COCKINGTON WOODLAND BURIAL FACTSHEET
What is green about this type of burial? The Cockington Woodland Burial site is located within Conqueror Wood, an18 acre woodland on the Cockington estate with outstanding views over all of Torbay. The woodland and graveyard provides a good habitat for wildlife, particularly the rare Cirl bunting. For each burial, a tree will be planted nearby during the planting season (winter months). The trees will not be marked in any way.
Do we own the plot? Buying a burial plot does not give you any legal ownership of or right to the land.
What about reserving a plot for future use? Reserving a burial plot grants an exclusive right of burial for 40 years, after which the rights of burial cease and return to Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust. Burial rights can be extended after 40 years. Internment fee and memorial fees are paid at the time of burial. You will need to let us know if you change address, as if we cannot contact you after 40 years, your plot may be offered to another family.
Can I do what I want with the grave? The Woodland Burial site is a natural site and we do not allow any memorial items to be placed on the site, including flowers, plants, mementoes, glass or vases.
How will the site be looked after? Although there is a path through Conqueror Wood to the Woodland Burial Site for vehicular access for hearses, there will be no paths to individual graves. The Ground at the site is uneven and the grass will be allowed to grow long to encourage wild birds and insects.
How are the graves marked? Each grave will be marked with a small engraved granite tablet, set into the ground, alongside the grave. The tablets will all be of the same design, ordered by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust. The Trust will keep a Burial Ground Register.
What about double graves? Because the graves are marked, one or two bodies can be buried on the same plot. If you would like a double plot, this needs to be booked prior to the first burial. The burials take place one of top of each other, rather than side by side. We will plant a tree in the woodland for each burial.
What about ashes? There will be space at the site for the burial of ashes. Ashes can be buried in a biodegradable casket or direct into the ground. Plaques will mark the spot and a tree will also be planted in the woodland.
What if I decide that I do not want my plot? The cost of reserving the plot is non-refundable. If you decide within 14 days of booking that you do not want your plot, then you can cancel and receive a full refund of the money paid.
Can we choose exactly where on the site the grave should be? No, each burial will take place in the next available space in the woodland. Double plots can be bought in advance, but we cannot undertake to bury family members in single plots together in the woodland.
TCCT October 2014 Would we need a cardboard coffin? Bodies must be wrapped in ecologically-approved biodegradable wrappings, no hardwoods, MDF or plastic – cardboard, recycled wood, willow or bamboo is readily available from local undertakers. Body bags or shrouds can also be used, although materials must be biodegradable. Handles on coffins should be wooden or rope, no plastic. Bodies should not be embalmed.
How can we minimize our environmental impact? Contact Dial a Bus on 01803 690220 for details of minibus travel to the Cockington Woodland Burial Site. Cycle racks are due to be installed shortly. If you want to be really green, you could consider a donation to the Trust to offset the carbon emissions produced by your car journey.
Can we bring our vicar? Religious ceremonies can take place at the graveside, although the ground is not consecrated.
Is there enough parking? A hearse can come on site and there is enough parking in the existing car park for most funeral parties. For larger groups we can arrange parking on an adjacent site, but need prior notice.
Do we need to use a Funeral Director? Not necessarily, although you may find it easier. If you do not, you would need to supply your own webbing, supports and bearers. We do not supply trestles or any other equipment.
What facilities are there on the site? There are no toilet or refreshment facilities at the Cockington Woodland Burial site.
Can I help dig the grave? We only allow our nominated grave digger to dig graves at the Woodland Burial Site, but families can help under the supervision of the Trust’s gravedigger.
What about the stone tablet? The plaques are made of granite, engraved with your inscription. The lettering is not filled in with colour. Inscriptions can be up to 8 lines of text maximum to include the name of the deceased, with a maximum of 20 characters per line. There is only one tablet per plot, so if you are ordering a double plot, the wording for the first inscription needs to be short enough to allow room for a later inscription.
How do we arrange for a Woodland Burial? To book a burial, contact Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust on 01803 520022 or visit our website at www.countryside-trust.org.uk to download a Woodland Burial Application Form for immediate use or an Application Form to Reserve a Woodland Burial Plot for future use.
To book a burial plot for immediate use, you need to complete the Woodland Burial Application Form and return this to us by hand, recorded delivery or fax, at least three working days before your funeral. The Trust office is open during working hours. You will need to have received our confirmation before you publicize your burial arrangements.
TCCT October 2014 Before we can allow a burial, we need to have received the Registrar’s Green Burial Form. Please ensure that this is delivered to Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust’s office at Occombe Farm, Preston Down Road, Paignton, TQ3 1RN during working hours or handed to a member of Trust staff or their representative at the Woodland Burial Site immediately prior to the Burial.
