Dante Alighieri claims that before achieving moral redemption (forgiveness of sins), an individual must take a hard look at evil both in the world and in himself. Only by confronting inner evil can people achieve self-knowledge, which is the first step toward redemption.

Dante also says that people should not be expected to make their journey alone; they need a guide to help them. For Dante’s own journey as described in his writing, he chose the poet Virgil to guide him through hell.

Directions: Divided into groups of 3 or 4, your task is to:

 Develop a geography of hell based on your life experiences (brainstorm with your group members: what have you seen, heard, or experienced that you deem evil or wrong, or a humorous take on Hell)

 Decide which sins belong inside each circle, or level, of hell (For example: If you have Fraud as one level of hell, liars would go there) WARNING: STEALING SINS FROM DANTE’S INFERNO WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. BE ORIGINAL .  Select a famous or well-known person to guide your journey through hell (he or she should be relevant)
