Responsible To: Senior Ecologist
Purpose of Job
As directed by the Senior Ecologist or Team Leader, the postholder will carry out and support with the delivery of commissioned ecological survey contracts across the Wildscapes working region. Predominantly, delivering Extended Phase 1 assessments, the postholder will also support with the provision of protected species surveys.
Main Responsibilities
1. Carrying out Extended Phase 1 surveys and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals as directed. 2. Supporting the delivery of protected species surveys. 3. Timely and accurate report writing. 4. Assisting with pricing, tendering and quotations. 5. Liaising with clients. 6. Assisting on GIS projects. 7. Adhere to Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust Health & Safety Policy and Procedures. 8. Any other relevant duties required of the postholder at this grade. Job Specification
DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary £21,346.58 pro rata (0.6FTE)
Terms of Employment: Temporary, to 31 October 2016
Working Hours: This position is being offered on a part time basis (0.6FTE), working pattern to be agreed. Due to the nature of the role, regular evening, occasional weekend and occasional overnight work stays will be required, for which time off will be allowed in lieu subject to T.O.I.L procedures.
Location: The post is based at Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust HQ, Victoria Hall, 37 Stafford Road, Sheffield, S2 2SF with regular travel required to worksites across the working region.
Annual Leave: Pro rata, based on a full time equivalent allocation of 20 days per year plus an additional three days to be taken between Christmas and New Year. The postholder will also receive a pro rata holiday bonus of one additional day for each full year worked for the first five years of full time service up to a maximum of five additional days. All above figures are pro rata for part time staff.
Transport provision: Suitable transport, to and from work sites will be provided where possible. The postholder will also ideally have their own vehicle (with business insurance cover) for occasional use. Mileage costs reimbursed as per Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust policy. Person Specification
Experience ▪ At least six months of relevant work experience (essential). ▪ Carrying out Extended Phase 1 surveys (essential). ▪ Assisting on protected species surveys (desirable) of one or more of the following: bats; badgers, great crested newts; water voles; birds or other specialist floral or faunal groups. ▪ Report writing. ▪ Assisting with drafting fee quotes. ▪ Working to deadlines.
Knowledge and skills.
▪ Good botanical identification skills (essential). ▪ Understanding of nature conservation and ecology (including survey techniques). ▪ Health and safety in the workplace (including risk assessment). ▪ IT systems including Microsoft Office and GIS (ideally MapInfo). ▪ Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision. ▪ Good verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications
▪ Full driving licence (essential). ▪ Degree in an ecology related subject or substantial work experience (essential). ▪ First aid qualification (desirable). ▪ Membership of, or working towards membership of, The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) (desirable).
