Digital Story Telling Project – North Ayrshire 2017
Opportunity for a Creative Practitioner to work in partnership with a Library or Library Service Freelance, fixed term for 6 months from mid-March 2017 Fixed fee of £9,000 (for 2.5 days per week or equivalent)
Background The Digital Storyteller will work with a Scottish library in North Ayrshire to stimulate and deliver an innovative project by working with the local community to encourage and teach participants to create their own digital stories. Participants will have the option to share their stories on YouTube and/or within the library archives.
The project is based on the methodology developed by the Story Centre, an American organisation that supports individuals and organisations to use storytelling and participatory media for reflection, education, and social change. It helps create spaces for transforming lives and communities through listening to and sharing stories. More details are available at www.storycenter.org
Training and Support Scottish Book Trust (SBT) will support the practitioner and the project throughout the residency. The technology required to run the project is funded by SBT and following the 6- month residency, will remain within the library service for future training opportunities and community engagement in digital story creation. As part of the residency, a 2-day “train the trainer” workshop will also be delivered to other staff within the service to provide a legacy for digital story telling within the local community.
The Digital Storyteller will participate in an SBT induction course, as well as a “good practice” sharing session(s) with other partners and practitioners.
Key Skills & Experience An enthusiastic creative digital practitioner** with experience of working in community settings Excellent communication skills for involving and inspiring a wide range of members of the public The ability to motivate and engage a range of professionals to work in partnership for the delivery of shared goals Experienced and confident in project planning The ability to facilitate story creation by supporting participants to find their own voice and edit their own original stories Able to maintain high professional standards Competent in the use of digital story telling IT equipment and software packages
1 The ability to tailor learning and engagement approaches to match the needs of diverse partners and audiences The ability to train others in the digital storytelling approach, including both professionals and volunteers
This opportunity is open to creative digital practitioners currently resident in Scotland. Applications will be accepted from anywhere in Scotland, however, we will give priority to applicants who live within reasonable commuting distance of the host library.
**A creative digital practitioner is defined as anyone employed professionally in a chosen creative practice including:
Personal writing/ storytelling Making creative digital media Supporting learners by facilitating group work where participants create individual pieces of work
2 Application Process for Digital Storytellers
Stage 1: Thursday 12th January – Wednesday 8th February 2017 Prospective Digital Storytellers will be able to view the job requirements on Scottish Book Trust’s website Job adverts will be in the respective localities and further afield from 12th January until 8th February 207. Applications from creative practitioners should be sent directly to Scottish Book Trust
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: Wednesday 8th February 2017
Stage 2: Short listing will take place: 13/14th February 2017
Stage 3: Interviews:
Interviews will take place in North Ayrshire on 27th February 2017 (at Greenwood Conference Centre, Greenwood Gate, Dreghorn KA11 4GZ).
Stage 4: Successful candidates will be selected and allocated as per the best fit with the library/groups requiring support, in the area
Successful candidates and host libraries will be informed by Thursday 2nd March 2017.
Once all successful candidates have been confirmed and freelance employment contracts signed and returned, the final confirmation from the host library will be finalised by Monday 6th March
Stage 5: Residencies will begin in mid-March in North Ayrshire.
Appointment of Digital Storytellers may be conditional on securing clearance from Disclosure Scotland. o Ownership of the copyright in and to any material, created by the Digital Storyteller resulting from the residency shall vest solely in the Digital Storyteller, as appropriate; o Ownership of the copyright in and to any material, created by the participants on the workshops resulting from the residency shall vest solely with the said participants, as appropriate; o Saltcoats Library and Scottish Book Trust and Scottish Government will be able to use the material produced on any of their own print, online media channels and archive facilities to promote the work of the Digital Storytelling programme, or the roles of the partners, upon copyright holders’ signing a copyright release form for their work, stating they are happy for it to be used for these purposes only.
