Tournament Schedule:

The BMGC Match Play Tournament will begin on May 1, 2014. All matches must be completed by the deadline as follows: Round Begins Ends o Jerome Travers Round of 64: May 1 May 21

o Chick Evans Round of 32: May 22 June 11

o Francis Ouimet Round of 16: June 12 July 2

o Jack Nicklaus Round of 8: July 3 July 23

o Tiger Woods Round of 4: July 24 August 13 o BMGC Championship Round: August 14 Sept 3

Player Responsibilities:

 You are responsible for setting up your own tee times for your match. Each match must be completed by the date noted in the individual flight pairings. Please email the Match Play Coordinator (Mark Maioli - [email protected]) with your match date when tee times are agreed upon.  Once the match is completed, the winner must send an email with the results to the Match Play Coordinator ([email protected]). Please include the course, tee boxes played, final match score. . DO NOT WRITE YOUR RESULTS ON THE BRACKETS POSTED AT THE BROADLANDS!!  A delayed match affects all subsequent matches. Therefore, extension of the match play schedule will not be permitted. All competitors have an equal chance of injury, urgent family business, travel, etc.  If a match is not completed by the scheduled date, a competitor can agree to forfeit the match. In the event the players cannot agree, the Match Play Coordinator will decide the outcome based on a coin toss. o The Home competitor (listed on top of the bracket) will be heads, the Visitor will be tails.  It is each players’ responsibility to know and play by the USGA Rules of Golf/Decisions for match play.

Handicaps:

 The most recent revision of your CGA handicap on the day of the match will be used to determine the number of strokes a player receives or gives.  Both players will mutually decide on the course to play for their match.  Both players must also mutually decide on the tees you will play from for your match. o Playing from different tees is permitted if agreed upon by both competitors (stroke adjustments detailed below)  Handicaps are to be adjusted for the course and tees you play. . Go to the USGA Course Handicap Calculator for a handy way to calculate your course handicap. . The local golf professional will be able to convert your index to the course handicap if needed. . There is also a free Golf Handicap Calculator app for Android & iPhone.  The higher handicap will receive the stroke differential on the lowest handicap holes. Ex. Joe is a 10, Jack is a 16 – Jack receives 6 strokes starting at the #1 handicap hole. o If you are playing Broadlands GC, strokes will be taken from handicap holes as determined by the BMGC o Mens’ Club score cards will be available at the pro shop  Per USGA handicapping rules, if competitors are playing from different tees an additional adjustment will be made to the course handicap of the player who is playing the higher rated tee box: o Since a USGA Course Rating reflects the probable scores of scratch golfers, the higher-rated course is more difficult. The player playing from the set of tees with the higher USGA Course Rating receives additional stroke(s) equal to the difference between each USGA Course Rating, with the resulting figure rounded off to the nearest whole number (.5 or more is rounded upward). (See Decision 3-5/1.) o Example 1: If men playing from the middle tees, with a men's USGA Course Rating of 70.3, compete against men playing from the back tees, with a men's USGA Course Rating of 72.6, the men playing from the back tees will add two strokes to their Course Handicap (72.6 - 70.3 = 2.3 rounded to 2). o Example 2: Per course ratings for Broadlands GC: Player on Black Tees vs. player on Gold tee = +3 strokes (73.5 - 70.5 = 3) Player on Black Tees vs. player on Gold/Blue tee = +5 strokes (73.5 - 68.7 = 4.8) Player on Black Tees vs. player on Blue tee = +6 strokes (73.5 - 67.2 = 6.3) Player on Black Tees vs. player on Blue/Silver tee = +9 strokes (73.5 - 64.9 = 8.6) Player on Gold Tees vs. player on Gold/Blue tee = +2 strokes (70.5 - 68.7 = 1.8) Player on Gold Tees vs. player on Blue tee = +3 strokes (70.5 - 67.2 = 3.3) Player on Gold Tees vs. player on Blue/Silver tee = +6 strokes (70.5 - 64.9 = 5.6) Player on Gold/Blue Tees vs. player on Blue tee = +2 strokes (68.7 - 67.2 = 1.5) Player on Gold/Blue Tees vs. player on Blue/Silver tee = +4 strokes (68.7 - 64.9 = 3.8) Rules for Match Play:

All play shall be in accordance with the USGA Rules of Golf/Decisions and the BMGC Local Rules (if played at The Broadlands). Match play decisions and penalties can differ from stroke play; it is each players’ responsibility to know and play by the rules of match play. It is recommended that at least one player in each match has a rule book to consult in case of disputes/questions. Rule books can be ordered from USGA.org (up to 2 books for free + about $3 shipping) or The USGA mobile app can be downloaded to your smartphone.

A match is won when one player is up more holes than there are holes left to play.

In the case of a tie:  Immediate sudden death play is recommended if the golf course will allow it. o The R&A recommends starting on hole 1, some courses may have to send you out on 10  If a player is unable to complete the sudden death match, the contestants can agree to schedule the sudden death playoff for another date as long as the match is completed by the deadline date.  Otherwise there will be a coin flip to determine the winner o The player on the top of the bracket is designated as heads and vice versa. o A third party should perform the coin toss.

Late for tee time: If a player is late for his tee time, there is a grace period of 5 minutes with no “loss-of-hole” penalty. If the player shows later than 5 minutes but less than 15 minutes late, there will be a loss of one hole penalty assessed. If a player does not call his opponent or the course to say he’ll be late, the “no-show” player forfeits the match after 15 minutes beyond the scheduled tee time.

The match must go at least 9 holes in order to be official in the case of bad weather or darkness; however, continuance or stoppage of play must be mutual and of good judgment. If play cannot be resumed within a mutually agreed upon time that day or scheduled for another date before the round deadline, the winner will be determined by whoever was leading after the last completed hole.

The below rules explanations are provided as a service to golfers to familiarize themselves with match play.

"Penalty for Breach of Rule" in match play is usually loss of the hole [2-6].

 The ‘away’ player (bottom of the draw) has the honors to begin the match. After both players have started play of the hole, the ball farther from the hole is played first. The side that wins a hole takes the honor at the next teeing ground. If an opposing player hits out of turn, the other player may require the opposing player to replay the shot in the proper order. [10-1c]

 In match play, you can concede your opponent’s putt at any time. All putts must be played until the golf ball is holed or the putt is conceded by the opposing player.

 A player may concede the match, a hole, or the next stroke (including putts). A concession may not be declined OR withdrawn [2-4]. If a hole is conceded, the player must post the most likely score he would have made on the hole.

 Once the match is won or lost, the match is over. Each player must record a score of net par* on each hole not played during the match for handicap purposes. o A *net par score is par plus handicap strokes for that hole. If players "play in" after the match is completed, the actual score on those holes is not recorded.  In case of doubt or dispute of the rules, a player may make a claim, but it must be done prior to any player making a stroke from the next teeing ground, or if the last hole, before all players leave the putting green. Claims not made in this manner cannot be considered. [2-5]

 If teeing off from outside the teeing ground, there is no stroke penalty, but your opponent can cancel your shot and require you to replay it. [11-4a]

 If your ball hits a fellow-competitor or his equipment, you have the option to replay the shot. [19-3]

 A player cannot consult with or obtain information from any other player (e.g., someone accompanying you during your match for example).

 A player may not touch his ball other than as permitted by the rules. o For instance, if your ball is lying such that you cannot readily identify it, you cannot just go to it and gently turn it to see your mark. The proper procedure is that you must inform your opponent of your intention, mark and lift the ball, identify it, and replace the ball without cleaning it -- provided you allow your opponent to observe the lifting and replacing. [12-2]

 You cannot lift (or even touch) another players ball without authority [18-3b]. This means that you cannot mark another player’s ball on the green without his permission.

 You cannot touch your ball on the putting surface to line it up unless it is properly marked. [18-3b].

 The player is obliged to inform his opponent “as soon as practicable” that he has incurred a penalty. If he gives wrong information to his opponent as to strokes taken he loses the hole. [9-2]
