Year 4 Science Animals Including Humans – Block 4AH – Excuse me, are these your teeth? Session 6: Did you know….? Science curriculum i. describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans area: Animals ii. identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions iii. construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey Including Humans Working i. reporting on findings from enquiries, including oral and written explanations, displays or presentations Scientifically (LKS2) of results and conclusions Teaching Objectives  To explain to others what they know about human teeth and the digestive system. Other Curriculum English areas i) To discuss what they are learning and to develop their wider skills in spoken language. ii) To use language in a greater variety of situations, for a variety of audiences and purposes, including through drama, formal presentations and debate. Computing i) select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that can accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information. Teaching Objectives  To create a PowerPoint presentation and demonstrate their understanding of the importance of healthy teeth in a school assembly. Key Vocabulary teeth, molars, canine, incisors, digestion, stomach, oesophagus, large intestine, small intestine, faeces, present, display, explain, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, predator, prey Resources Weblinks Access to PowerPoint, https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Create-your-first-PowerPoint-2010-presentation- independent prompt sheet. 50732ad4-49b3-44c1-9b4d-fa5e73eb47d1 - Guide to creating a PowerPoint. Whole Class: This session should take place in the computer suite or have laptops available for each pair of children Explain that they have covered all the science objectives for this block and that this session will be their chance to show off all that they know. Ask them to recount some of the things they have learnt over the last few sessions. Point out the science display and allow them to look back through their work. Keep assessing their understanding of the science objectives throughout. Explain that they will be taking an assembly on healthy teeth and our digestive system for the rest of the school as an opportunity to show all that they know. One part of their assembly will be a PowerPoint presentation. Have they used this before? Demonstrate opening PowerPoint and selecting ‘blank presentation’. With their partner (mixed ability if possible), chn copy your steps as you do them so that you are all creating the same page at the same time. Take them through the creation of a title slide and make sure all the computing techniques you want them to use are included in your introduction: text box, image from the Internet, changing the background, adding animations for the different boxes to appear - (information about using PowerPoint can be found on the Microsoft website). Display the independent task prompt sheet (session resource) and explain what you would like them to do. Activity In the same pairs, chn create the next pages of a PowerPoint about healthy teeth using the prompt from the session resource. Move between groups assessing understanding of both computing and science parts of the task. Remind them to look back through their work and to look at the class display. Encourage them to also try to add the final digestive system slide. Whole Class This part will take some time and practice and will be greatly enhanced if combined with a group of English writing sessions. If no time available, simply use a combination of their PowerPoints and choose some chn to present each slide during the assembly. Chn should show their PowerPoints to other groups – move between the groups as they do this and assess their understanding and look for interesting PowerPoints. Remind them that they will be leading a whole school assembly and that they now need to plan what should be included in it. Choose different parts of different PowerPoints and create a single one. Remind them of the 1st session with the Healthy Teeth Expert. Choose 2 or 3 ‘experts’ who are confident enough to take on the role and have shown a clear understanding of the objectives. They will be leading the assembly. Take ideas from the rest of the class about how they can make it an interesting presentation. Adding role-play perhaps? Can they include their teeth shapes from Session 3? Can they include the audience somehow? As much as possible, allow the chn to plan the presentation. They could begin by jotting down what makes a good presentation – interesting, funny, not too long, learn something. Plenary The whole class gives an assembly about Healthy Teeth and our Digestive System to the rest of the school. Use as a final assessment and celebrate their success. Outcomes Children will  Plan and perform a ‘Healthy Teeth and our Digestive System’ assembly for the school  Include scientific language when taking on the role of a dental expert  Explain why teeth are an important part of our digestive system and demonstrate an understanding of the rest of the digestive system  Explore PowerPoint and try to identify how to change the slide transitions, background design and include images, text boxes and hyperlinks
