Use your Macmillan School Atlas, page 18, to help you understand the following geographic land and water terms.
1. Island – a body of land completely surrounded by water
2. Isthmus – a narrow body of land connecting two larger pieces of land and having water on either side.
3. Peninsula – a piece of land almost surrounded by water, or extending far out into the water.
4. Cape –a point of land extending into the water
5. River – a large natural stream of water flowing downward from the highlands into a large body of water.
6. Source of a river – the location where the river begins, the source is usually high in the hills or mountains
7. Mouth of a river – the area of water where it empties into another larger body of water
8. Downstream – the direction of flow of a river from its source to the large body of water into which it empties
9. Upstream – the direction taken when you try to go against the natural flow of a river
10.Delta – the area of land, formed by silt and sand, which collects at the mouth of a river
11.Harbour – a sheltered body of water used by ships for protection
12.Bay/Gulf – a wide arm of the ocean or sea extending into the land
13.Strait – a narrow channel of water connecting two larger bodies of water
14.Sea or Ocean – a large body of salt water
15.Lake – a large body of usually fresh water surrounded by land
16.Mountains – an area of very high and rugged land. The older mountain ranges have been worn away over millions of years, therefore, the younger a range the higher its peaks.
