Cañada College/County of San Mateo University Studies Degree

Cañada College, in partnership with the County of San Mateo, offers County employees a new on-site degree program called University Studies. The degree in University Studies is designed to award the student with an Associate Degree while completing requirements to transfer to a four-year institution. Read on for more specific information.

What exactly is a University Studies Degree? The Associate in Arts in University Studies Degree offered at the County is comprised of the general education courses which will satisfy admission requirements to the California State University (CSU) system, as well as Associate Degree requirements at Cañada College.

How many units must I complete? University Studies requires the completion of 60 transferable units. This is the same unit requirement for admission to a CSU campus. Most of Cañada’s courses are transferable to CSU, with the exception of English and Math below the transfer level.

What courses will I take? The course pattern for University Studies breaks down as follows: . Area A1 Oral . Area C Arts and Communication (3 Humanities (9) units) . Area D Social, . Area A2 Written Political, & Econ. Comm. (3) Institutions & Behavior . Area A3 Critical (9) Thinking (3) . Area E Self . Area B1 Physical Development (3) Science (3+) . Ethnic Studies (3) * . Area B2 Life Science . Computer (3+) Competency (test or . Area B3 Lab portion of course) * B1 or B2 . Electives to bring total . Area B4 Transfer Math transfer units to 60 (3+) *Cañada General Education requirement

Will I really be ready to transfer at the same time that I earn my Associate’s Degree? Yes, if you satisfactorily complete 60 units that meet the course pattern outlined above, you will earn your AA Degree. You will also meet the general admission requirements for the California State University system, as well as many other four-year institutions. You will need additional courses only if you choose to transfer into a major that requires extensive major preparation, i.e. Business Administration, Nursing, Engineering.
