1. URL for a new site to showcase our Archeology Lab
Discussed approving the URL for the large high profile research project taking place; they want their own website with a URL such as www.unf.edu/archlab or something similar that is easy to remember and accessible. An option could be using a key word for a quicker search.
What do they want to build (will it include a database or just copy information) and should it be in CMS. IPC can’t approve the URL until it is known what the site is for and what they plan on putting into the site. Marianne needs to speak with Keith to determine what they are trying to achieve. If it is a website they want it - who will build it? If this is more of a project then ITS will need to spec it and get the appropriate resources involved.
2. Discussion on support for faculty research projects like the Archlab and Sharks
We need to explore and support them – whether it’s through CIRT, CMS, etc. We need to know upfront what they expect to accomplish. Analyze the individual projects and determine what is required.

I think we have precedent now for setting up these special sites so I think the justification below might suffice to get a URL but not that one you suggested because the URL must have UNF come first. I am fairly certain that you will need to consider a URL more in line with what we have approved in the past, such as www.unf.edu/archlab. If I understand the request for the URL correctly, this doesn’t seem like it would be a deal breaker. I am imagining you want something like the Shark project in Bio: http://www.unf.edu/sharks/. Let me know if what I proposed as a URL is not acceptable and we can talk further.

Hi Marianne, Michael and I met with Buzz and Keith yesterday to discuss their need for a website for the Archaeology Lab. As you can see below, they have a number of projects currently running for which there is information of public interest. Of particular interest is the current effort to locate Fort Caroline, which will likely be particularly high profile in the coming year as we approach the 450th anniversary of the establishment of Fort Caroline by the French will take place in 2014. (And of course when they locate it!) They anticipate high public interest and requests for information and anticipate a need to have an easily accessible URL for the site, such as http://archlab.unf.edu . I am sure they can articulate the need better than I if more information is needed, as they certainly convinced me yesterday.
There are a couple of questions that I thought should start with you as the AA IPC rep: What is the process for securing a custom UNF URL? How should we engage the CMS group in ITS to develop templates for a site what will met their needs, similar to the analysis done for each department during migration? Thanks, Deb

The UNF Archaeology Lab was awarded a 2013 State of Florida Historic Preservation Grant for the project entitled “A French Colony Lost: The Search for La Caroline” (which runs from July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013). This project includes an archaeological study to locate evidence of the lost French colony of La Caroline (Fort Caroline), which was established in 1564 and abandoned in 1565. At present, the exact location of the original fort is unknown, but European documents provide clues to a general area for the fort’s placement along the south side of the St. Johns River. The planned archaeological survey will focus on both federal (National Park Service - NPS) and private lands between northern Mill Cove and Greenfield Creek in Jacksonville (Duval County).
