Duke Energy Assistantship ~ North Carolina State University’s MBA Program

Introduction

The Duke Energy Graduate Assistantship is offered every fall to a full-time MBA student at the College of Management at North Carolina State University. The assistantship was conceived in 2004 to attract talented individuals to Duke Energy and to familiarize MBA students with careers in the field of Supply Chain Management (SCM). Corporate assistantships such as this one provide a financial incentive for talented individuals to consider careers with Duke Energy and serve to demonstrate the importance of supply chain management issues within the corporate community.

This document will outline the benefits, selection criteria and process, and key dates and contact information associated with the assistantship.

Description of Assistantship

The Duke Energy Graduate Assistant will receive all of the benefits associated with a traditional graduate assistantship in the MBA Program: full tuition coverage, health insurance, and a stipend of $6,000 for nine months (two semesters). The student is responsible for approximately $632 per semester in student fees and will work no more than eighteen hours per week.

The Duke Energy Assistantship will differ from the standard assistantship in three ways:

1. The centerpiece of this assistantship will be a mentoring relationship with one or more Supply Chain Executives at Duke Energy. The student will be assigned one executive mentor per semester from Duke Energy’s leadership team, who will be able to coach and provide guidance to the student through their assistantship tenure. The mentor will be assigned at the beginning of the semester, and an introductory meeting will be held at Duke Energy Headquarters in Charlotte, NC for the graduate assistant to meet members of the Duke Energy team. 2. Instead of work supporting a professor, the recipient will work directly with Duke Energy professionals to identify some key areas in SCM business functions and develop position papers and recommendations based upon research. The graduate assistant will work with Duke Energy liaisons and the Supply Chain Resource Consortium staff to select and outline the research monographs. These research projects will be manageable in conjunction with student studies and consistent with the traditional assistantship duties and work expectations. (Note that several on-site meetings will take place at Duke Energy Headquarters in Charlotte, NC, but most of the work can and will occur remotely.) 3. There will be an additional stipend amount of $2000 per semester which puts the total nine month stipend at $10,000.
