East Texas Theological Seminary

Philosophy

The East Texas Theological Seminary was founded to make available valid and affordable Theological Degrees to all who labor in His service. We are an accelerated school, which allow students to obtain their degree within two years. The high standard of administration, instruction, and guidance is reflected by our dedicated staff at ETTS. You can be assured the Christian way is our way. Your goal is our goal because of HIM. You’ll find our tuition is lower when compared to similar Bible Colleges & Seminaries. It is intended that way. “Man does not live by bread alone.” Because the income of those who labor for the Master does not compare favorably with other demanding professions, ETTS tuitions and study materials are consistently reasonable.

Statement of Faith

The ministry, instruction, and curriculum of the East Texas Theological Seminary is totally Bible-centered and based. The Holy Bible & Cross is depicted in the ETTS Corporate logo, it represents our philosophy: The open book, Word of Divine Revelation to all who seek it. We believe in and teach the scriptures of Old and New Testament as the Inspired Word of God, the Eternal and Final Authority in Christian Faith and Life.

The East Texas Theological Seminary is evangelical. We are not in conflict with any truly Christian faith. We are not affiliated with any church denomination, assembly, or conference. Our Faith is in Our Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit as revealed in the Bible. Our belief is complete in His Holy Word as it is written, nothing added, nothing taken away. All are encouraged to be faithful to their beliefs. There is no persuasion by ETTS to change one’s denomination or faith. Our joyous duty is to live, share, and teach His Holy Word.

Accreditation

What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a voluntary process by which primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, and professional schools submit themselves to a comprehensive review process by an outside agency to ensure quality and institutional integrity. The most credible type of accreditation in the United States is called "regional" accreditation, which means that a institution is accredited by one of the six geographically dispersed associations approved by both the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Accreditation is basically an organized way of determining the acceptance of credits or degrees from any particular institution. This process is extremely expensive and does not make quality education any better. Since academic recognition is a continual process, the administration, faculty and staff of ETTS has made a commitment to provide the highest quality standards of education without compromise, to the Biblical and theological philosophies of Christianity and without any government interference. Please note that this approach to accreditation is uniquely American as most universities outside of the United States are, and they are under a government charter or approval.

6 Is It Really Necessary to attend a regionally Accredited School for you?

It all depends! If you are pursuing a college degree through a Christian school for the purpose of seeking employment in the secular world, then our advice to you is to seek elsewhere. On the other hand, if you are seeking a degree from a Christian school for the purpose of perfecting your ministry, your church body, then ETTS is the place for you. You do not need an accredited degree to be an effective leader in fulfilling the great commission. If you were to ask such a thing in order to be a pastor, a teacher, or a leader in a Christian environment, I would recommend that you run as fast as you can.

If God is the one who called you, then your commission is from him not from a man or a board. If you are seeking employment from a church then you have to please them and ignore God in the process. God simply ask you to study to show thyself approved unto him a workman who can rightly divide the word of the truth, and to be always ready to give an account for the hope you profess. Beside the confirmation of his calling you into ministry, the other crucial thing you need is education and training. Beside, Regionally Accredited Schools cannot afford to offer you tuition this low. It takes Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars to obtain accreditation, plus it is irrelevant to Christian ministry.

Where does ETTS fit into this?

Great question! Degrees offered by ETTS are strictly religious in nature for ministry training purposes only. We are not training people for advancement in the secular field of employment. No guarantee is made, implied or explicit in any form except what is noted here. However, ETTS is ecclesial accredited with the National Association of Private Theological Institutions, and National Bible College Association both of New Albany, IN. You may call, email or write to check the status of our accreditation, which is listed below.

The book of Acts describes the history of the early Christians and the spread of the Church. CE 104 How to Study the Bible

How to study the bible is ideal manual that introduces students of the Bible to intricacies, from the youngest neophyte to the most skilled veteran church member, both clergy and laity alike. Bible Study should become an integral part of the life of every church and believer.

TH 201 Biblical Hermeneutics

Biblical hermeneutics is the science and art of biblical interpretation. In 2 Timothy 2:15, the apostle Paul exhorted Timothy to study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. In this course you will learn 30 biblical based principles that will equip you interpret the Bible correctly. By applying these principles to your study of the Scriptures, you will gain great insight into them and be better able to recognize and reject false doctrine. (David R. Reid)

CC 202 Christian Counseling I

This course will be a survey with a Biblical basis for counseling, integration of psychology and theology, counseling needs, methods of counseling, and theories of personality.

BS 203 Survey of Romans

The gospel-“The power of God to salvation for everyone who believes”- is the subject of Paul’s letter to the Church of Rome. The apostle offers a clear exposition of the condition of man and God’s plan to save him through Christ’s work on the cross. New believers learn of their identification with Christ and how, in the power of the Holy Spirit, they can live a victorious life. Mature believers can enjoy the deeper truths of doctrine, prophecy, and Christian living. This concise study asks eleven exploratory questions and then seeks to answer them from the orderly, reasoned argument that Paul sets forth. The student will gain, to quote the course’s author,’ a working knowledge’ of the book. (William MacDonald)

MI 204 Biblical Stewardship

Do you know what stewardship encompasses? Does it deal only with your personal possessions? Are you aware that biblical stewardship includes much more than money issues? Biblical stewardship is a whole-life responsibility. Alfred Martin begins his book by presenting creation as the basis of God's ownership. He goes on to show that stewardship is a lifestyle involving the effective use of body, mind, time, speech, and action as well as money. This book will challenge your thinking. It will help you see that stewardship is not an option for the believer but a responsibility. It will guide you in setting priorities that will help you become a good steward of the manifold grace of God.

14 CE 301 Teaching Techniques

Teaching Techniques: Revitalizing Methodology" focuses on the philosophical basis of teaching methods with insights from current research. Selecting appropriate teaching methods need not be a daunting task. When the teacher understands God's perspective on the ministry of teaching, selection then becomes a process of meeting the lesson's objective through attention to student learning styles, learning domains, and innovative techniques. Both teacher-centered and student-centered methods are explored with refreshing insights. This book also serves as an excellent companion to the ETA course Understanding Teaching. (ETA)

TH 302 Homiletics

Preaching is both an art and a science. The good preacher has not only mastered the rules of hermeneutics and homiletics but also has imagination, flair, and personality to make his sermons come alive. In the text by Alfred P. Gibbs, you will learn of the importance of homiletics, the qualifications of the preacher, the necessity for preaching and the how-to’s for the deliverance of many types of sermons. This text will help you master the techniques of opening up a passage of Scripture. You will learn the basic principles of Bible interpretation. You will study ways of gathering material gives the facts; the exams help you to put the facts into actual use. (Alfred P. Gibbs)

CC 303 Marriage & Family Counseling

Family life is important to every generation. This practical course will provide fresh insight into the biblical foundation for marriage and family life, the roles of husband and wife in the home, and the role of parents in child rearing and training. It provides an insight into what the Bible tells us marriage and family life can and should be.

BS 304 Personal Evangelism

Every time we meet Andrew in the New Testament, he is pointing someone to Christ. The first time we see him as a personal worker, bringing his own brother Simon to the Savior (John 1:40-41). The second time we see him he is doing children’s evangelism and is bringing a boy to the Lord Jesus (John 6:8-9). The third time he is engaged in a foreign missionary work and is introducing certain Greeks to the Master (John 12:20-23). On each occasion, Andrew is engaged in personal evangelism. This course is designed to help you equip yourself for the greatest of all ministers, that of bringing men and woman, boys and girls to Christ. (Alfred P. Gibbs)

MI 305 Ecclesiology (Study of the Church)

What should the church be like? Is there an obvious, consistent picture of the church in the Bible? Was that kind of congregation intended as the pattern for generations of Christians following? Can it be lived two thousand years later? The author answers, “Yes, yes, yes.” This is not a theoretical book. William MacDonald has witnessed others carrying out the New Testament pattern for church life in countries around the world. He has practiced and promoted these same principles, and happily, he knows how to communicate on paper.

William MacDonald shows how the Bible itself clears away the rubble of human tradition, and religious ritual. The bible itself presents a clear mandate for assembly life where the true authority of the Head of God’s right hand is known, loved and served. When you discover the Head of the Church in this way, you will also love His people. Do you love the body of Christ? You can. You should? 15 CE 401 Christian Education I & II

These courses are more than just a comprehensive collection of information on Christian Education. They are working tools to provide both a clear understanding of basic principles of Christian education and a practical guide for day-to-day administration of church-education programs.

TH 402 Systemic Theology

With today’s contemporary culture attacking the foundational truths of the Bible, Christians must remain vigilant in defending the Gospel. To effectively do this, however, believers must be firmly rooted in God’s Word. The twelve lessons of Basic Bible Doctrines provides a solid foundation from which your faith can grow. Topics of study include the Bible, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, angels, man, sin, salvation, the church, and future events. (R. E. Harlow)

CC 403 Christian Counseling II

This course is design to help those who have a desire to help friends who face difficult situation. We often don't know how to respond-especially when a crisis appears. However, this course will give tips on how to understand the feelings your "neighbor" is experiencing and practical advice on how to help and encourage.

BS 207Survey of Acts

The book of Acts is part two of Luke’s two-part history of Christ and the early church. The book tells us how the early church faced the challenge of the Great Commission. It covers a period of some 30 years from the birth of the church on the Day of Pentecost to the close of Paul’s imprisonment in Rome. It is a story of people, places and principles. It covers the spread of Christianity, starting in Jerusalem, through present day Syria, Turkey and Greece, until at last it reached to Rome. It starts with Peter, introducing us to Phillip, Stephen and Barnabas, and finishes with Paul. It provides us with principles for missions, service and dealing with church problems. Luke provides us with a fast moving and exciting history of the early church. (R. E. Harlow)
