Area demographic profile This information is provided by the Local Development Team (LDT) and indicates any known changes in the demographic profile in the area. Some of the data may not be statistical but what is known locally from networking with agencies and settings.

Childcare places analysis This data is produced by the Local Development Team from known changes in the childcare market that have occurred in the period.

Availability of places There are sufficient places in Basingstoke and Deane for families to access. Planned housing developments are monitored to ensure sufficient childcare is available. Where a need is identified working with local providers and Basingstoke and Deane provision will be grown to meet the need.

New provision This is data that is known to the Local Development Team of childcare developments that have completed registration in the period. That data is to include all types of provision including childminders.

Comment: The 30 place setting is to be located in an industrial area within ½ mile of housing and offers the opportunity for working parents to choose childcare close to their place of work. They are also sited ½ a mile from the nearest childcare providers.

Comment: Two pre schools have closed during this quarter with new providers opening in the same area so there has been no impact on the number of places available locally. While 7 childminders have ceased operation two have been inactive for some time. The closure of the remaining 5 childminders has resulted in the temporary loss of 21 places. Childminders who have recently registered and those proposing to open are in the same Wards and will ensure sufficient places in these locations

Comment: One provider has withdrawn from the EYE scheme. 100% of the remaining settings now deliver 15 hours free entitlement.

Two settings have closed during this period one temporarily which will reopen in January 2011 at a new location. (Chatterbox 32 + Wishing Well 24)

In addition 11 Childminders are EYE providers who currently support 12 children.

Development of Childminder Networks There are 38 Network Childminders of these 24 are Community Childminders with a further 6 SPACE child minders. 5 childminders are working towards becoming community childminders and a further childminder will be joining the SPACE team

Development of extended schools activities and out of school/holiday provision During half term Testbourne will be running a Football tournament, Climbing and multi sports. There are no activities planned for the Christmas break.

Parental demand There have been no unmet requests for childcare from parents in this quarter

Grant funding There have been no grant awards made during this period

Housing Development North Hampshire Housing construction in the area continues with a further 500 houses proposed for the area behind Rooksdown. Developments are being monitored and plans for provision are being developed.

Conclusion While there have been changes in the childcare market during this quarter this has not had an impact on provision. While two settings have closed a further two have opened in the same locality. Similarly childminder provision has experienced some movement.

A new activity centre has opened in Basingstoke providing affordable activities for 0 – 16 year olds. The centre proposes developing holiday provision.

The local development team continue to promote registration amongst providers of activity based schemes.

The community building at Taylors Farm due to open Spring 2011 http://www.sherfieldparkcommunity.co.uk/ will provide an opportunity for further childcare provision to support families moving into those areas.
