VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS POST 6734 OF 13 GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR ITS EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO 14 SOUTH CAROLINA’S VETERANS AND THE COMMUNITY, 15 AND TO CONGRATULATE THE STAFF AND COMRADES 16 FOR THEIR NUMEROUS AWARDS IN 2016 FROM THE 17 DEPARTMENT OF SOUTH CAROLINA VETERANS OF 18 FOREIGN WARS. 19 20 Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the 21 Captain Charles F. Gandy, Jr. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6734 22 was recognized as the best in the State, winning four of the seven 23 awards presented during the 2016 Department of South Carolina 24 Veterans of Foreign Wars State Convention; and 25 26 Whereas, the James W. Cothran 20152016 Award for Most 27 Outstanding VFW Post was awarded to Post 6734, a prestigious 28 award that reflects the hard work, personal sacrifices, and 29 dedication the comrades displayed in working collectively to meet 30 the criteria for this award; and 31 32 Whereas, immediate past Commander E. J. Irick received the 33 Samuel U. Roach Award for Most Outstanding Post Commander 34 for the second consecutive year; and 35 36 Whereas, current Quartermaster Garfield L. Woods received the 37 Melvin L. “Mel” Emore Award for Most Outstanding Post 38 Quartermaster also for the second consecutive year; and 39 40 Whereas, current Junior Vice Commander Roy Miller received the 41 Louis Thornton Award for the Most Outstanding Veterans of

[249] 1 1 Foreign Wars Member, as well as the WebSite Award for Most 2 Outstanding Post WebSite; and 3 4 Whereas, these distinguished awards and recognitions exemplify 5 the outstanding work the post is doing in serving South Carolina’s 6 veterans and the community by performing above and beyond the 7 standards of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Organization; and 8 9 Whereas, Captain Charles F. Gandy, Jr. Post 6734 has partnered 10 with the United States Department of Defense program to 11 commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Era. In 12 this role the post has held Lapel Pinning Ceremonies for more than 13 seven hundred veterans who gave so much and got so little. 14 Ceremonies have been held at churches, colleges, Military 15 Appreciation Day football games, class reunions, birthday parties, 16 community centers, the NAACP 34th Annual Freedom Fund 17 Banquet, and Veterans Day programs, giving these comrades a 18 long overdue expression of appreciation for their service and 19 gratitude for their safe return home; and 20 21 Whereas, under the leadership of current Post Commander 22 Margaret O. Richardson, the first female elected to this position, 23 Captain Charles F. Gandy, Jr. Post 6734 will continue its legacy of 24 being the best in the State; and 25 26 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate commend the 27 staff and comrades of VFW Post 6734 for more than seven 28 decades of excellence in service. Now, therefore, 29 30 Be it resolved by the Senate: 31 32 That the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognizes and 33 honors the Captain Charles F. Gandy, Jr. Veterans of Foreign Wars 34 Post 6734 of Greenville County for its exemplary service to South 35 Carolina’s veterans and the community, and congratulates the staff 36 and comrades for their numerous awards in 2016 from the 37 Department of South Carolina Veterans of Foreign Wars. 38 39 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 40 Post Commander Margaret O.
