1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO DECLARE THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2006 12 “MENOPAUSE AWARENESS MONTH” IN RECOGNIZING 13 ITS EFFECTS ON THE HEALTH OF SOUTH CAROLINA 14 WOMEN. 15 16 Whereas, menopause affected 520,142 South Carolina women in 17 2005 and affected fifty million women nationwide; and 18 19 Whereas, health risks of menopause are serious. If not treated by a 20 trained physician or nurse practitioner, women are at a high risk of 21 suffering from osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease because of 22 estrogen depletion; and 23 24 Whereas, over 530,000 women die every year from complications 25 of osteoporosis, and it is predicted that these numbers could reach 26 staggering proportions with the aging of the Baby Boom 27 generation; and 28 29 Whereas, the American Menopause Foundation, Inc., is a national 30 not-for-profit organization of women, families, corporations, and 31 health care professionals committed to research, education, public 32 awareness, and advocacy for all women; and 33 34 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly stands committed 35 to the preservation of the health of all South Carolina women, be 36 they our neighbors, friends, wives, or daughters, and seeks to share 37 awareness of menopause so that the daughters of South Carolina 38 may remain healthy and strong. Now, therefore, 39 40 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 41 concurring: 42
1 [4549] 1 1 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 2 Carolina, by this resolution, declare the month of September 2006 3 “Menopause Awareness Month” in recognizing its effects on the 4 health of South Carolina women. 5 6 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 7 the American Menopause Foundation, Inc., in New York, New 8 York. 9 ----XX---- 10
