The holder of the qualification is able to manage risk, assess and manage an emergency care situation, plan an adventure tourism activity, complete pre- and post-activity duties, and guide clients through an adventure tourism activity using customer service, communication and leadership skills. In addition, they are able to demonstrate and apply knowledge of environmental responsibility and industry standards for adventure tourism. The qualification is intended for people training for a career, or currently employed, in the adventure tourism industry in New Zealand.

The elective section allows people to select standards, relevant to their particular industry and organisational requirements, from a range of areas such as business administration services, core health, outdoor recreation, and tourism Māori.

This qualification is not intended to recognise the specific skills of particular Adventure Tourism disciplines; but rather to provide the common skills necessary for any adventure tourism activity, focussing on creating a safe, enjoyable, informative and environmentally sound tourism experience for visitors.

People can build on the skills covered in this qualification through standards and qualifications recognised by various bodies in the Adventure Tourism sector, such as New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association, the Sea Kayak Operators Association of New Zealand, and the New Zealand Rafting Association.

This qualification may build on the National Certificate in Tourism (Core Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 0876] and may provide a pathway to the National Diploma in Tourism (Management) (Level 5) [Ref: 0473].
