INTRODUCTION: Our surroundings affect us in subtle and not so subtle ways. Having learned the basics of the elements and principles of design in the previous module, you will now learn how they may be applied to your surroundings to enhance and personalize your “space”. You will study some basic decorating styles and begin to cultivate what you will identify as your own “taste” in furnishings.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this module your will be able to:

-identify reasons for enhancing and beautifying one’s environment. -use the elements and principles of design to analyze various decors. -distinguish between formal and informal, traditional and contemporary decors -relate your personal preferences to identified decorating styles. -analyze your own present space at home and represent it on a scale drawing of a floorplan. -use computer skills to create a floor plan. -distinguish between color schemes

1. Locate the pretest and complete it according to the instructions before you go to the next step.

2. Review the vocabulary words before you begin the module. When you find the words in the reading material or videos as you come to them during the next few days, define them on your own paper.  Furnishings  Accessories  Floor plan  Traffic pattern  Dead storage  Intangible  Traditional  Contemporary  Formal  informal

3. Locate the newspaper article “Design of Room Influences Mood” at the end of this activity and read it. (It continues as “Colors, style... etc.”) Label a sheet of notebook paper with your name, Activity #1 and “Article”. Write a response to the article, including whether you agree with the author’s viewpoint and why. Also give your opinion about whether our surroundings and the way they appear should be important to us or not, and why. Your response should be at least a half page.

4. Hopefully, you were instructed earlier to try to bring in some decorating magazines and furniture sale flyers to use in your activities. Locate some of those now, or find any that may be provided in the classroom. You will also need scissors and glue or tape.

5. Find a picture of a room (not just a piece of furniture) that illustrates each of the following elements of design. Attach the pictures to notebook paper and label them with the appropriate title and explanation of where in the picture the element is found: (You will have 7 different pictures.)

6. Label the paper with Activity #1 and “Elements of Design”. Clip the paper into your notebook.

Modules/Interior Decorating Revised, May 2007 7. Important!!: For Activity 3 you will need measurements of your room at home. Right now, sketch the shape of your room on a sheet of paper. When you get home, measure each wall and record the measurement on your sketch. You have two days to do this. Make a note in your agenda or assignment book to remind yourself.

8. If you have time, for enrichment: Read the information sheet called “The world of Interior Design as a career.” You may research on the web.

9. Clean up your module area and make sure everything is returned to its proper location.

Activity #2

1. Locate the textbook, Applying Life Skills and read pages 611-625. Remember to look for your vocabulary words and define them as you read.

2. Locate the video Interior Design. Using your own notebook paper write ten facts from the video.

3. Locate the textbook, Applying Life Skills and the color schemes on pages 614 - 615.

4. Decide which of these color schemes you like.

5. Decide which specific colors you want from the color wheel. You will need to know the specific color names to create your chosen color scheme.

6. Show your teacher your choices.

7. Locate the paper labeled Color Schemes. Color the sheet using the color scheme you chose.. You will need color pencils for this activity.

8. Remember to measure your room at home for your next lesson.

9. Return everything to its place and clean up your module area.

ACTIVITY #3

1. Today you are going to make a scale drawing of your room at home using the measurements you were assigned to do in Activity 1. If for some reason you do not have those measurements, skip this Activity and do Activity #4 today. Just be sure to have the measurements for your next lesson so that you can complete the floor plan activity. 2. On a piece of graph paper which you can get from your teacher, sketch your bedroom using the measurements you collected. Each square is to equal one square foot. Place all doors, windows, and fixed objects. Draw your furniture on the floor plan as it is located now. For help, find the sample floor plan at the end of this activity and see how the windows, doors, etc. are drawn. The furniture templates on the next page can be used to sketch your furniture. Label this drawing “My Room”.

3. Computer Activity Using the Interior Design Program on OJ Software draw your Bedroom and arrange the room as it is now or make some changes. You can change the furniture in your room to reflect what you would like to have in your room. Print your work and label it new furniture arrangement.. .

4. If there is time remaining in the class period, locate the article “Split Siblings” and read it. Write your own response to the letter on a sheet of notebook paper. Label it Activity #3 and put it into your notebook.

5. Clean up your module area and return everything to its place.

1. Now since your have designed your current room and made changes to it, you get a chance to make your dream bedroom. Get a piece of graph paper from Mrs. Baggett to design your dream bedroom on.

 Can use pictures from magazines showing furniture and accessories you will use in your room design.  Bedroom floor plan that is not larger than 15 X 20 feet. You should show furniture arrangement and include all windows, doors and closets in this plan.  Can say what color scheme your dream room will be.

2. Get the textbook called Applying Life Skills. Turn to page 626. Using your own paper answer the 11 questions under Reviewing Key Terms & Ideas.

3. Locate the Posttest at the end of this activity and bubble in your answers in the proper location on your answer sheet.

4. Now you are going to make your cover sheet. On a sheet of paper, put your name, class and student number in the upper right hand corner. Put your module name, “Interior Decorating” on the top line. List the following:

After completing this module you may find yourself thinking of Interior Design as a possible career. You may know someone who is already in the business. Interior Design has a broad range of career options. There are many famous designers who have made their mark in the residential and commercial fields of Design.

One of the latest trends in residential design is called Staging. Staging is when you hire someone come into your home to give advice on how to make it market ready to sell. People in the field of Interior Design are great for this job since they work with people on basic home design. You can even get certified in Staging. This could add to your credibility as a Designer.

Another large aspect to Interior Design is the commercial design field. Think about it. Someone has to decide where an office of five people or five thousand will work. Office furniture just like furnishings for the home must be durable and flexible for the tasks they are designed for.
