2012 IN PROFILE

CULTURAL

ALLIED ARTS - LITERARY In Allied Arts literary, we fielded a number of boys and it was well supported. Our results were as follows: Honours - 2 1st Grade Plus - 3 1st Grade - 6 2nd Grade Plus - 9 2nd Grade - 9 3rd Grade Plus - 9 3rd Grade - 14

ALLIED ARTS – VISUAL The boys really enjoyed the topics for the visual Allied Arts Festival this year , as can be seen by the results they managed to achieve. All the Grade 3 classes got together and entered a three dimensional work called “Enchanted Forest” which won them a place in the National prize for that age group. The boys were awarded 8 Honours, 29 1st Grades, 27 2nd Grades and 4 3rd Grades.

MUSIC & PLAYS 1st term – The school choir got a 1st award in the Eisteddfod. 2nd term – School Play “Button Box” involved almost all our classes from Gr 3 – 7. It was a wonderful play and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We had a visit by International Vocal Quartet and Singers of United Lands. Their aim is to develop international and cultural relationships through vocal music from around the world. 3rd term – Combined Choir for Junior Schools carol concert. 12 schools participated and 25 boys took part. Infants Play Grades 1 – 2. Loads of practice went into this play and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

LIBRARY 2012 has been a huge rewarding year in the library. We were fortunate to have a great team of library monitors. For World Book Day this year we had fun as a school with a Read-A-Thon. Throughout the day we made sure we had a boy or group of boys reading something. The Collage IB Students came over and read to the infant classes so that they could also take part in the World Book Day and by all accounts everyone had great fun. We are looking forward to the new, large library being opened in 2013.

PUBLIC SPEAKING - INTER-SCHOOL & INTER-HOUSE Boys in Grade 4-7 took part in public speaking this year. Juniors selected for the interhouse were Murray Dorward, Petrus Erasmus, Mandla Msipa, Archie Strong and Matthew Welch. Senior selection were Nicholas Balfour, Mudiwa Bosha, Douglas Dorward, Patrick Plunket and Ryan Sylvester. Jerome won the Richard Heap Trophy with Ambrose being runner-up. In the junior section Archie Strong was awarded the Eliezer Cup with Murray Dorward being runner-up. In the senior section Douglas Dorward won the Elliot Cup with Ryan Sylvester being an outstanding runner-up. At interschools level both our seniors and juniors did extremely well with our juniors coming 4th and seniors coming 5th and we came 4th overall.

CLUBS Many clubs were available and catered for a wide range of tastes. LEADERSHIP CAMP - GRADE 6 76 boys participated at the Tree of Life Camp – Ruwa. It was a great development and team building exercise.

OUTREACH Donations in cash made to Kidzcan and Perekedza Orphanage . We made collections for SPCA. We helped the needy with Christmas presents and fillings for crackers on behalf of Miracle Missions to give orphaned children a lovely Christmas. The Grade 7’s visited Chiedza , Chinyaradzo and Emerald Hill Children’s Homes to donate books, toys, clothes and various other items. Gr 4N donated to the Foundation Project and also sold DVD’s for the Save Valley Rhino Conservancy. Books were donated to Hallingbury School.

CHESS TEAMS This year we competed in the B League. Our team was made up of a variety of age groups ranging from Gr 3 – Gr 7. Our young boys have proven to be fast, ambitious learners. We are confident in their consistent progression in this sport. If the junior boys keep their efforts up next year, we are likely to be upgraded to the A league and achieve remarkable results. We played 8 matches, won 6 and lost 2.

SPORT CROSS COUNTRY We had yet another brilliant cross country season. The season opened with the Gateway meeting in which we came first out of 10 schools for the 10th year in a row, with Cameron Butler setting a new record for the U13 boys. The big meeting was Lilfordia 3 Woods in which we came 1st out of 21 schools. Cameron Butler won the senior boys age group out of 195 athletes. We have won this meet for the 8th year in succession. Our B team came 2nd against 1st teams of other schools at the Sharon meet. The season came to an end by winning the Ruzawi meeting. At Inter-house level Ambrose 1st, Gregory 2nd, Jerome 3rd.

ATHLETICS The 2012 athletics season was a very successful one. In a very long time we won the prestigious Division 1 Athletics meeting that we hosted. Our athletes did us proud too in winning the Inter-schools friendly meeting that we also hosted. A special mention should be made of our relay teams who managed to get a place in all their races. In the Inter-house Athletics sports day, Ambrose came 1st, Jerome 2nd and Gregory 3rd.

SWIMMING We attended the following galas: Flippers, Pisces, Ruzawi, Mashonaland Inter- Schools, all of which we won. In the Inter-schools we won for a record 18th consecutive time. The following boys did well in their various clubs winning medals in Mashonaland galas : Andrew Robinson, Callum Davis, Liam Davis, Lance Annandale, Mapalo Musaba, Cole Onorati, Gary Wright-Goodale and Douglas Dorward. Liam Davis was selected to represent Zimbabwe in Maputo in April. He broke the 100m Breastroke record in the Maputo Tour. He also did extremely well in the Level 2 Regional Age Group Championship in South Africa. In the Ruzawi Gala Liam Davis broke the record for U13 Individual Medley and Gary Wright-Goodale broke the U9 Backstroke record.

SQUASH In the Inter-provincial Squash the following boys were selected for the Zim teams : Jason Franklin, Kyle Tenkrooden and Miguel Roscoe. DUATHLON/ TRIATHLON St John’s Squad of approximately 30 boys were very well represented. After an enjoyable year of Duathlon we managed to get a 2nd place in the Boys Section of the Duathlon series. Captain Ryan Crawford has improved tremendously.

RUGBY Fielded 7 Senior Rugby teams. 4 Colts teams. 2 Grade 4 teams. 2 Grade 3 teams.

Seniors played 52 matches. Won 44 Lost 3 Drew 5

Colts played 42 matches. Won 39 Lost 2 Drew 1

Grade 4 Rugby played 7 matches Won 5 Drew 1 Lost 1

Grade 3A Rugby played 11 matches Won 8 Lost 3

At senior level we won the St John’s Super 8 Festival and the Ruzawi 7 aside Festival. We won all our matches at Gateway Festival and we also won all matches at Springvale Festival played at Peterhouse.

At Colts(A) level we won all our games at the Gateway Coaches Festival. We won all matches at the Springvale Festival, with Joshua Ford voted the best three quarter. We won the Hellenic Casticas Day/Night Festival for the first time and the team had an unbeaten season.

We lost to Ruzawi in the final at the Ruzawi Grade 3 Festival. The Grade 3 team was second runners up at the Gateway Festival.

Unbeaten sides :- 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 6th teams, Colts A and B, Gr 4A & B, Gr 3B.

SOCCER Fielded 2 Senior teams, 2 Colts teams, 6 Grade 3 teams.

Seniors played 35 matches Won 25 Lost 4 Drew 6

Colts played 20 matches Won 16 Lost 1 Drew 3

Grade 3 played 20 matches Won 13 Lost 2 Drew 5

The following teams were unbeaten :- 1st, Colts A, Colts B, Grade 3A, B and C.

1st Soccer won the Hellenic Day/Night 5 A-side Tournament. HOCKEY Fielded 4 senior teams, 4 Colts teams.

Seniors: Played 35 matches Won 31 Lost 3 Drew 2

Colts: Played 24 matches Won 19 Lost 3 Drew 2

The following boys made it into the Harare A team – C. Butler; G. Dollar; M. Chareka (C). Harare B team – H. James (C); E. Van Rooyen; D. Pike; P. Mwamuka.

Unbeaten teams – 2nd team and Colts B.

CRICKET Fielded 7 senior teams, 4 Colts teams, 2 Grade 4 teams.

Seniors: Played 53 matches. Won 44 Drew 4 Lost 5

Colts: Played 52 matches Won 41 Drew 2 Lost 9

Grade 4s : Played 12 matches Won 8 Lost 4

In the first term, our 1st Team toured to South Africa v Woodridge Prep we won V Beluer Prep we drew, V Waterkloof we lost. It was a very successful tour.

In the first term, the 1st team were losing finalists in the Falcon Festival as well as in the Lilfordia Day/Night Festival. Colts A cricket team had an unbeaten season in the first term and lost only one match against Ruzawi in 3rd term. They won the Barwick Festival and were losing finalist in the Hellenic Festival. Unbeaten teams - 4th and 7th teams

The following boys were selected to represent Mashonaland Eagles U13 Franchise Team from 7 – 9th December 2012 :- Ezra Van Rooyen, Hadley James, Gregory Dollar, Mufaro Chareka. The following boys missed the trials. Due to the swimming gala, they will be assessed at Harare Sports Club :- Daniel Aucamp, Cameron Butler, Broc Meyer.

TENNIS We fielded three teams, A, B and C. Our boys did extremely well. A team won all their matches without dropping a set. B team only lost two matches, both to A teams, one of which was ours! C team lost two, also to A teams.

VOLLEYBALL Our Volleyball teams were very strong this year. We fielded A and B teams. A team played 5 league matches and won all of them. The B team played 5, won 4 and lost 1. We took part in the Shyashi View Tournament. A team played 4 matches and won all of them. The B’s played 3 and won all of them.

MOTOR CROSS  Nick Freemantle came 3rd in the Southern African Championships 50cc – round 2 held at Donnybrook.  Mudiwa Chigumba was 2nd overall in the 50cc class at the All Africa Championships in Uganda. He was also 2nd overall in the 50cc class and 65cc class of the Southern African Challenge in Botswana.  Ryan Moore was place 8th in motor cross in the Capricorn Race Club in Polokwane (SA).  Daiyaan Manuel took 1st place in the first heat and 2nd place in the second heat. He was place 2nd overall in the 50cc category.

KARTING  Cole Onorati won the Zimbabwe Junior Max Championship which involves races in Harare and Bulawayo. He is also the youngest driver to achieve this being two years younger than the official qualification age. He was allowed to move up into a bigger class.  Struan Nel won the Junior Rock Zimbabwe National Championship.

BMX  These boys participated in the Inter-provincials held in Bulawayo and achieved the following:- Daniel Johnson 1st in U9 Ethan Ellse 2nd in U 10 Daniel Van Rooyen 2nd in U11 Ryan Machingauta 2nd in U13  The following boys went to the World Championships in Birmingham, Uk :- B. Mason; E. Ellse; G. Du Plooy; L. Doran; J. Ellse; R. Machingauta; D. Van Rooyen and J. Mitchell.  Results of some of our boys in World BMX :- Jarod Ellse 8th in U11 cruiser men. Jacob Mitchell 6th in 7 yrs old age group Brendan Mason 6th in 10 yrs old age group.  Ben Oberholzer won 2 gold and got 1st place in 7 yr old in Africa Challenge while Ryan Machingauta got a 3rd place and Brendan Mason won all his races.  Brendan Mason was short listed for the Answer Awards Junior Sportsman of the year for BMX.

HORSE RIDING  Kirk and Jack Edwards did well in horse riding this year. Some of Kirk’s awards in the Horse Society of Zimbabwe were: Valentine meet in February: 1st - 70cm Welcome class 2nd - 80cm Welcome class 4th - 80cm Ungraded class. He also got a 1st in the Three Phase event at Arlington Farm, riding “Zahara Ramadam”.  James Annesley participated in the Dressage at the Arlington Newcomers’ Event, riding on “Bug”.  Oscar Bredenkamp attained 2nd place in the U10 group at Chapungu Championship – Pony Riders Preliminary.

SAILING SCHOOL  Joshua Ford achieved a 1st place in the U10 group and won the Tadpole Shield. He was also 1st in the Junior Regatta and won the Spratt Trophy.

DANCE SPORT  The following boys took part in the Inter-School’s Dance Sport competition held at Hellenic School :- S. Atwell; J. Martell; O. Dixon; T. Harvey; A. Cochrane. St John’s came 2nd.  In ZADSA Winter Warmer Competition : T. Harvey and Partner 1st in Juvenile Beginner Ballroom. 2nd in Juvenile 1 Rhythm Foxtrot 3rd in Juvenile Introductory 1 Classical Sequence. S. Atwell and Partner 1st in Juvenile Pre-Bronze Latin 1st in Juvenile Introductory 2 Classical Sequence 1st in Juvenile Pre-Bronze ballroom.  In the Kick Start Competition : S. Atwell and Partner 1st in Juvenile Introductory 1 Classical 1st in Juvenile 2 Rhythm Foxtrot 1st in Juvenile Beginner Latin.

SHOOTING  In the Inter-Schools Shooting Rifle Range Competition : Joshua Ford 1st in the Tin Hat Target Shoot 3rd in Silhouettes  Daniel Scholtz 2nd in Midlands Championships at Rifle Range  At Cleveland Pistol Range .22 calibre open sight rifle at silhouettes – Darin Adams, Joshua Ford, Reon and Tyler Spagnuolo, Theo Detering represented St John’s Prep School.  In the Mashonaland Gunclub Shooting Competition : Steven McKinnon 3rd and a Bronze Medal shooting at 200 targets.  Steven McKinnon 1st Junior in Zambia Clay Pigeon Open Shooting Competition.

ART COMPETITIONS  St. John’s Prep scooped 1st prize in this tightly contested Chicken Inn Olympics competition. The winning portrait was done by Tony O’Riordan, T. Ajara, D. Van Rooyen, E. Burbidge, T. Kaseke, M. Dorward. Winner of the Best Creative Work was Angus Moon.  As part of the International Day of Peace on 21 September, the organ for National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration (ONHRI) held a National Schools Art Competition on Peace Building. The following boys qualified for National Prizes: Daniel Erasmus 3E Daniel Johnson 4N Other entrants Nigel Mutazu, Sean Pickworth and Arian Tarr also won some prize monies.  The Aloe, Cactus and Succulent Society of Zimbabwe ran a colouring competition with Ian Munro and Joshua Ford winning prizes.  The boys designed a logo for “Save Mana Pools” – their entries can be viewed on Facebook under “Save Mana”. The winner is yet to be announced.  We are about to select 3 paintings to go forward to the United Nations so that they may be chosen to take part in an International Childrens Art Exhibition in Japan. The theme is Peace and Unity and should depict Zimbabwean Culture.
