Dr. Alexander Siedschlag is Professor for Security Research and Chair of the Center for European Security Studies (http://www.european-security.info) at Sigmund Freud University Vienna – Paris.

A former North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) research fellow, Dr. Siedschlag started his career as a strategic analyst and then worked in the field of theories and methods of international security studies, as well as European security and defence policy. Prior appointments included Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, Ebenhausen/Germany; Free University, Berlin; Humboldt University, Berlin; Hochschule für Politik München (Munich School of Political Science); and University of Innsbruck. He subsequently expanded his research and teaching scope to include “civil security research,” and he has also served as an evaluator for the European Commission in the Preparatory Action and the Security Research theme in the 7th European Union (EU) Framework Program.

In his scholarly work, Dr. Siedschlag has recently concentrated on strategic cultures and security cultures; scenario foresight; methods of civil security research; disaster management, including the use of new social media; and civil-military relations in crisis management. He has so far authored 6 monographs and more than 100 articles, and he has edited 12 anthologies. Dr. Siedschlag also has a strong record in extramural lecturing, including the former European Security and Defence Assembly, the National Defence Academy Vienna, and the NATO School. In addition, he is a member of the working group “education and research” within the Austrian federal ICT security strategy. Dr. Siedschlag serves as the scientific as well as overall coordinator of the European Union co-funded security research project FOCUS–Foresight Security Scenarios: Mapping Research to a Comprehensive Approach to Exogenous EU Roles (http://www.focusproject.eu).

Born in West Berlin in 1971, Dr. Siedschlag holds a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in political science, sociology, and psychology from the University of Munich, and a venia legendi (“habilitation”) for political science from Humboldt University, Berlin.
