Organic livestock farming Policy

The health and welfare of animals on organic farms should not be compromised in order to maintain organic status. Organic farming practices, accreditation schemes and regulations must ensure the highest standards of animal health and welfare.

Guidelines

All treatments used must be scientifically evidence-based.

All medications used must be registered for food-producing animals in Australia.

Appropriate preventative treatments and strategies, such as vaccinations, parasite control and nutritional supplements must be used.

If regular anthelmintic programs are not practised then routine veterinary visits to conduct herd health and routine faecal egg counts must be performed.

Sick or injured animals must receive appropriate treatment, veterinary intervention or humane destruction. Failure to do so should be reported to the animal welfare authorities.

Mortalities and morbidity above accepted industry norms must be thoroughly investigated by a veterinarian.
