas this year and i'm certain we have not seen the best from these lads yet. Well done on your achievements lads, and all i can say about the selection committee is that after the marvelous job they have done with this panel over the last two years, they should be offered the job for the coming year and let the lads decide themselves if they want to take it on again or take a break. My sincere thanks to Jim Dingle Daly for his help in the above report. JBH Championship.

An Unforgettable Victory

Youghal 2-14 Castleyons 1-16.

To get a team out for championship hurling at 10 o'clock on any Sunday morning for a 12 noon game is a tough task, but to get a team out the morning of an All Ireland final, and the morning after being beaten the night before in Senior championship makes it that bit harder, but fair play to Stephen Twomey and his selectors, they had the lads ready for this big challenge and boy did they respond with this massive one point victory. Castleyons at this stage must be wondering what they have to do to beat Youghal in a hurling championship game, for just like last seasons Premier Intermediate county final, they had this one seemingly wrapped up when they led 1-15 to 1-09 with 15 minutes remaining and looking comfortable.

The opening 30 minutes was very evenly contested. Team captain, Johnathan Ormonde, who had a massive input into this result at full forward, scoring 0-6, opened the scoring with a pointed free after 2 minutes and this was followed by a great goal from rising Youghal minor star Conor Hennessy to leave the score at 1-01 to 0-1 after 5 minutes. Castlelyons then took control and picked off a few points including a beauty from former Cork Senior star Timmy Mc Carthy. and a goal from a free 75 yards out by Michael Spillane Jnr, who had a wonderful game contributing 1-07 to the scoreboard over the hour to leave it 1-05 to 1-02 to Castleyons after 15 minutes. Youghal then added points from Ormonde, Cathal O'Laochdha, Matthew Farrell, who got 2, and a massive effort from a free 70 yards out from Andrew Joyce, his second of the game, to read Castleyons 1-09 Youghal 1-08 at the short whistle.

It was that man again Ormonde who tied up the scoreboard within 2 minutes of the restart, but then Castleyons hit 6 unanswered points to lead 1-15 to 1-09 at the midway mark, but up popped that young lad again Conor Hennessy to strike his second goal for Youghal and put them back in the game. The Youghal selectors then made a tactical substitution by bringing on the wily warrior Eoin Coleman for the last 10 minutes and did it pay huge dividends. After Ormonde again made it a two point game with a beauty, Coleman struck for two great points to level the game with 3 minutes left. Ormonde unbelievably put Youghal in front with another great point before Coleman struck a long distance free to put 2 between them on the 30 minute mark, his third point since being introduced. Castleyons had 2 great chances for a goal in injury time but a pointed effort was all they got and Youghal won by the bare minimum. What a great advertisement for Junior B Grade hurling in the division this game was, and a reminder to all that you get it every bit as good if not better at this grade than in some games in the higher grades, and it was a pity that Youghal did'nt have greater support in the large crowd that witnessed this one. They now meet Ballinacurra in the semi final. Two people i must single out for special mention here today are Maurice Cronin, and his wife Anne. These two people are a credit to the Youghal club. Whether it is Senior, Intermediate, Junior, U21 or minor, league or championship, football or hurling, they will always be there to help with water bottles, jerseys, first aid or anything they are asked, and are a wonderful asset to the club and i would like to thank you both sincerely for your undivided loyalty to the club.

Congratulations to Castlemartyr on winning another East Cork Junior A Hurling title. Was it the best ever ????

Opinions are divided on whether last Sunday's All Ireland Hurling final between Tipperary and Kilkenny was the best ever. My vote goes to the YES camp... Roll on the replay.

Tuesday 29th saw the under 8 ladies in action against Carrigtwohill, the young girls are really starting to gel as a team as they go on. This outing makes it three wins from three for this developing team. There was a good turn out from parents and friends and this was very much appreciated. Some new players made a good impression and the girls are showing huge potential, skills such as hand passing and being able to pick out team mates when under pressure are areas the girls have covered in practice and this was evident on the night. Team on the night: Ruby Kennedy, Aoife Long, Aoibhe Daly, Caitriona O Riordan, Ufuoma Ajakari, Katie Ansbro, Sorcha Kilgannon, Rachel Philips, Aisling Flavin, Rebecca White, Aisling O Sullivan. We would like to wish Rebecca White and her family best wishes on their move to the USA. Combined U8 ladies Football & Camogie training continues every Saturday from 10.30m to 12. U12 U12GFL Youghal Gold 2-9 Midletom 0-2 Our Gold team continued with their unbeaten league run by over-coming a spirited Midleton team in Magners Hill on July 23rd. In a tightly contested first half both teams were evenly matched with both defences and midfields on top resulting in a low scoring half. On the Youghal side credit must go to Niamh G in goals and her full back line in keeping the threatening Midleton attack under control. The decisive score coming from Niamh F to give the Youghal girls a 1-2 to 0-1 lead at the short whistle. The second half commenced at the same tempo with both teams matching each other in all lines but as the half progressed the Youghal half-back line and midfield gradually got on top to set up some lovely scoring opportunities for the forwards which were duely converted. Overall the final result does not do justice to a very gallant Midleton team who matched the Youghal girls in most positions throughout the 50 minutes. Team: Niamh Galvin, Jenny Doyle, Abby Goggin, Cara McCaughney (Capt), Cassie Irwin, Rebecca Geary, Lesley Cashman, Kate Galvin, Eabha Walsh, Ciara Kiely, Sorcha Connolly, Chloe O'Connell, Sarah O'Sullivan, Niamh Flavin, Caoimhe O'Mahoney, Emily Gallogley, Mary Flavin. U12GFL Youghal Gold 5-9 Na Piarsaig 1-5 Our Gold team took on an unbeaten Na Piarsaig team on Sat 26th July in a windy Magners Hill. The Youghal girls quickly realised they were in a serious game after Na Piarsaig scored an early goal in their first attack, but the response was quick with a well worked goal finished by Caoimhe. With the strong wind behind behind their backs the Youghal mid-field of Kate and Eabha took control of the game with scores and setting up of opportunities for their forward unit to leave the half time score of 2-6 to 1-0. On resumption with the wind at the backs the Na Piarsaig girls took the game to Youghal with 2 quick points to reduce the defecit. At this stage of the game the half back line of Cassie, Rebecca and Lesley stormed into the match setting up scores for Sarah, Sorcha, Niamh, Chloe and Caoimhe to run out deserving winners on the day. The Na Piarsaig girls made a day of it by "Youghal by the Sea" afterwards by heading to the beach, a tour of the lifeboat (many thanks to Patsy O'Mahoney) and a sit down meal in Doyles Restaurant. Next up for ths team are our 2 outstanding games against Lisgoold and st. Nicks. Youghal bowed out of this years competition after a dissapointing result in Pairc Ui Rinn. They got off to the worst possible start when they conceded 1-2 inside the opening 2 minutes and then lost the services of long standing servant to Youghal football Paul O 'Driscoll, when he had to retire with a groin injury with less than 5 minutes, and this certainly had a profound affect on this game, as there was very little between both teams for the full hour, but the Youghal lads will know they could have won this one had they taken any one of four great goal chances that came their way in the first half, the highlight of which was an unbelievable point from a sideline kick at the corner flag by Leigh Desmond. It was dissapointing for Tony(Baa) Barrett and selectors who put a lot into this squad recently, but it was the overall play of the experienced former Cork great footballer Noel O'Leary, coupled with the impressive pair of Cork Minors, Dineen and Desmond that was the difference between the sides in the end. SHL Blackrock 2-16 Youghal 2-16. Our Senior hurlers had a very good result in the league last Friday night at Church Road when they came from 6 points down entering the final few minutes to salvage a draw and keep the momentum going for their upcoming championship 4th round v Carrigtwohill in Killeagh on Friday 22nd August. County Board Draw. Congratulations to all the winners in the county board draw that took place in Club Arus last Thursday night and all the winners in our local draw which was also held the same night for everyone joined in the County Board draw. 21/07/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 21 Jul 2014, 00:13 by Doi Brame Senior Hurling Championship 2nd Round. Youghal 2-14 Na Piarsaigh 1-15. If Frank Keane, author of "Up The Youghal Boys" a best seller which was published way back in 1991, ever decides to write another book on the history of Youghal Gaa from that year up to the present time, then events that unfolded last Saturday night in Carrigtwohill will surely be one of his highlights. If memory serves me right it is 30 years since the seaside town last won a Senior Championship hurling game and the celebrations were unbelievable at the full time whistle. Yes the club had a wonderful season last year, and to be back up senior was a dream come true but to beat a star strewn Piarsaigh side, and in the process secure senior status again for 2015 was nothing less than this battle hardened panel of players deserve. Maybe not a classic game of hurling, but the intensity over the full 60 minutes was immense. The loss to Newtownshandrum in the first round was something in the distant past, and this was a whole new ball game, confidence looked high among the players in the warm up and the huge following that this squad has behind them nowadays, were very vocal as soon as the ball was thrown in. Na Piarsaigh were on the score board in the first minute when influential corner forward Paudraigh Gould scored his first point and who contributed a total of 1-4 over the hour, before Brendan Ring had 2 points, one from a free, while in between Alan Keneally, nephew of former Cork great Tony O'Sullivan had another to level matters 0-2 a piece. Then Na Piarsaigh upped the tempo of the game and 4 unanswered points saw them lead 0-6 to 0-2 by the 10th minute. Bill Cooper stemmed the tide for Youghal with a beauty before Keith Buckley restored Na Piarsaigh's 4 point lead. Then came a brilliant passage of play from the Youghal lads that ended with Brendan Ring rattling the net with a superb goal in the 15th minute, followed within seconds by a point from the excellent Brett Moloney to leave the score midway through the first half 1-04 to 0-7. Brendan Ring and Stephen O'Sullivan exchanged points before Bill Cooper, who showed huge leadership qualities right throughout this game, was unceremoniously brought down in the square as he was about to unleash a shot for goal, by John Gardiner who was already on a yellow card and was lucky to escape without a second one for this infringement. As in the game against Newtownshandrum, up stepped Leigh Desmond to take the resultant penalty and bury the ball in the back of the net. Cian O'Mahony added a point for Na Piarsaigh to leave the score 2-5 to 0-9 before a huge turning point in this game. Na Piarsaigh looked to be in for a goal when Barry Ring, who had my nomination for man of the match brought off a miracle save and from the clearence Brett Moloney pointed at the other end for what in effect was a 4 point turnaround. Na Piarsaigh added 2 more points before the half time whistle to leave the game delecately balanced Youghal 2- 06 Na Piarsaigh 0-11. In those first thirty minutes, and indeed even more so in the second half, the 6 Youghal backs performed majestically under intense pressure, and with Kenneth Walsh working like the proverbial "old dog for the hard road" one had the feeling that this was going to be a very special night for the seasiders. Na Piarsaigh started the second half without the services of John Gardiner and it was left to Sean Og O' Halpin and current Cork senior Christopher Joyce who lined out at midfield to try and ressurect Na Piarsaigh's fortunes. The first few scores of the second half were going to be crucial and Youghal's latest Munster Senior Medal winner with Cork, Bill Cooper opened the scoring after five minutes with as good a score as will ever be seen in a hurling field, when he took the ball on the run out along side the sideline and off his left, pointed a beauty, to be followed by two more points from Brendan Ring to give Youghal a little breathing space, 2-09 to 0-11 before Piarsaigh got one back only for another one from a free by Brendan Ring and another from Alan Frahill O'Connor, playing his first full game since his leg surgery, left the score 2-11 to 0-13 with 15 minutes remaining, and Youghal looking good. From there to the finish Brendan Ring converted a free and a 65 to bring his tally for the hour to a whopping 1-8, and just as he did to win the County final last year with an injury time winner against Castleyons, super sub Ciaran O'Mahoney hit over a beauty to finish the scoring for Youghal and in the 26th minute Ritchie Cunningham, the Cork Intermediate goalkeeper who play Galway shortly in the All Ireland semi final, brought off a very courageous save, to deny the opposition a certain goal. Na Piarsaigh fought to the bitter end and had narrowed the gap to 5 points before Paudraigh Gould struck for a goal from a free deep into injury time to give the Youghal lads a nervy last few seconds. But it was Youghal's night, and nobody could deprive them of this latest marvellous victory. Congratulations to all involved and who knows, we might have to listen to O'Laochdha's version of " Sweet Yawl Bay" again, in Cricklewood sooner than we thought. The draw for the 4th round was made after the game in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, and Youghal were paired with my own home village of Carrigtwohill (lovely) with the winners to play either Midleton or Douglas in the 1/4 final. JBHC Championship. Youghal 1-17 Killeagh1-10. The week started brightly on the hurling front when Youghal's second team defeated near neighbours Killeagh in the championship. Trailing at half time by 1-5 to 0-5, the lads found plenty In the second half, and a goal by Ronan Sullivan ensured victory and a place in the next round. The victory was achieved by big performances from Brendan Coleman and Barry Goggin in the half back line, Aron Kenny at midfield, Conor Sullivan at centre forward and a brilliant display from Darragh O'Connell at corner forward. So well done to the management team of Stevie Twomey, John Ward and Miko Brien for keeping the lads on the senior panel on their toes with this bunch of very determined players breathing down their necks looking for their place in the first team. The committee, under the Chairmanship of former All-Ireland Senior Hurling winning manager Liam Sheedy (Tipperary) has begun the process of consulting widely within the Association at all levels and with GAA supporters to ascertain the areas which require the most immediate attention. With this in mind, Hurling 2020 have launched a survey which will allow all participants to be entered in to a draw for 2 tickets to the 2014 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final. This survey is a key part of the consultation process and its aim is to collate the feedback from the hurling community about the game as it stands and what you would like to see in its future. Your submission to this survey will form the basis of the committee’s report in the autumn of 2014 with a view to tabling motions as required to the 2015 GAA Annual Congress. U11 Hurlers Clinch Division 1 League Title with win away to Lismore U11WHL away to Lismore on Friday 6th June at 7pm. Our U11 panel travelled to Lismore for our final hurling match in the Waterford Town & Country Division 1 League, where only a victory would guarantee us winning the league. Once we arrived at Lismore, we knew that the bad weather and the conditions of the pitch were not condusive to us playing the standard of hurling we had played in previous matches. But in fairness to all the 21 players that played on the night, they got on with the job in hand and did not let it dampen their spirits. Management made a few changes to the starting team and also a few positional changes to keep everyone on their toes. You could see Youghal were up for the match from the very start, and began to take control in all areas of the pitch. It was a very enjoyable first half where each Youghal player contributed in giving us a half time lead of 4-4 to 2-2. Management decided to start with a whole new team in the second half and credit to the lads, they continued in the same vein as the first half. But in fairness to Lismore, they started to edge their way into the game and started to take some lovely scores of their own. It seemed at one stage that every time Lismore attached, they scored. Not even a great goal by Eoin McGrath mid way through seemed to stop Lismore cutting into the Youghal lead. With only 3 minutes to go, the game was in the melting pot and management were getting very nervous indeed. But points from Devon O Donoghue, Nathan Daly and Cúlann Geary saw the Youghal boys home, and Youghal ran out winners by the score line of 5-7 to 5-4. The final whistle was greeted with jubilant scenes from players, management and supporters, as it meant these lads had won the 2014 hurling league. A big thank you must go to the big support that travelled from Youghal on a bad night, in fairness the support all year has been fantastic. It was great for us all to see the huge effort and skill shown by all 21 players on the night, especially in the first half where Declan Daly proved very solid in goals. A mention too to Sean O Riordan, our most improved player of the season so far, as he battled for every ball and kept the ball moving into the forwards. A quick mention too to Cúlann Geary where he contributed all our scores (4-4) in the first half. Another great night for this panel of players and I am sure many more to follow. 30/06/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 30 Jun 2014, 14:14 by Doi Brame INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP. Youghal 3-10 Cloyne 0-10. Players and mentors celebrated at the full time whistle in Killeagh on Saturday night as if the county had just been won, and rightly so, as there was huge pressure on everyone to perform in this third round game as the consequences of losing could have been catastrophic. A loss here and they were out of the championship and then had the daunting task of facing Glanworth, knowing that defeat in that game would see them relegated to Junior ranks, from where the Sean Hayes coached team had been elevated from way back in 1999 after a lapse of many many years and to where nobody wanted to return to. Where I noted last week that our senior hurlers will have to work on pace and cuteness before they entertain Na Piarsaigh in the next round, it was both those traits that worked the oracle against Cloyne, especially cuteness, as a quickly taken free midway through the first half, saw the ever alert Lee Desmond, who had a massive input in the outcome of this game scoring 1-05 all from play, show huge composure and coolness as could be slotted the ball along the ground and into the net to give Youghal a 1-04 to 0-2 lead at a vital time in the game when Diarmuid O' Sullivan was again keeping Cloyne ticking over on the scoreboard with some great scores from placed balls and ended the game with 0-8 on the scoreboard from 0-10. At half time Youghal led by 1-05 to 0-04, and they had tremendous performances from every one of the starting 15 from (the out of retirement) goalkeeper Pat Mackey right up to corner forward Paul Moylan, who again showed right throughout the game that " class is permanent" scoring 1-04. From the restart Cloyne closed the gap to 2 points with two well stuck points from The Rock himself, but the Youghal backline dug deep and their pace out of defence, from Brendan Sullivan, Paul O Driscoll, Arron Kenny, Barry Goggin, Micheal Cronin, and another gigantic display from superb minor Matthew Farrell, saw Cloyne finding it hard to break through, even though Cloyne can have genuine grievances when similar to our first quickly taken free to score the goal, they were called back by the referee when it looked as if they were about to get a similar score. Conor Sullivan was strong at midfield and do I have to say anything more that I have not said already this year about Nigel Roche, a gladiator in his own right. The selectors introduced Barry Ring, Ross Desmond Rory Walsh and Adrian Curtin and we got massive contributions from these four players including a superb goal at the death to finish off the game from Curtin and prior to that, a wonderful piece of play from Micheal O' Laochdha saw him jink around a few players, pass to Moylan who finished superbly to the net. The evergreen Brendan Coleman's contribution to this victory was immense as was Paul Kelly's not stop runs up field and it was great to see the return of one of Youghal's great sportsmen Ken Dempsey to the team. They now go into the hat for the 4th round draw while Cloyne play Glanworth in the relegation play off, a game I would think Cloyne could and I hope will win. So overall a defining moment in the clubs football fortunes and I take my hat off to the management team of Tony (BA) Barrett. Everyone in the Youghal Gaa and Camogie club would like to wish one of the best players the club has produced in camogie and ladies football Shannon Bulman Joyce a very speedy recovery from a serious illness and we all hope to see the her back brim-ful of energy again shortly, and wearing the Cork and Youghal jersey again as she has done proudly on numerous occasions in the past.

Magners Hill Big Games. A huge weekend took place in our club grounds last weekend when we hosted the East Cork Oil sponsored East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship game on Saturday evening between St Ita's and Killeagh, where St Ita's came out on top, with a 0-19 to 1-12 victory, and then on Sunday we held our very first Cork Senior Hurling Championship game between Killeagh and reigning County Champions Midleton, where Midleton won on a scoreline of 3-18 to 1-13, played in front of a huge crowd in glorious sunshine, and our sincere thanks to the East Cork and Cork County boards for allowing us to host these two games. Our sincere thanks also to everybody who helped in any way in the preparation and organisation of the grounds and premises that ensured the smooth running of both games. A special word of praise to our Club Manager Ken Bulman and his staff who had the complex looking magnificent for the weekend. 23/06/2014 - Youghal GAA News posted 23 Jun 2014, 14:56 by Doi Brame SHC Youghal 1-13 Newtownshandrum 1-18. Not a great week for hurling clubs in the eastern part of the county with Youghal, Killeagh, Fr O'Neils, and Midleton all failing to progress in their respective championship games. Youghal making a return to senior ranks after their great season last year were always chasing their game against Newtownshandrum played in Fermoy last Sunday in very hot conditions. Teams level after 8 minutes 2 points apiece before Newtown hit 6 points to a single pointed free from Brendan Ring by the 22nd minute, Ring and Bill Cooper scoring Youghal's opening scores to leave the score 0-08 to 0-03. Then Brendan and Damien Ring added 2 points (a free and a 65) before Jamie Coughlan eased Newtown into a 6 point half time lead 0-11 to 0-05 with 3 delightful scores. It was significant in the first half that John Paul King, wearing no 11, but playing a very deep defensive role, was having a profound influence on the game and Youghal really had no answer to his continuous long deliveries. Youghal came out for the second half In determined fashion and after Damien Ring pointed in the first minute Leigh Desmond rattled the net from a penalty after only 3 minutes to put it up to Newtown and make it a 2 point game. Cathal Naughton then added 2 points for Newtown before Nigel Roche, who had another wonderful game for Youghal, added a point to leave it 1-07 to 0-13 after only 7 minutes play. Jamie Coughlan showed all his Inter County experience to add a point only to be cancelled out by Ollie Dempsey immediately. John Paul King made it a 4 point game, before Damien and Brendan Ring added a point each to narrow the gap to 2 points, 1-10 to 0-15 with 15 minutes left, before Ritchie Cunningham showed why he is the Cork custodian on Wednesday night in the Munster Intermediate Final when he saved brilliantly from Cathal Naughton who was coming at him at speed to deny what would have been a wonder goal. In that last quarter both sides added 3 points, but more significantly Newtown substitute got a goal that killed off the Youghal challenge and each team were also reduced to 14 men in two separate incidents in the last 3 minutes. So all in all, a disappointing first outing in senior ranks, and while only 5 points separated the teams at the final whistle, selectors and players will know that a huge improvement in pace and cuteness will have to come if we are to match the experience of Na Piarsaigh in round 2 next month. TEAM; R Cunningham, B O'Sullivan, J Grace, Barry Ring, M Cronin, C Spillane, K Walsh, N Roche, O Dempsey, B Cooper, C O'Mahoney, D Ring, Brendan Ring, B Moloney, L Desmond. MHL YOUGHAL 2-14 AGHADA 1-10 After the big game on Sunday in Fermoy, the minors returned to Copperalley to play Aghada in the league and after a tremendous game Youghal came out on top after impressive displays from the Coady brothers Ryan and Leon, Darragh O'Connell and two goal hero Conor Hennessy.

FIXTURES. IF CHAMPIONSHIP. Our Footballers have one last chance to stay in the championship when they take on near neighbours Cloyne in what should prove to be one hell of a tight game in Killeagh next Saturday night at 7.30. They lost out narrowly to both Adrigole, (1 point) and Glanmire (2 points) while Cloyne were level at full time with Kildorrery last week, only to lose out in extra time, so with so much at stake it would be a brave man would call this one.

East Cork Oil JAHC St Itas v Killeagh in Copperalley Sat 7.30.

Munster Championships This Week. Best of luck to both Ritchie Cunningham and John Grace who are on the Cork Intermediate panel, who play Tipperary in the Munster Final this Wednesday night in Pairc Ui Chaoimh at 7.30 and also to Ollie Dempsey who is on the Cork Minor panel who play Limerick in the Munster semi-final in the Gaelic Grounds this Thursday night at 7.30.

Aidan Foley, Eoghaill Og club Coach, gave a demonstration to the parents on how to hold the hurley, swing and hit the sliotair. This was followed by a quick warm up and then drills to practice the learned skills. Matches were played, parents versus kids and even though the parents fought hard, the kids came out on top with some lovely scores from both sides. The day ended up with a huge tug of war, parents versus the kids and trainers and to the wonderment of the parents, who were genuinely trying their best, the kids won every time. Refreshments were served in the bar afterwards where delicious fruit cake was flying around and devoured by the coaches. All in all it was a terrific day and really enjoyable from both the parents and kids point of view. EOCHAILL ÓG-HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – FINALS NIGHT GAMES Friday 30th May was Finals Night of the Eochaill Óg 2014 Hurling Parish Leagues. A wonderful occasion adorned with bright sunshine and freshly cut grass, a huge crowd and lovely hurling gave us something to remember for along time. The three finals were played off and produced three winning teams on the night but in truth everyone was a winner on the night. The Robbie O’ Sullivan Shield Final was played between Cuchulainn and Na Fianna with Cuchulainn winning on a scoreline of 3-01 to 1-02. The Tom “Midge” Pomphrett Final was played between The Gaels and The Crokes where The Crokes emerged victorious on a scoreline of 0-05 to 2-02. The George Bulman Cup Final saw Setanta defeat The Davitts 1-03 to 0-01. Team photos were taken prior to the games and all 6 teams and managers were led out onto the field by the Youghal Pipe Band. Amhrann Na bhFiann was observed by all and Mick Sheehan provided outside commentary of the days proceedings and interviews between each game. Official match programmes were for sale and a scoreboard in operation giving the occasion an “All Ireland Final” feel to it, which indeed it was to all who played in it. Each game was refereed by a Youghal Senior Hurler, Barry Ring, John Grace and Nigel Roche respectively. The parents, grand parents and family members of the players who attended in large numbers from Match Day 1 back in April 28th turned out in force again to create a marvellous, friendly, happy atmosphere. All three trophies were presented by Dan O’Sullivan, Kathleen Bulman and Angela Pomphrett to the winning teams amid scenes of total happiness and pure joy. Medals were also presented to all players including the managers ensuring every player was a winner on the day, which they were! Afterwards players went to the clubhouse where they had a post match meal and savoured the day with their teammates. Parents and friends also had tea and sandwiches in the club bar to complete a lovely day. The whole event was a massive success. We at Eochaill Óg knew it could work but to be honest we were taken aback by how much everyone“got behind it”, the amount of sandwiches and cakes made by parents for the night itself and support and thanks from all afterwards was very humbling and the smiles on the players’ faces said it all. We had 11’s 10’s and 9 year olds all mixed together playing with and against each other and by the end of the whole event they were playing as one big group. New friends made!! Thank you to all. With temperatures in the mid 20s this was an excellent game by both sides who played some lovely attacking football in extremely hot conditions. Special mention must go to the referee Ciara from Bride Rovers who sensibly allowed plenty of water breaks throughout the game. WGH struck first with a well taken point by their centre-forward only for the Youghal attack to cancel it out with a well taken goal. It was nip and tuck up to half time with goals from the Youghal girls proving decisive to leave the half-time score 3-2 to 1-3 to the visitors. The 2nd half was played in a similar pattern with the Youghal attack on top of their game scoring a further 3-2 to leave the final score 6-4 to 3-3. This was a great team performance and ice creams on their way home were just rewards for a terrific performance. We have 12 teams in total, broken them into 3 groups of 4. Youghal had 2 teams entered together with teams from Midleton, Fermoy, Carrigtwohill, Kiltha Og, St. Colmans and Cobh. The Youghal boys were really challenged in these games. Conditioned games of ground hurling and some pick and striking applied. Skill levels were high and the tackling was getting more determined as the competition continued. Some future stars were on display from all the clubs and it was very evident as to what players are doing that big extra training, outside of official training times. The Youghal team was made up of players picked from the panel of Aaron O'Donnell Murphy, Adam Coyne Aherne, Bobby Nicholson, Charlie O'Brien, Christopher Buckley, Ciaran Reilly, Conor Galvin, Coady Hickey, Daniel Reilly, David O'Connor, Declan Sugrue, Donnacha Ruxton, Dylan Byrne, James Murray, Jason Innes, Niall Baylor, Oisin Casey, Orin Brooks, PJ McCarthy, Ryan Twohig, Sean Cronin, Sean Hennessy (great to see Sean back) and Sean Murphy. Training is back on for Tuesday evenings at 7pm and 11am on Saturday mornings. All new players are welcome to come up and join in. We will have another blitz in 2 weeks-time. As some of our former top players will tell you “hitting the ball against a wall at home, is the best training you can get”. U11s Trip to Tipp On Sunday 25th May Youghal U11 hurlers took a trip to Tipp to support the Cork hurlers and their hero Bill Cooper. On route to Thurles the boys played a challenge match against St. Mary’s of Clonmel which turned out to be as exciting as any Cork v Tipperary matches even seen. The Youghal boys proved too strong for the Tipperary hulers on the day an left clonmel happy with their performance and their goodie-bags provided by St Marys. Then it was off to Thurles for the clash of Cork v Waterford in the Senior Hurling Championship. The atmosphere in the square in Thurles was great and it was an experience for the Youghal lads to witness such a hype. We spotted a few well know club members on our trek to Semple Stadium and the crack was mighty. We took our seats in time to see the Intermediate game and support the Club Hurler of the Year….. Richie Cunnigham. It was fabulous to see the enthusiasm these young players had to support their very own club player in a Cork jersey. Well done to Richie and John Grace and the Cork Intermediate team on a great win. Then it was time for the Senior team to take to the field. The roars that went up from all the children around us was amazing. The Cork team didn’t have the best start and the Youghal boys were quiet enough for the first half. As the team emerged for the second half a voice came screaming“Bill is on… Bill is on”. The excitement was almost too much to bear. They watched every move he made with egger eyes. Then the goal came and the Cork supports were on their feet but the young boys from Youghal were on air as it was non-other than their local hero Bill Cooper who scored the much need goal for Cork. Score after score the Cork team came back into the game and narrowed the gap to just one point. Yet again it was the warrior Cooper who scored the equalising point and drove his younger club mates into a state of hysteria…..It was a moment I will never forget and more importantly I think it was a moment that these young wannabes (want to be Bill Cooper) will never forget. As the final whistle blew the kids stood and clapped and cheered the Cork team for their display and none of them wanted to leave the stadium. As we made our way back to the bus and home to Cork, the analysing of the match would be one that the panel of the Sunday Game would be proud of. Not only have we some great hurlers on our U11 panel we may also have a future Micheal O Muircheartaigh. 03/06/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 3 Jun 2014, 03:20 by Doi Brame Senior Hurling League. After their great win over Bishopstown the Senior hurlers suffered a setback when they were decisively beaten 1-18 to 0-13 by Glen Rovers at a sun drenched Copperalley on Bank Holiday Sunday evening. Because of the replay between Cork and Waterford in Thurles next Sunday our championship opener against Newtownshandrum has had to be postponed. We would like to wish Bill Cooper all the best in that game as he had a wonderful introduction to Munster Senior Hurling Championship hurling when he made his appearance at half time in the drawn game scoring 1-01 and contributing immensely in the second half and here's hoping a nasty finger injury he picked up at training will have healed up in time. We also congratulate Ritchie Cunningham who played in goal for the Cork Intermediate team who were successful in their opening game also against Waterford and to John Grace who is also on the panel.

Intermediate Football. Our Intermediate Footballers are in Championship action this weekend when they take on Glanmire in the second round in Ballinacurra on Saturday night at 7 o clock. They lost out to Adrigole by a single point after a terrific game in the first round and they will be hoping to go one better against former Cork Senior, Michael Cussen and his team mates. They had a great workout recently when they lost out narrowly to Clashmore/Kinsalebeg 2-12 to 1-13 and this game will hopefully have got them spot on for Saturday night so best of luck to Tony Barrett and his charges. Our Junior footballers lost out to Russell Rovers 0-11 to 2-01 in the league. Parish Leagues. Our Parish leagues reached their conclusion last Friday night in front of a big crowd at Magniers Hill and what an unbelievable success this competition has proved to be. Many congratulations to Alan Geary and Andrew Murphy for reorganising this competition after a lapse of many many years and to anybody and everybody who helped in any way to make this an incredible success story. To the O'Sullivan, Pomphrett and Bulman families for donating the various trophies for the 3 finals, to the families of all the players competing, for making sure that this competition was an unqualified success, to all the young lads for taking part every Monday evening for the last 5 weeks and to all the people who sponsored the event, we thank you most sincerely. A special word of thanks also to Christy and Noel McCarthy of the Youghal Pipe Band for leading the teams out onto the field before the finals, something that will live long in the memories of all the young lads and also thanks to our three referees on the night. Barry Ring, John Grace and Nigel Roche. Sciath Na Scoil Finals. Played in Pairc Ui Rinn last week we congratulate Bunscoil Mhuire Eochaill on winning their final after an unbelievable victory over Blarney after extra time winning on a scoreline of 2-05 to 1-07. The quality of the hurling in this game was quite extraordinary. It was a massive team performance by the full panel of players and an incredible contribution of 1-04 by Jake O'Brien and another huge game at corner back by Ian Hehir ensured victory and great credit to their coaches Billy O'Connell and John Bulman. Commiserations to Clonpriest hurling and camogie teams who had to give best to their near neighbours Killeagh in both their finals, but to have reached their respective finals was a huge success in itself. With both teams unbeaten in the league so far the Youghal girls knew that they would be in for a tough hour. Fermoy playing with the breeze struck first with a well worked goal after 5 minutes quickly followed up by a point. Credit to the Youghal girls however who started to get to grip at the back lead by Lesley who had an outstanding hour at half back and Niamh, Abby, Jenny, Cara, Rebecca and Cassie settling well into the game by winning a fair share of poccession and putting the Fermoy attack under constant pressure. With captain Ciara starting to run at the Fermoy defence scoring opportunities started to present themselves for the Youghal girls and after sustained attacks we finally got back in the game with a goal by Chloe after Sorcha splitting the defence with a pin point pass. Fermoy added 3 more points to lead by 1-4 to 1-0 after 15 minutes. With Eabha and Kate working their socks off at mid-field the Youghal girls got back into the game with a point from Sorcha and a goal from Ciara after good inter passing between Niamh, Sarah and Caoimhe. With half time fasting approaching Fermoy struck a killer blow by goaling just before half time. After 3 changes with the introduction of Molly, Hannah and Kaiah the Youghal girls quickly settled into the game and a superb angled point from Kaiah brought us within 2pts of Fermoy. This was quickly followed by another Fermoy point to extend their lead to 3pts. After sustained Youghal pressure we levelled the game through a goal by Caoimhe with 15 minutes remaining. As both teams tired scoring chances became a premium and the Fermoy girls extended their lead with 2 quick points. Fresh legs were introduced by the Youghal management with the introduction of Aoibhe, Emily and Mary and continued pressure and missed chances brought the game to a nail biting finish. With time almost up Youghal won a 45 which Kate finished to the net to put Youghal 1 point up. But credit Fermoy who never gave up looking for that equaliser and pushed the Youghal girls to their limits. At the final whistle both teams and supporters were unsure of the score such was the end to end attacking football by both sides who were a credit to Ladies Football. Well done all on a fabulous game. IFC YOUGHAL 2-07 ADRIGOLE 1-11

Heartbreak again for footballers

It is quite some time now since Youghal's Intermediate footballers were decisively beaten in a championship game, and last Saturday night in Newcestown was another agonising example of that , when they again lost out by the bare minimum to their now almost annual West Cork championship opposition Adrigole. These two teams have served up some thrilling encounters over the last 7 years, and they did'nt let us down this time round either.

Adrigole got off to the perfect start when their inter county star David Harrington struck over a point inside the first minute but inside the 5 minute mark Youghal found themselves in the driving seat when first Conor Sullivan kicked a great '45 before Micheal O Laochdha crashed the ball to the back of the net for a crucial goal. Playing with a strong wind, Youghal were expected to drive on from here, but their next score, a point from O Laochdha again did not arrive until the 20th minute and in between Kevin Goggin and Kevin Ger O Sullivan added a point each from frees to leave it 1-02 to 0-03 to Youghal. Then in the 25th minute Adrigole were awarded a free on the 21mtr line near the sideline and quick thinking by Kevin Goggin saw him play a one two with David Harrington before unleashing an unstoppable shot from an acute angle just under the crossbar for a wonderful goal. Youghal's best forward on the day Paul Moylan kicked another point before the short whistle to leave the score at half time 1-03 each. In that first half Youghal lost the services of full forward David O Mahoney who recieved a black card for a late tackle and who was replaced by Rory Walsh who was to have a very impressive game in the second half when settling in to this, his first ever Intermediate Championship match.

In the first 3 minutes of the second half Moylan and Kevin Goggin exchanged points and then in the 7th minute Matthew Farrell, who was having an absolutely fabulous game, again in his first championship outing, worked the ball beautifully into Paul Moylan who took the chance with a magnificent goal to leave the score 2-05 to 1-04 with Youghal looking good, even playing against the wind, and an exact replica of last years game at the same venue looked on. However, Adrigole upped the ante this time round and 5 unanswered points saw them get their nose in front 1-09 to 2-05 with less than 10 minutes remaining. Paul Moylan then kicked a point to level matters before Conor Sullivan converted a magnificent free against the wind to edge Youghal back in front with 7 minutes left. In those remaining minutes however Kevin Jer O Sullivan got 2 late points and hard as the lads tried, they just could not grab the equaliser even though they had a few great opportunities.

So again its hard luck on Tony Barrett and his team but there certainly is grounds for optimism looking at the displays of some of the new lads that came on to the panel this year, combined with the experience shown by other lads, none more so than the captain Paul O Driscoll who was just awesome in the heat of battle in that second half. Next up is East Cork neighbours Glanmire in round two in about 4 weeks time so plenty of time to try and sort out a few teething problems.

SHL Douglas 3-15 Youghal 2-18. Killeagh 1-18 Youghal 0-13. Our senior team had mixed fortunes in the league in the past week or so when first they played out an exciting draw with Douglas in Douglas and then last Saturday in Killeagh, in miserable conditions, and in front of a huge crowd, an attendance that a lot of clubs would be delighted with on Championship day, an understrength team could'nt cope with the second half performance of a well tuned Killeagh outfit. The first half was evenly contested with Youghal shading it on the score- board coming up to half time, when a defensive error let Killeagh in for a goal to leave the score at the break, Killeagh 1-07 Youghal 0-08. Youghal suffered another setback early in the second half when corner back Kenneth Walsh was sent off for a second yellow offence, and from here on Killeagh seemed to get the upper hand, and with the evergreen Joe Deane giving a majestic performance from both placed balls and play from the no 8 position, they ran out comfortable winners. So a bit of a setback for the lads but something they can work on over the next five weeks before their championship game with Newtownshandrum. YLFC U12 Notes Now that the season is in full swing, below is the latest from our U12 panel. After 8 weeks of training the girls are starting to gel as a panel with last year’s U10s blending in very well with their older counterparts. We have also picked up a few new players, welcome to all. With 37 girls on the U12 panel we have decided to enter 2 teams, Youghal Maroon and Youghal Gold for the 2014 league which started on the weekend of March 23rd. By having 2 teams this will give all girls plenty of game time to further develop their skills which is evident of the displays in the league so far. Fixtures Training Times Wed 6 – 7pm & Sat 11:30am – 12:30pm. You will receive a text for every match and training session, no text no match or training. Please let Cormac know on 0870508474 if your daughter cannot make either training or matches. So far we are encountering over 80% attendance at training with the majority who cannot make it letting us know. Membership Many thanks to those of you who have already submitted your membership of €50, which includes insurance and referee fees for the coming season. If you haven’t already done so you will need to complete a membership form and return to your manager. As non-members are not covered by insurance we will be enforcing a no-play policy over the coming weeks. Gum-Shields In line with the GAA, Ladies Football has introduced mandatory gum-shields for all players. Please ensure your daughter brings their gum shield to all training sessions and matches. Referees have been ordered to remove players who do not adhere to this policy. Safety of your daughter must be a priority at all times. Jewellery Please ensure that all jewellery is removed before training and matches. The risk of serious damage to fingers and ears is increased significantly by the wearing of jewellery. Referees will also ask for players to go off if they spot jewellery. Peil Camp

Best of luck to all of our members who are taking part in this year’s Peil Camp running from April 14th – 17th, 10am – 2pm each day. Match Reports 23/03/2014 U12GFL Youghal Maroon 4-9 Glanmire 0-2 Our Maroon team started off their league campaign with an unexpected win against an understrength Glanmire team. From the throw in the girls settled down to play open football and quickly got in the scoreboard through Kaiah and Amy. With Mary and Chloe well on top in mid-field the Youghal Girls pushed on their advantage to go in at half-time 3-6 to 0-1. Facing the wind in the second half the girls knew that Glanmire would put up it up to them. With our defence lead by captain Aisling holding their own against the Glanmire attack we finished strongly to run out deserving winners. Well done girls on a great team performance. 04/04/2014 U12GFL Youghal Gold 7-6 Bride Rovers 3-2 In what could only be described as horrible wet and misty conditions our Gold team commenced their league campaign against Bride Rovers in Magners Hill. Credit must be given to both teams for serving up an excellent game of football in difficult and tiring conditions. Lead by captain on the night Lesley the Youghal girls playing with a strong wind quickly settled into their game and registered their first score with a goal by Caoimhe. With Kate and Eabha top in mid-field plenty scoring opportunities were created but the Bride Rovers defence held firm. With our defence well on top through strong play from Rebecca, Abby and Hannah our forwards started to click with some lovely inter-passing movements from Ciara, Sorcha, Molly and Sarah resulting in a couple of well taken scores to leave the half –time score 4-3 to 1-1. Facing the elements in the 2nd half the Youghal girls knew that Bride Rovers would come at them and so it proved to be a tight second half but the Youghal girls finished strong to run out deserving winners. Next up is Mayfield away. 10/04/2014 U12GFL Youghal Maroon 8-9 Delaneys 0-8 In our 2ndleague game we travelled to Cork city to take on a young Delaneys team on a beautiful sunny evening. The Youghal girls continued on with their form from their previous game and after an inspired speech by captain on the night Hannah, quickly settled into playing open and fast football. Some excellent scores from Chloe and Kaiah settled the girls. Playing with the breeze the Youghal girls were well on top with Emma, Grainne, Leah and Amy adding to the scoreboard the team were comfortably on top at half-time. With the breeze to their backs Delaneys came out a transformed side in the 2nd half and never gave up giving our defence plenty to do. With Caoimhe, Emily, Hannah, Jenny and Aoibhe on top of their game we ran deserving winners against a gallant Delaneys team. Next up is a home game against Erins Own. Security awareness while attending at Youghal GAA With the high playing season now upon us, and many games taking place each week at the Club (and indeed other grounds), be aware that it is just possible not everyone attending is present for the purpose of supporting the home team or the opposition. Players, mentors and supporters are advised to secure their valuables and property while attending at the Club. Perhaps parents could advise their kids to leave phones, ipods etc. at home when going to matches or training sessions. Under 10 match report Youghal U10's played there first game in the U12 development league at home to Cloyne. Youghal were a bit slow to start but once they settled they quickly took control of the game. All the Youghal girls played very well and we were very impressed with the way they played considering they hadn't played a game since last year. Cloyne to be fair tried there best, and they kept coming at Youghal, and there goalkeeper denied Youghal on more than one occasion, but on the day the Youghal girls were just to strong and won well. Well done girls keep up the training, all the hard work is paying off. . Team on the day L Hayes, J Kelly, C Hannon, M Tobin, R Walsh, J Savage, A Cashman, B O'Flynn, A Cashman, C Kennedy, K McCarthy, N Kilgannon, F Rea, A Welsh, A O'Connell, E Delaney, M Lucey, E o'Regan, M Kelly. Next Up Agahda away. Under 16s LGF League B. 12/03/14 Delaneys 0-3 Youghal 5-15 This was Youghal’s first league game of the season and we had to travel to the north of the city. It was the Youghal girls who made the brighter start with some fine scores coming from all six forwards, and even the midfielders were getting in on the act. As a contest this game was over after 20min,the Youghal girls were just to strong in all areas of the field. It was very encouraging to see fast moving ball from our backs to the forward line with scores coming from this type of play. Even thou many of the Youghal girls put in great performances, one girl stood out on this occasion. This was a young lady who normally plays in the back line but on this occasion moved to the forwards, and what a move it was. Her name is Ellen O`Brian and she put in a shift of a lifetime with a great attacking display. So well done to all involved on this great start to the League. TEAM: A.Aurther, N.Kelly, L.Dempsey, C.O.Brian, A.O.Sullivan(C), E.Farrell, H.O.Connell C.O.Keeffe, E.Nolan, M.Hannon, S.O.Connell, E.O.Brian, C.Crowley, C.O.Keeffe, A.Flavin, S.Hannon. Under 16s ECL Carrigtohill 1-4 Youghal 5-12 This was Youghals 2nd game of this campaign and we travelled the short distance to Carrigohill. It was the Youghal girls who got off to a brighter start, as of the first 10min Youghal were well ahead on the scoreboard. Youghal were attacking at every opportunity and took some great scores with Cloda O Keeffee taking our first of 5 goals. Our forwards were on good form with all six getting on the scoreboard and took many of the chances that came their way,an improvement on passed games. Not to forget our backs, again the back 6 stood up to everything Carrigtohill through at them, and carrig had to work really hard for every score. On this occasion two girls stood out and they were Cat.O.Keeffe and Lucy Sheeann at midfield. They were at the centre of every attack on the day and both got on the scoreboard. There is a good team spirit within the team at the moment and lets hope this continues for the future. Well done all. Team: E.Nolan, N.Kelly, E.Farrell, C.O.Brian, M.Hannon, C.Landers, H.O.Connell, Cat.O.Keeffee, L.Sheeann, C.Crowley, S.O.Connell, E.O.Brian, S.Hannon, C.O.Keeffe, A.Flavin. 14/04/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 14 Apr 2014, 02:25 by Doi Brame [ updated 14 Apr 2014, 02:25] Special EGM At a specially convened meeting last week in Club Aras, the club, in deciding to amalgamate with the Youghal Ladies Football Club, heralded a new era by forming The Youghal GAA Club, under which both codes will be under the one banner but the Ladies Football will still operate as a sub committee and have representation on the Youghal Gaa Executive. We congratulate all the people who worked tirelessly to make this momentous occasion come to fruition, none more so than Christy Cooney who, over the last few years has put a huge input into the task in hand. RESULTS. SHL ROUND 3. YOUGHAL 1-12 ERINS OWN 1-13. Another super effort from the lads that just fell short of gaining another brace of points. Having scored a late goal to lead by two points entering the final five minutes it looked good for the home side but Erins Own replied with another green flag to deny Youghal the points. However "Rome was'nt built in a day" and the progress at Senior level is certainly evident. SHL Round 4. Youghal 1-18 St Finbarrs 2-12. Well if the progress at this levl was evident in the last game, it certainly went up another notch in this game played in Togher. A wonderful display and more importantly another 2 points for the lads and the news last week that Bill Cooper had been recalled to the Cork Senior panel certainly had the desired effect on Bill, as he contributed a whopping 1-7 to the scoreboard. IFL Youghal 0-7 Cloyne 2-9. An understrength Youghal side were beaten by Cloyne in the League last Friday night in Cloyne, and must now try and regroup as their championship outing against Adrigole is only a few weeks away. A positive on the night was the impressive display by one of the new kids on the block Danny Walsh. OTHER RESULTS. JFL DIV2. Youghal 1-9 Carrigtwohill 0-3. JH Challenge. Youghal 1-9 Shamrocks 2-8. About 30 years has elapsed since the last parish leagues were played in Youghal and it was wonderful to see them being relaunched last Friday night in Club Arus by the chairman and secretary of Eochaill Og Alan Geary and Andrew Murphy. In attendance also were special guests Frank Keane who relived the leagues of times gone past, Sean Crowley, Cork Games Development Administrator with Cork Rebel Og, Ger Motherway Chairman Youghal Gaa Club, and Cork Senior pannelist's Patrick Horgan and Bill Cooper. There was also a very impressive display of old photographs hanging on the walls of the hall on the night, and we thank everyone for their contrbution especially Assumpta Parker. There are three trophies up for grabs for the tournament and these were kindly donated by the families of the late George Bulman, Tom (Midge) Pomphrett and Robbie Sullivan and we are eternally grateful for their kindness. The draw for the teams that will compete in the leagues, which will commence on Monday 28th of April are as follows with their respective managers; NA FIANNA (Alan Fox/Pat Mackey) v SETANTA (Brian Murphy) THE DAVITT'S (Vincent Murray) v THE GAEL'S (Alan Geary) CUCHULAINN(John Bulman) v THE CROKES (H NICHOLSON). May we wish all teams the very best of luck. 24/03/2014 - Youghal GAA Notes posted 29 Mar 2014, 06:52 by Doi Brame GOOD START FOR NEW COACH. SHL YOUGHAL 1-14 CARRIGTWOHILL 0-14. Youghal got their new coach Ray Delaney off to the perfect start with a hard earned victory over Carrigtwohill in Magniers Hill last Sunday morning before a good crowd to record their first brace of points since being elevated to Senior status this season and as it was only their second outing in the league, having to give best to County Champions Midleton in the first round by a couple of points, they can look forward with optimism to the next few games in their build up to the championship. The first half was evenly contested with the home team leading by the bare minimum at half time 0-8 to 0-7. Youghal took some good scores in that period with the first score coming from Gareth Hogan, making a welcome return to GAA activities after a few years sabbatical, a couple of good efforts from the Ring brothers Barry (1) and Damien (2) A Curtin and Bill Cooper one each and a fine brace from the impressive Andrew Joyce. Carrig on the other hand were reliant on the accuracy of Thomas Hogan from placed efforts. Damien Ring added 3 more points and Andrew Curtin chipped in with a beauty , while Carrig also added 3 points to leave 2 between the teams 0-12 to 0-10 midway through the second half, before the game swung in Youghal's favour big time when Brett Moloney ran on to a long delivery before controlling the ball beautifully to slot home from close range, and this was followed by two great points in as many minutes by Andrew Curtin to one for Carrig, to leave Youghal in a commanding position leading 1-14 to 0-11. Carrig had other ideas however and finished with a flourish adding 3 more points and Hogan had a chance to level matters with the last puck of the game when his free took a deflection and went wide of the posts. So a good win and a lot of positives to be taken from the game and while they were missing a few players so were Carrigtwohill. A few challenge games are lined up for the next week or so before the next few league games v Erin's Own and St Finbarr's. Team: R Cunningham, Lee Mc Carthy, J Grace, K Walsh. Gaelscoil Choráin second & third class boys did exceptionally well representing their school by reaching the final of the regional section of the Sciath na Scol Indoor Hurling Championships on Thursday last the 13th of February which were held in Little Island. They drew with Castlemartyr and beat two teams from C.B.S. Midleton on their path to the final. They were beaten in the final by a strong Dungourney team. Mait sibh buachaillí. Panel. Second up was Watergrasshill and with Aine Bhreathnach going in goal and pulling off some great saves & with the help of Miriam Nic Inneiri & Sinead Nic an tSabhasagh in the backs keeping a clean sheet and Kaiah Bulman & Saoirse ni Chonaill in midfield keeping the Watergrasshill backs under pressure with Riun Bhreathnach work rate up front setting up Emily Nic An Ghalloghlaigh for two great goals so we won 2 nil. Next was the semi- final against the team of the day Riverstown as the two games before all the girls played in this but Riverstown were to strong and won. Scoil Chorain team Emily Nic An Ghalloghlaigh, Miriam Nic Inneiri, Sinead Nic an tSabhasaigh, Aine Bhreathnach, Kaiah Bulman, Sorcha ni Choirc, Caitun ni Mhurchu, Flavia Rea, Saoirse ni Chonaill & Riun Bhreathnach. Cork Thursday the 31st of January last. Youghal’s first game was against Dungourney as this was our first time playing in an indoor blitz. We would have hoped for an easier game to start with but the lads played very well and we had a few scoring changes early on in the game but with no luck. Dungourney led 3 goals to 1 at half time, the second half went much the same as the first we were defeated. Mayfield were up next and this was going to be a much closer game. Youghal moved a few players around and had a better game plan and from the off Youghal lads were all over Mayfieled. We played with 1 up front and were shoot at all and with Morgan O’Tuathaigh & Kyle Seoigh in the backs Goalkeeper Aodhain de Paor didn’t see much of the ball but looked after whatever ball came his way. With the Mayfield Goalkeeper having the game of his life and getting in front of everything. Micheal MacCarthaigh, Seamus O’Maitiu and Seamus O’Maitiú could hit at him but the game ended up at draw but there was great skilled shown. Last game was a local affair against very close neighbours Kyle and you couls see no one wanted to lost this one. Youghal started with their best player in the tournament Oisin O’Foghlú up front and Oisin out of midfield we couldn’t get the ball upto him so the pressure was on Youghal. The back and goalkeeper Kyle O´hAinmhire and with Kyle doing everything he could were 2 goals down at half time. In the second half Ben O’Conaill & Eoin O’Foghlu came on and right from the stat Youghal were back in control with Oisin back out the field and of the game getting two great goals. In the end it finished up in a fair results with 2-2. It was a great day with all players playing in all games together with a treat from KFC’s on the way hom. Youghal’s team were Kyle Seoigh, Kyle O hAimhire, Eoin O’Foghlu, Seamus O’Maitiu, Ben O’Connall, Michael McCarthaigh, Aodhain dePaor, Morgan O’Tuathaigt & Oisin O’Foghlú. 06/03/2014 - YLFC Notes posted 6 Mar 2014, 01:04 by Doi Brame “Building Resilience with Youghal Ladies Football” A classic definition of resilience is the ability to bounce back, cope and/or deal with stressful or challenging situations. It also means that as a human being we adapt and change to these situations or challenges in a way that will not leave us with lasting consequences, either, physically, emotionally or psychologically. Developing a greater level of resilience won’t stop bad or stressful things from happening, but can reduce the level of disruption a stressor has and the time taken to recover. The Relationship with Resilience and Youghal Ladies Football evolved from an evening within the club on this very topic over 2 yrs ago with the main focus been on player welfare. The benefit of developing a new club is how you set out your stall with the development of player’s particularly in a short lived game in Ladies football. The benefit for a club getting this right from the onset is crucial to bringing silverware to the club in future years particularly in a serious competitive standard in Cork football. This is very evident with such a high standard of Cork football across all divisions. It’s based on personal development in everything done and developing as young females in our community. Youghal Ladies Football secretary has attempted to put this into some context; “We adapted the resilience theme particularly with the U 16 team who now have a kit specially designed to highlight this on the field and to the wider community. The kit highlights the many simple steps that Youghal ladies football give in developing young ladies in their own development and in the development as a wider community. The club has laid down basic principals of development in young ladies and play a lot of emphasis is been placed on protective factor’s in such development from stressors in their lives and been able to cope with and “bounce back” from issues in their lives. It’s positive reinforcement and belief” The fundamental elements of what we develop:  Self esteem: particularly those young ladies that are in the early stages on Adolescents, this is crucial in self belief and affirmation about themselves.  Dealing with failure: This is a very important area for young ladies particularly how they see themselves in this area. It’s the bounce back ability that the emphasis is put on  Respect: For themselves, for their coaches and for their community.  Decision making: Crucial in the area of choice and direction  Coping with Success: Sometimes it appears winning is everything???  Boundaries: Crucial in Development from child hood to adolescents.  Identity: Assisting young Ladies in their own identity and spirit of Community in a positive manner through the medium of Ladies Football. Memorable Dinner Dance. Last Saturday night's victory dinner dance in Club Arus provided one of the best social events the Youghal club has held in many a long year. The meal provided was of the highest quality, the entertainment by 'The Boogie Band' and DJ 'Twee' was in keeping with the impressive reputation that both of these have built up in the music arena locally, and the 'Full House' signs were up with quite a while since tickets went on sale. Special guests on the night were Kieran McGann representing the Cork County Board, Robert Frost Munster Council, Sammy Revins Mayor of Youghal and Ken Brooks and Steven O'Sullivan, representing Brooks Super Value our sponsors, all of whom were accompanied by their wives. The highlight of the dinner every year is the awards presented to the individual winners of various categories and this years winners were; Hurler of the year for the second year in a row, Ritchie Cunningham; Footballer of the year Aron Kenny and club person of the year went to Catriona Hill. A new award that was initiated this year is a Special Merit Award, and this was presented, to John Parker, who got a tremendous reception from the packed hall for his contribution to Youghal Gaa down through the decades, and who is still involved in practically every aspect of all club activities. Well done John you so deserved it. The all conquering Intermediate hurlers were also presented with their County and Munster medals by Kieran Mc Gann and Robert Frost respectivly. Our Junior hurlers also recieved their East Cork League medals. Fitzgibbon Cup. Bill Cooper played with CIT in this years competition, and despite beating UCC in the semi final, had to give best to WIT in the final last Saturday in Belfast, despite Bill's great effort's, scoring two massive points. JFL DIV2 Glanmire 0-10 Youghal 1-08. Youghal travelled to Glanmire for this second game of the league, and after trailing 0-7 to 0-1 at half time, produced a remarkable second half performance to record a magnificient 1 point victory, and join Ballinacurra and Carrigtwohill as table toppers. Outstanding displays from, Dale O'Donoghue, Rory Walsh, Pa O'Mahoney, Aron Kenny and David O'Mahoney who scored 1-1, gave manager John Parker great cause for optimism for the rest of the season. 19/02/2014 - Club News posted 19 Feb 2014, 10:35 by Doi Brame Footballers Off To a Flier Both the Junior and Intermediate teams got off to a good start in their respective league games in the past week.

JFL DIV 2. Youghal 2-6 Glenville 1-6, Youghal opened their Div 2 league campaign with a good win over Glenville last week in Magniers Hill, when they battled hard to gain the first 2 points of the campaign. A good performance by the evergreen Ken Dempsey, who got one of the goals, Aron Kenny, Jonathan Ormonde and David Scanlon, who scored the second goal, ensured Youghal got off to the perfect start for the season. The teams second round game v Glanmire last Sunday was postponed and their next game is away to Castlemartyr.

IFL DIV4 Youghal 1-11 Aghabollogue 1-8 Youghal's first outing in this year's league campaign pitted them against last year's beaten county finalists and the team that put them out of last years championship at the 1/4 final stage. Midway through the first half Youghal had a 0-6 to 0-3 advantage after good scores from David O'Mahoney, David Scannell, Conor O'Sullivan, Ken Dempsey, and two points from Nigel Roche. From there to the short whistle Youghal improved their performance and a brace of points from Micheal O'Laocha, who gave a man of the match display, and another point from David O'Mahoney, gave Youghal a 0-9 to 0-4 interval lead. The second half got better for the home team when first Conor O'Sullivan added a point before Ken Dempsey drilled home a goal and the same player added a point to give Youghal a commanding lead of 1-11 to 0-4 after 10 minutes. For some unexplicable reason however this proved to be Youghal's last score of the game, and Aghabollogue slowly got back into the game and added 1-4 to close the gap to three points at the end. However Tony Barrett and his selectors can be happy with themselves after this initial outing and minus a few regulars they can feel well pleased with the performances of some of the new recruits, most notably Ronan Suliivan at corner back, and David Scanlon who had very impressive games. Youghal's next league fixture is away to Kanturk next Sunday. The time and date will be confirmed on Community Radio Youghal. Team; C Spillane, P O'Mahoney, P O'Driscoll, R O'Sullivan, M Cronin, A Kenny, B O'Sullivan, C O'Sullivan 0-2, Barry Ring, Nigel Roche 0-2, M O'Laocha 0-2, D O'Mahoney 0-2, J Ormonde, K Dempsey 1-2, D Scanlon 0-1. Subs used; J O'Mahoney, D Donoghue, A Joyce, A O'Connor. Cork Panelists; Congratulations to Ollie Dempsey, Louise Dempsey and Andrew Joyce who made the Cork panels for minor hurling, U16 camogie and minor football respectively and we wish them the best of luck for the season. Best Wishes. We would like to wish one of the stars of our wonderful Intermediate team of 2013 Alan Frahill O'Connor the best of luck when he will shortly undergo surgery on an injury picked up in the All Ireland semi final. Youghal 0-15 Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2-11. Our hearts went out to every player who took the field for Youghal's Intermediate team over the last twelve months when the final whistle sounded at a rain and windswept Gaelic grounds in Limerick at around 3.20 last Saturday. Having watched the game with one of Youghal's greatest sons, Jim Molloy, now resident in Kerry, lumps in throats and tears were the order of the day, not so much at the loss of the game by two points, but with pride at the manner in which this unbelievable group of lads nearly pulled off one of the greatest comebacks of all time, when they found themselves trailing by a whopping 12 points two minutes into the second half, having played against a gale force wind in the first half. It was hard to take for all concerned, even for young Matthew Hennessy the team mascot who looked on as his heroes came off the field, completely drained of every ounce of energy. But lets also take our hats off to a superb Kilnadeema outfit for the way they battled to contain Youghal in those closing frantic minutes, when they were playing with 14 men. The opening 10 minutes were even enough with Brendan Ring, Leigh Desmond and Alan Frahill O'Connor getting 3 points against the strong wind to match the opposition's same return from playing with that hurricane like conditions. Then Kilnadeema took control with 4 unanswered points and just after corner back and Galway senior star David Tierney cut a magnificent sideline ball over the bar, a score that did not go unnoticed by former Galway legend in the stand Cyril Farrell, they struck for the first of two goals in the space of 8 minutes to set them up for a half time lead of 2-09 to 0-4, Brendan Ring, who had another unbelievable game getting one back for Youghal and it could have been worse for Youghal only for a magnificent point blank save by Ritchie Cunningham the Youghal goalkeeper. One of the Kilnadeema goals was scored by Alvin Mitchell, the other from full forward Brian Molloy who scored a total of 1-7 in the game and who also incidentally scored 9 points against Limerick in the All Ireland minor semi final. Full back Darren O'Donoghue was also very impressive, as he was in the All Ireland minor final against Waterford. Youghal needed a good start to the second half but Kilnadeema scored the first point after 2 minutes to make it a twelve point game, and it really put it up to Youghal now, and boy did they respond. Brett Moloney, who was introduced at half time along with Ciaran O'Mahoney, was to make a huge impression on the game. Eight unanswered points, including some wonderful long range efforts, two in particular from way out the field from substitute Brendan Coleman reduced the margin to 4 with 9 minutes remaining, and with Kilnadeema now playing with only fourteen men after midfielder Alan Kelly was sent off for a second yellow offence things looked good for Youghal. Kilnadeema then put a stop to Youghal's grasp on the game when one of their players went down on the ground for no obvious reason for nearly 3 minutes, and this took the sting out of Youghal. Each side added a point before a long ball into the Kilnadeema goalmouth area was pulled on by Ciaran O'Mahioney, only to see his effort to agonisingly wide, and with it came the final whistle. While i must compliment the referee on a spledid game, I could'nt for the life of me figure where he only got 2 minutes of injury time. But that will not be given in years to come as a reason for loosing this one, as we certainly missed a few easy chances and conceeded some easy scores in the first half. So even though the season is now over for this team, the dream can certainly live on. To me this season has marked the beginning of a new era in Youghal Gaa. The experience gained by the panel in this wonderful adventure will stand to them for the coming years. They are a credit to the club, to themselves their families and supporters. To Christy Cooney and his selectors and backroom team, we salute you on a wonderful season. Our thanks to our great band of supporters who followed the team all year, even to London for the 1/4 final. To our sponsors, especially Brook's Super Value and all the other people who helped along the way we say a big thank you. To Community Radio Youghal, for their outstanding coverage of all our championship games this year, and to O'Neill's oil, coal and gas for sponsoring the outside broadcasts, many many thanks indeed. So finally, to the panel of players who togged out Saturday and all season, who gave us memories to cherish for the rest of our lives, we salute you. Ritchie Cunningham, Kenneth Walsh, John Grace, Brendan O'Sullivan, Micheal Cronin, Conor Spillane(0-2) Barry Ring, Leigh Desmond(0-2) Nigel Roche, Damien Ring(0-1) Alan Frahill O'Connor(0-1 Bill Cooper capt,(0-2) James O'Mahoney, Ollie Dempsey, Brendan Ring(0-5). Awards Function. On Sunday afternoon last Club Arus hosted a wonderful afternoon of awards to the Juvenile sections of the camogie, ladies football and hurling and football club. The hall was full to capacity as our future heroes accepted their various awards from three of our magnificent hurlers from the Senior team, Leigh Desmond, Ciaran O'Mahoney and John Grace, who got a prolonged standing ovation from the appreciative audience when they arrived on stage, and our sincere thanks to the lads for their commitment to this very special day for our young sport stars, considering it was only 24 hours since they lost the All Ireland semi final. To Alan Geary and everybody else who organised the day, we say well done on another fantastic day for the youth of our club. Club Lotto. Numbers drawn on the 27/1/2014. 14, 15, 23, 24.Jackpot €7,230. The thoughts of Kilnadeema/Leitrim joint manager Pat Donohue after watching his charges defeat a much fancied Youghal in a gripping AIB All- Ireland IHC club semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday. By Therese O’Callaghan The Connacht champions, reduced to 14 men in the final quarter, were pushed all the way but were worthy winners following a splendid contest despite very testing conditions. They march on to Croke Park next Saturday in search of ultimate glory against Kilkenny’s Rower- Inistioge.

“We didn’t go well last year [2012],” explained Donohue. “This year we won the Galway semi-final by a point. We won the last group game by a point. We won the Connacht final by two points and our backs were to the wall again today. These lads battle and give you everything they have.”

“We had a couple of Galway minors out there but we also have the likes of Kevin Boyle, our goalkeeper who is over 40. Our [regular] goalie broke his shoulder in the county final and he is out for a couple of months. Kevin started off the championship at full-forward but we convinced him to go into goals.”

It was one of those county minors that stole the show. Full forward Brian Molloy, who featured in the 2013 All-Ireland final loss to Waterford, was in superb form. The talented attacker racked up 1-7 and he was also the provider for the other goal. These two majors before the break were crucial to the outcome as Kilnadeema/Leitrim turned over 2-9 to 0-4 ahead, having won the toss and played with the gusting wind.

For their part, battle-hardened Youghal came close. However, two points was the nearest they got.

Disappointed manager Christy Cooney said the three-pointers were significant.

“Today wasn’t our day. They took their goals in the first half which left us with a lot to do. With five minutes to go you’d think we might get a draw. It didn’t work out. They were a little bit better. They took their chances, that was the difference.

“We will take a couple of weeks off now. Fellas need a break, get their heads around this. We will all learn from it. We look forward to playing the senior championship in 2014.”

It was 0-3 apiece by the 13th minute but once Kilnadeema/Leitrim – which is located near Loughrea – settled with former county player David Tierney immense at midfield, they notched 2-6 to Youghal’s point. Alvin Mitchell’s goal on 20 minutes put them 1-7 to 0-3 in front. But it was Molloy’s green flag a minute from the interval that did the most damage.

Youghal needed to resume all guns blazing. They double substituted at half-time and made a number of positional switches. Whilst Molloy restarted the scoring, slowly Youghal began to eat into the 12-point lead. The gap was down to seven points when corner back Mark Kelly received a second yellow card in the 48th minute.

The rain came down as Youghal floated over five more unanswered points — Leigh Desmond, Bill Cooper, Brendan Ring and Brendan Coleman stepped up. It was heart- stopping, a two-point game with one minute remaining 2-10 to 0-14. Then, there was a stoppage for an injury to one of the Galway players and when the action resumed Molloy (after missing a few previously) drilled over a magnificent free into the strong wind. A three- point difference now.

The Youghal men frantically searched for a goal to force extra time but they were pushed back by dogged defending. A Brendan Ring point was their lot. Scorers for Kilnadeema/Leitrim: B Molloy (1-7, four frees), A Mitchell (1-0), S Lawless (0-2), D Tierney (sl) and T Tierney (0-1 each).

Scorers for Youghal: Brendan Ring (0-6, three frees), L Desmond, B Cooper and B Coleman (0- 2 each), D Ring, A Frahill-O’Connor, and C Spillane (free) (0-1 each).

Referee: Tony Carroll (Offaly).

Game-changer

The 10 minutes before the break. Kilnadeema/Leitrim’s goals arrived during this period particularly Brian Molloy’s strike a minute from the interval, leaving Youghal with a mountain to climb.

Talk of the town

The dismal weather. Players had to contend with high winds and heavy conditions. But they got on with it.

Did that just happen?

A Galway club is in line to win the All-Ireland Intermediate hurling title for the first time. Killimordaly, Tommy Larkins and Cappataggle were beaten finalists in ’07, ’08 and ’09. Maybe ’14?

Best on show

Brian Molloy was both finisher and creator. He tallied 1-7 and, although he missed a couple in the second half, he was very impressive and his pointed free on 60 minutes was crucial as the game was still in the balance.

The man in black

Tony Carroll did a good job on a tough day for hurling. The dismissal of Mark Kelly was for two yellow cards. Youghal followers argued for a bit more added time. No disputing that the better team won though.

What’s next?

All-Ireland club final next Saturday for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Throw-in at 5.30pm in Croke Park. Senior hurling beckons for both clubs this season. © Irish Examiner Ltd. All rights reserved
