You Can Help Bring Lyles Station, Indiana to the National Stage!

You can help bring Lyles Station, Indiana to the national stage!

In association with the Smithsonian Institute, Lyles Station, Indiana will be holding a Photo ID day

WHEN: Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (CST)

WHERE: Lyles Station Historic School & Museum, 953 N 500 W, Princeton, IN 47670

WHY: The purpose of the Photo ID day is to enlist the help of community members to identify people pictured in Lyles photos and provide any history they might know regarding the photos.

In addition, anyone with historical photographs or other artifacts connected to Lyles Station are asked to bring them to the school to be scanned or photographed. These images will then be reviewed by representatives from the Smithsonian Institute for possible inclusion in the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opening in Washington D.C. in 2015. All artifacts &/or photographs will be returned to the owner on the same day. (Please keep in mind, nothing will be donated to the Smithsonian on October 15th—this will just be an opportunity to give them an idea of what artifacts/photos are in existence.) If you have items or photographs that you feel are too fragile to transport, we encourage you to bring or send photos of those items so that they might be viewed by the Smithsonian on the Photo ID day at Lyles Station.

We feel it will be a great honor to have Lyles Station represented in such a prestigious museum and will enable visitors from around the world to learn of the important role this community has played in our nation’s history.

Please help us as we seek items that help to tell our story. If you are interested in participating in the Photo ID day but are unable to attend during the scheduled time, please contact us so that we may make other arrangements to view your photos or articles.

If you can help, please e-mail [email protected] or call Stanley Madison at 812-779-7456 so that we will have an idea of how many people will be participating. It would be very helpful to us if you could also provide a brief description of your artifacts/photos, i.e. old Lyles School report card, classroom photo, family reunion photo, etc.

Thank you very much for your help as we seek items that help to tell the story of Lyles Station, Indiana!

Sincerely, Stanley Madison, Chairman Lyles Station Historic Preservation Corporation
