Two Ways of Making Decisions In recent classes we have been sorting out the differences between authoritarian and democratic systems of government. To better understand these terms:

1. Take a lined piece of paper and write “The Authoritarian Way” on the top and “The Democratic Way” half way down

2. Read pages 5 -7 and take jot form notes about these two ways of governing – Authoritarianism and Democracy.

3. You are to create 2 separate comic strips, illustrating the key differences between authoritarian and democratic systems of governing. Specifically, you must illustrate the following 3 concepts for each style of government in your comics: AUTHORITARIAN DEMOCRATIC ~ leaders are usually self-appointed ~ leaders are elected

~ leaders cannot usually be replaced, ~ leaders’ term in office is limited, since unless they die or are overthrown elections must be held at regular intervals

~ citizens can question and speak out ~ citizens cannot question or speak out against leaders’ actions against leaders’ actions

4. On two separate sheets of paper, create comics using 3 - 4 frames per style of government [6 - 8 in total] and each frame should illustrate one of the concepts listed in the above chart – taken from page 6 of the textbook.

5. Be sure to be neat, use colour, write short blurbs explaining each concept.
