We have three exceptional presentations for you this evening! The main program and tech session will focus on the new Indiana Energy Code. Our main program speaker is a former chair and current R member of the ASHRAE 90.1 development committee. Our tech session speaker is a consultant for the State of Indiana charged with informing the building and design industry on the new Indiana Energy Code. Our third presentation is during dinner and will be a student presentation of the Solar Decathlon at Purdue. We hope you can make it to what should be a very informative evening. See below for A more information.

Main Program: Our topic this month is: Compliance with the new Indiana Energy Code (ASHRAE 90.1-2007.) E Indiana's new energy code requires the minimum energy efficiency for commercial buildings to meet or exceed ASHRAE 90.1-2007 with Indiana amendments. Our presenter is a former chair and active participant in ASHRAE Standard 90.1 development and is familiar with the Indiana amendments. Attendees will learn of the latest changes to the ASHRAE Standard and look at the criteria and compliance options. Dr. McBride will focus on how to implement some of the more difficult or unfamiliar aspects of the standard such as fan power, energy recovery, and demand controlled ventilation requirements to name a few. He will also explain requirements for service water heating and heat recovery. Material presented will address both prescriptive and performance based compliance. Bring your questions!

The speaker is Dr. Merle F. McBride, Senior Research Associate, who has been a research engineer at the Owens Corning Center of Science and Technology for 31 years. He received his degrees from The Ohio State University in 1970, 1973, and 1979 all majoring in mechanical engineering. His technical focus has been related to insulation product and process development and the energy performance of residential and commercial buildings. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Ohio and is a past member of the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) board of directors.

CENTRAL INDIANA CHAPTER ASHRAE NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2010 Dr. McBride is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in which he has been active at the national level since 1976. He has served on several Technical Committees, was Chair of the Charter and By-laws Committee, member of ASHRAE Standard 90.2, was Chair of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 from 1991-1995, and is currently Chair of the Planning, Policy and Interpretations Subcommittee of the Standards Committee. He has published collectively 42 external technical papers, journal articles and books, 25 Owens Corning technical reports, made over 40 presentations, was awarded two U.S. patents, received the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award (1999) and the Willis H. Carrier Award for the best technical paper by a member that was less than 32 years of age (1975), two Owens Corning Gala Awards (1994, 1999), an Owens Corning Innovation Award (1985), and the MIMA Stanley L. Matthews Award (1989). Most recently he has been a voting member on all of the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDG) which includes small office buildings, highway lodging and health care, Chair of small retail buildings, Vice Chair of Schools K-12 and Vice Chair of Warehouses. A

Tech Session: The Tech Session presentation will be a discussion regarding achieving and demonstrating compliance with ASHRAE 90.1-2007. We’ll discuss compliance paths, verification, and barriers – both the S experience of those in the audience as well as what the standard requires.

CENTRAL INDIANA CHAPTER ASHRAE NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2010 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE The new ASHRAE calendar year is in full swing. We have managed another golf outing without rain and with that the 2010 Golf outing was a success. Our attendance was up from last year! Everyone I’ve spoken to had enjoyed the golf, food and prizes at the end of the day. Clay Runshe did an outstanding job of putting it all together, Thank you Clay! There was much fun in trading door prize tickets. I wouldn’t have thought that there would be much superstition within the engineering community. But there appeared to be many lucky numbers. It was fun watching people trade their losing ticket, only for it to win the next draw. For next year, I know who to trade tickets with to improve the odds of winning a door prize. Again, thank you all for making this a great event and supporting ASHRAE research. 2010/2011 Program Now that we are back from the summer vacations and have started the monthly meetings, our next meeting is October 12. Indiana has adopted a new energy code, ASHRAE 90.1 2007 with amendments. It is significantly different than the previous Indiana energy Code. Our dinner meeting will feature Merle McBride, Ph.D. who is currently appointed to the 90.1 standards committee. Mr. McBride will give us some insights on the standard 90.1 and help us understand our new Indiana code. As part of this code pertains to non-HVAC systems, we have invited the American Society of Plumbing Engineers to join us. We should have some new faces at the meeting, so please welcome them at the meeting! New Membership Chair We have a new ASHRAE membership Chair! Chris Hawk has joined our CIC ASHRAE Chapter and has stepped up to be the Membership Chair for 2010-2011. Please put him in contact with any new people who may be interested in joining ASHRAE. I look forward to another great meeting and hope to see you all there on October! Sincerely, Kevin J. Schulte

Purdue University: 2011 U.S. D.O.E. Solar Decathlon - CIC ASHRAE - INHome Corporate Challenge Purdue University has earned the opportunity to compete in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams across the world to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and eye-catching. To generate necessary funding to compete in the competition, Team Purdue has decided to organize a Corporate Challenge with student organizations related to the Solar Decathlon project. For college students, fundraising over $500,000 for this project is a daunting task. Since the Purdue ASHRAE club has been active in the Purdue’s INHome success from the very beginning, we wanted to target the CIC ASHRAE first.

We would like to challenge each CIC ASHRAE member’s accompanying business to consider making a monetary donation to the team. Recognition will be given to those who donate on the team’s website, publications, and outreach materials. Furthermore, a student from the Purdue INHome team will be present at each monthly meeting to give an update on the challenge and encourage those to continue their support. The deadline for the Corporate Challenge will be January 31st, 2011.

The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002; the fifth competition will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in October of 2011. Open to the public and free of charge, the competition was created to offer visitors ideas of how energy-saving features and innovations can be integrated into houses today. The competition provided 300,000 visits per house over 10 days in 2009! Millions of readers and viewers were reached through various media during the competition! Most importantly, the competition has prepared students with the training necessary to join our nation’s clean-energy workforce.

Starting October 12th at the monthly CIC ASHRAE seminar, the Purdue INHome team would like to kickoff the CIC ASHRAE Corporate Challenge with a technical presentation of Purdue’s INHome. A group of students will discuss the house with those present and open up the floor for comments and suggestions. It will be both informative for those attending and beneficial to the INHome team to utilize the professional experience from these members. The group will consist of Purdue ASHRAE students, as well as others from different disciplines across campus. If you have any questions feel free to contact me, Jordan Wallpe: [email protected] at anytime. If you want to contribute now, please visit our website http://www.purdue.edu/inhome/ and click on the sponsors tab.

Thank you, Jordan Wallpe, Past President Purdue ASHRAE Student Chapter
