How did art and architecture reflect the values of society in the Middle Ages?

Here’s what you’ll be able to do after completing this assignment:  Describe the nature of medieval art  Identify Gothic and Romanesque architecture and describe their characteristics  Analyze the changes over time in medieval art  Understand and explain the significance of illuminated manuscripts

Directions: 1. Create a document and title it with your last name, then the title (art and architecture in the Middle Ages). It should look like this-- Wallace/Art and Architecture in the Middle Ages. Be sure to also include your name on the document itself. 2. Go to the Getty Museum. To follow the links in this page press control and click on the blue underlined text. 3. Choose three images from Early Christian and Byzantine or Early Medieval copy each one into your document. Write a caption for each one, explaining what it is and what it shows. 4. Then, title the following page-- Art in the Middle Ages. Under the title explain how the artwork typifies the Middle Ages. Make connections between the artwork and the culture which existed in Europe in the Middle Ages. 5. On the same page title the next section “Illuminated Manuscripts” add a picture of an illuminated manuscript from the Getty Museum. Add a definition of the term illuminated manuscripts under the picture. 6. Go here to this really cool site where you can actually turn the pages of an illuminated manuscript. The book may take a minute to load because it uses shockwave. Be patient. 7. Add two pictures from the Getty Museum to your document. Write a caption and identify the image AND explain why it fits the definition of an illuminated manuscript. 8. Title the next section: Gothic and Romanesque Architecture 9. Watch this 4 minute clip on Gothic and Romanesque architecture and write down the characteristics that that you see in the clip about Gothic Architecture. Add a picture of a Gothic church that reflects some of these characteristics. 10.Next, do the same for Romanesque architecture. Write down the characteristics of Romanesque architecture. Search for a couple of pictures of Romanesque churches that reflect some these characteristics and add them to your document. Why did different styles develop over this period? 11.Finally, find a picture of Gothic Church and a picture of Romanesque church place them side by side. Underneath the images compare the architecture seen in the two images. 12.Finally, write a paragraph answering the big idea question: How did art and architecture reflect the values of society in the Middle Ages? Be sure to cite examples from your research. 13. You have two options to submit your work. All work should be submitted by the end of the school day Thursday March 17th a. You can save your work and put it in my hand- ins folder on the school server. If you choose this option be sure to place it in the folder for your class period. (The hand-in folder should be on your desktop or under the start menu) OR b. You can print your document and hand it in to me.
