Introductions were made and new attendees were welcomed. Suzanne summarized coalition activities since December 2012. Cancer mortality rates are 19% higher in the 29-county area of ENC than in the rest of the 71 counties. Coalition By-Laws were approved in February 2013. A manuscript summarizing the Agnes Scenario was published in the Journal of Community Health Nursing. Preliminary results from the organizational network analysis were presented.

USPSTF Updates on Colorectal Cancer Screening

Lecia Reardon, RN, DNP-candidate, Vidant Duplin Hospital, presented information from the recently released draft Research Statement from the US Preventive Services Task Force. A handout was provided. Community-based Oncology Education

Darla Liles, MD, reported that the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)/ Pfizer Community Oncology Education program awarded ECU a two year grant to promote education to patients, nurses, and physicians about aspects of blood cancer treatment and therapy in five rural regional hospitals in ENC. The nurse navigators will be included in some of the training and education.

Many expressed the benefits of the Road to Recovery program in eastern North Carolina and hope that ACS can reconvene the workgroup to place drivers and coordinators in all 29 counties.

1 Cervical Cancer Free North Carolina

Alexis Moore, UNC, discussed the Cervical Cancer Free NC Initiative. From slides presented, it was evident that cervical cancer burden is highest in north eastern North Carolina counties. She reported on a sub-regional workshop held in Fayetteville on March 7, 2014 where local stakeholders proposed strategies for improving screening access and HPV vaccination. Coalition attendees expressed interest in hosting a similar workshop in Rocky Mount and perhaps another location. More discussion about the workshop will be forthcoming. The goal of the workshop would be to conceptual ways to improve screening rates and HPV vaccination rates in counties with the highest burden.

Leo Jenkins Cancer Services Survivorship Activities

Holly Parrott Hill is the Cancer Survivorship Coordinator for ECU Brody School of Medicine. She reported on many activities for cancer survivors and their families. Cancer Survivors Day is Saturday, June 19, 2014 from 4pm-8pm (FREE) at the Five Points area of Greenville (see attached). It will include family activities and dinner. Cancer Support Community of Eastern North Carolina

Betty Green is the Executive Director of the Cancer Support Community Eastern NC (CSCENC), which is an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community – an international network of independently chartered nonprofits that provide professional programs for emotional support, education and hope for people impacted by cancer so that no one faces cancer alone. Betty reported that the group is fundraising to open a clubhouse in Greenville, N.C. Programs will include psychosocial support free of charge to those with a cancer diagnosis as well as their family, friends, caregivers, and loved ones. http://www.cancersupportenc.org

Holly Parrott-Hill was elected as the new Vice-Chair. Lisa Skinner remains as Chair. Ann King is Past Interim Chair and Suzanne Lea serves as coordinator.
