LAG3203 German for Academic Purposes COURSE OUTLINE

Module Objectives This module is specially designed for students who are interested in studying in a German-speaking country. It will prepare them for essential communicative situations and interactions in German-speaking university environment. Students will be taught to comprehend longer listening and reading texts on more complex topics of academic interest as well as on aspects of German culture, society and life.

Module Structure The five hours weekly for the module will be divided into: 2 Lectures (2 hrs each) and 1 Tutorial (1 hr) There will be twelve weeks of lectures. Attendance is compulsory for both lectures and tutorials.

Lectures During the lectures, the students will be introduced to topics of study as well as new grammatical aspects. The emphasis will be on developing reading, writing and listening skills as well as on acquiring and practising new linguistic structures. The lessons will be based mostly materials prepared by the German language lecturers at the CLS (some of which is accessible in e-daf, in the Audio-Video Room under the title "Auf Austausch in Deutschland"; URL: http://courseware.nus.edu.sg/e-daf) and partly on the textbook "Eurolingua Deutsch 2".

Tutorials The tutorials will support the lectures in reinforcing the students’ grasp of the new topics, vocabulary and linguistic structures learnt. The lessons will be based on the textbook "Eurolingua Deutsch 2" and additional materials prepared by the tutors and lecturers.

Assessment The assessment is based entirely on students' coursework (100% CA). There is no examination for this module. Assessment will be based on the students’ written work (compositions, essays, project etc.), oral speaking abilities, performance in periodic tests as well as class participation.
