Governor Charlie Baker and Senator Michael Rodrigues to Speak at the 50th Celebration at Battleship Cove

In 1964, the citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including over 6000 school children, banded together to save the battleship, USS Massachusetts, from being scrapped, and to bring her to the waterfront of historic Fall River on June 12, 1965. More than 500,000 people lined the shores of Narragansett Bay and the Taunton River that day to welcome their ship to the South Coast with cheers of jubilation and well wishes.

During her dedication on August 14, 1965, the battleship’s historic significance was further recognized as she was made the official World War II Memorial for the state and opened as a public museum. Her first year she welcomed nearly 250,000 visitors from all over the world.

Throughout the years, she has been joined by the Destroyer, USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., the submarine the USS Lionfish, PT Boats 617 and 796, and the missile corvette, Hiddensee forming the world’s largest collection of historic US naval ships, and the site of 5 National Historic Landmarks.

Today Battleship Cove, as America’s Fleet Museum, stands as one of Southeastern Massachusetts’ most popular tourist attractions and education centers, providing a lasting voice for the brave men and women who have served the United States of America.

Now commemorating its 50th year, Battleship Cove celebrates the American spirit with a week of amazing activities planned for August 9-16, 2015, including musical performances, Stage-Door Canteen musical, Rosie the Riveter Look-a-Like Contest, classic car show, Dance Canteen on the Fantail, Clam Boil on the Battleship, and a citywide parade.

“It is a privilege to join the Commonwealth for the historic anniversary of the USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove. Celebrating 50 years is about more than the passage of time; this event will connect people between the past and present, reminding them of the sacrifices made by our military veterans. Residents rarely have such an opportunity to see history come alive, and I encourage everyone to visit this National Historic Landmark during its weeklong display.” –Governor Charlie Baker. Governor Baker will speak during the commemoration on August 14, aboard the battleship.

Also speaking will be Senator Michael J. Rodrigues, Fall River Mayor Sam Sutter, Mr. Joseph Feitelberg, the first President of the USS Massachusetts when she became a museum ship, Director of the Naval History and Heritage Command and Curator of the Navy, Rear Admiral J. Samuel Cox, USN (Ret) and current USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee President, Mr. Carl F. Sawejko.

“Battleship Cove is a cultural treasure right here in Fall River, offering a unique and memorable glimpse into our country’s military history,” said Senator Michael J. Rodrigues. “I am thrilled with the incredible work and education that has been completed here over the past fifty years, and look forward to countless future visitors getting a chance to experience this patriotic and historic asset.”

Carl Sawejko, the President of Battleship Cove said, “Fifty years ago, an amazing show of teamwork, dedication and the American spirit saved the USS Massachusetts and brought this WWII battleship to Fall River. As we celebrate her commemoration, we give thanks to all those who have worked so hard to preserve this national treasure and provide a lasting voice for the veterans who so bravely served aboard her.”

This will also be the 70th and last reunion of the USS Massachusetts’ Crew Members who served during World War II. Former Crewmember, Bernie Silveria, Gunners Mate, 5th Division said, “This last reunion, which I understand is the longest annual reunion in the history of Navy reunions, will tell all interested, that patriotism is still alive in our great country, the United States of America.”

The reunion will take place on Saturday, August 15, at 1:00pm. The former crew, as members of the Greatest Generation, will also act as Grand Marshals in the Fall River City Parade on August 16th. These events also will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII in Japan.
