COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to introduce, develop, and examine the gymnastic skills, aerobic activities, movements, and exercises that can improve physical fitness and aerobic capacity as well as rhythmic/dance activities and skills. Emphasis is placed on guiding students to develop and design their own gymnastics routine with gymnastics skills that they can utilize in everyday life as a fitness routine and as a lifelong activity. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1) To discuss and practice the following skills and techniques: - Conditioning and fitness components - Stretching and warm up exercises - Music and rhythm incorporated in gymnastics - Conditioning and fitness through diversity of gymnastics movements, skills and activities, and other rhythmical/gymnastics skills such as: Pilates, aerobic dance routines, fitness routines for gymnasts and dancers, Fitness testing, fitness components; health related and skill related components; and rhythmic gymnastics skills 2) To perform movements, activities, skills and/or routines specific to participants’ abilities and to utilize skills learned in each class in order to perform rhythmical sequences and gymnastics routines in their everyday life 3) To offer the opportunity to improve participants’ coordinative structured movements and skills 4) To create rhythmic patterns using gymnastics and rhythmic exercises 5) To offer the opportunity to improve participants’ physical fitness.

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION Department of Health and Human Performance Absentee Policy: Missing 6 or more academic hours of class is considered excessive. An hour class absence = 1 miss and a 1.5 hour class absence = 1.5 misses. In PEB classes students have the option of receiving an ‘S’ or a ‘U’ grade which will not be used in GPA calculation (with an ‘S’ you still get the hour credit). This will be contracted by the last formal day of class. You may not receive an ‘S’ if you miss more than 6 academic hours; you will receive the grade you earn. Once a grade has been issued, no S/U to letter grade change (or letter grade to S/U) will be permitted No attendance make-up is permitted. Late arrival and/or early departure may be counted against the student’s attendance. Attendance will be taken at 4:05pm. Appropriate clothing and active participate in all class activities is necessary for full attendance credit. Students may be excused up to 2 absences only if a note (or other evidence) is provided by the employer, physician, professor, etc. to explain the absence.

GRADING: Attendance/ Participation 100 Points, Mid-term exam: (Pyramids) 100 Points, Labs (20 points each) 100 Points, Final exam: (Novelty project) 100 Points

The Grading System to be used is based on percentages: A = 94% and above, A- = 90-93, B+ = 86-89, B = 84-85, B- = 80-83, C+ = 76-79, C = 74-75, C- = 70-73, D+ = 66-69, D = 64-65, D- = 60-63, F = 59 and below. “I”s and “W”s are not available as a grade once coursework has been completed just because you do not like your grade.. If you stop attending class and do not have yourself formally dropped (your name is still on the roll), you will receive an ‘F’ in the class. Tuesday, November 4th is the last day to withdraw from a class. Remember that you are only allowed 6 Ws throughout your academic career and drops must be initiated by the student. Students need to get a drop form from the Welcome Center, fill it out, and have it signed by the instructor by the due date. Do this early as not all instructors are on campus full time.

DRESS CODE Clothing suitable for exercising - movement activities e.g. T-shirt, gym shorts / sweat pants and appropriate footwear is mandatory for this class.
