WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Mary Ellen Bruno on January 28, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Mary Ellen was the beloved wife of the late Anthony P. Bruno; and

WHEREAS: Mary Ellen’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her sons Anthony P. and Robert J. Bruno; her daughters-in-law Marilyn and Vivian Bruno; her seven grandchildren; and her one great-granddaughter; and

WHEREAS: Mary Ellen will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

VICE MAYOR MAHER COUNCILLOR BORN COUNCILLOR BRAUDE COUNCILLOR DAVIS COUNCILLOR DECKER MAYOR GALLUCCIO COUNCILLOR REEVES COUNCILLOR SULLIVAN COUNCILLOR TOOMEY

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the City Council that a very special Cantabrigian will celebrate a very special anniversary on Tuesday, February 6, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Theodora "Teddy" Arvanites began with Cambridgeport Bank on June 11, 1951 as a teller in the Central Square Branch, and she was there for thirty-five years working her way from the teller position to Vice President, Branch Manager. During these years, Teddy became a familiar face to Cambridgeport Bank's customers and the Cambridge community as a whole. Her strong ties in the Cambridge community led to her promotion to the position of Vice President, Community and Corporate Relations, a position she has held now for fifteen years; and

WHEREAS: Teddy excels in her current position of Vice President , Director of Community Relations; her title truly should be "Ambassador;" and

WHEREAS: Teddy is a member or on the board of nearly twenty community organizations in Cambridge and surrounding communities, including: CASPAR, Inc. (Cambridge and Somerville Program for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Rehabilitation), Cambridge Family YMCA, The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Training Innovations, Inc. and the Central Square Business Association; and

WHEREAS: Teddy has been the "brain" and the "brawn" behind many of Cambridge's most successful charity events; and

WHEREAS: In recognition of her efforts, Teddy has been the recipient of numerous awards, of particular note: Tribute To Women Award presented by the Cambridge YWCA in 1992, Dow-Winslow Distinguished Service Award presented by the Cambridge Rotary Club in 1994, Margot P. Kosberg Award presented by the City of Cambridge in 2000 and the Grand Mentor Award presented by Training Innovations, Inc. in 2000; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the Cambridge City Council go on record congratulating Teddy Arvanites on the occasion of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of her employment at the Cambridgeport Bank on February 6, 2001; and be it further

RESOLVED: That in appreciation of her invaluable contribution to the Cambridge community, the City Council does hereby declare Monday, June 11, 2001 "Teddy Arvanites Day" in Cambridge; and be it further

WHEREAS: Francis was a member of the Town of Norwell Advisory Board and Personnel Board member; and

WHEREAS: Francis was a past Chairman of Boston Telephone Workers Credit Union; and

WHEREAS: Francis’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his wife Dianne (Brennan) Sylvester; his siblings Clare S. Buckley, Mary Ann Tremblay and Charles McGuire; and William Slack Sylvester and Melissa Slack Sylvester; and

WHEREAS: On October 2, 1969 Doris was hired as a two hour aide at the School Department where she worked in the cafeterias throughout the school system; and

WHEREAS: On September 3, 1974 Doris transferred to the War Memorial as a six hour instructional aide; and

WHEREAS: In 1984 Doris was assigned as a locker room attendant at the War Memorial; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Beatrice Levy Davis was born eighty years ago on Valentine's Day in Coney Island, New York and the daughter of Mary Schiller and Harry Levy; and

WHEREAS: Beatrice grew up in Dorchester and attended Jeremiah E. Burke High School; and

WHEREAS: After marrying Ralph Davis, Beatrice became the mother of three children - Mary Martha, Michael and Henrietta; and

WHEREAS: Beatrice made her family proud by earning her Bachelor's degree at Bentley College at the age of seventy-two; and

WHEREAS: Beatrice is now the grandmother of seven accomplished and becoming accomplished young men and one young woman - Gregory, Adam, Daniel, Sam, Bethany, Aaron and Benjamin; and

WHEREAS: Beatrice is known for her sharp wit, strong opinions and raucous sense of humor; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: On February 15, 2001 at 6:30 PM a public forum will be held at the Cambridge Senior Center, First Floor Auditorium; and

WHEREAS: This will be a kick-off of Consumer Council Week with a “To Be A Smart Consumer” program featuring representatives from the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles; and

WHEREAS: This program will include a primer on smart consumer practices during automobile transactions; and

WHEREAS: The center point of the event is the public launching of CAR SMART 2001; a comprehensive guide including everything a consumer might need to know about automobile transactions; purchasing, leasing and repairing; and

WHEREAS: The CAR SMART 2001 booklet was developed by the Massachusetts Consumers’ Coalition, the state-wide consumer organization under the leadership of its chairman, Paul Schlaver, Executive Director of the Cambridge Consumers’ Council; and

WHEREAS: Three panelists will offer consumer advice and information relevant to their expertise and field questions. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office and AAA of Southern New England will be represented; and

WHEREAS: The booklet will be distributed free to the general public by consumer agencies and others throughout the Commonwealth. In Cambridge, copies will be available through the Consumers’ Council office at 831 Massachusetts Avenue, and copies will soon be on reserve at all Cambridge Library branches; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council thank all who participated for their time and effort in this great publication that will provide important information to the Cambridge residents and residents throughout the Commonwealth about automobile transactions; and be it further RESOLVED: That this City Council thank Paul Schlaver, Executive Director of the Cambridge Consumers’ Council for his leadership in this important effort; and be it further
