SMHS Spanish 1 syllabus SeÑora Erica scott
¡Felicitaciones! – You have made a wise choice by choosing to learn Spanish as a foreign language. There are very good reasons for learning Spanish: (the 4 C’s)
I am a Spanish teacher, and of course, you will be leaning the Spanish language. However, my plan is to expose you to all of the Spanish speaking countries and their unique cultures, traditions, and history. You will have a chance to eat, observe, sing, and even dance as a part of your cultural experience!
The class will be taught using the school textbook ¡Así se dice! and other supplemental material.
Goals: This class will provide an introduction to the Spanish language through oral and written practice. Students will also be exposed to the culture of the Spanish speaking countries.
The following instructional topics will be introduced this semester: Introductory lessons (A-G) - greetings, goodbyes, numbers, the date, the time, the seasons and weather. Chapter 1 ______What are we like? – describe people and things, tell where someone is from, and tell what school subjects you are taking and your opinions about them. Chapter 2 ______The family and home -Discuss families and pets, describe a house or apartment, describe rooms and furnishings. Chapter 3 ______In the classroom and after class – Discuss what you do in school, school clothes and supplies, free time, compare school and free time activities in Spanish speaking countries and the US. Chapter 4 ______What we eat and where? – Identify foods and discuss meals, places to eat, ordering food and beverage, compare eating habits in Spain, Latin America, and the US. Chapter 5 ______Sports – talk about different sports, describe a uniform, and identify colors. Chapter 6 ______Wellbeing – Describe people’s personalities, conditions, and emotions, minor illnesses, and a doctor’s visit. Chapter 7 ______On vacation – Summer and winter weather activities and discuss summer and winter resorts in Spanish speaking countries. Chapter 8 ______In your free time – discuss birthday parties, concerts, movies and museums, Hispanic art and music. Chapter 9 ______Let’s go shopping! – Talk about buying clothes and food, compare shopping in Spanish speaking countries and the US. Chapter 10 ______On the plane – Talk about packing for a trip and getting to the airport, tell what you do at the airport, talk about being on a plane. Chapter 11 ______A different routine – Identify more parts of the body, talk about daily routine, talk about backpacking and camping.
I like to use several types of learning techniques such as demonstrations, repetition. Lectures, role playing/reader’s theater, flash cards, written communication, oral communication, projects, art, culturally significant video presentations, games, music and reading comprehension. You should be aware that everyone is expected to do an oral presentation on a Spanish speaking country. The schedule for the presentation and the assigned country will be given within the first full week of school. You have PLENTY of advanced notice for this project. I expect to see outstanding work.
You should know that I am a firm believer in the Jackson County School District student handbook. I know that the administration will support me on such issues as cellphone use, tardiness, absences, cheating, exemptions, classroom disturbances, uniform/dress code violations, and following my classroom rules. In the event that you are “written up” as a violation for any offense, please know that I am simply doing the job that is expected of me to maintain order in my classroom.
It’s going to be a great semester!
