2010 Special Olympics USA National Games - Golf Venues Fact Sheet

The City of Lincoln’s Mahoney Golf Course will play host to all 9-hole play at the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games. Competition will begin daily for Levels II and IV at 8:30am with a Shotgun Start.

Level II Competition, a 9-hole alternate shot format, pairs a Special Olympics golfer with a non-Special Olympics partner. The players alternate strokes from the tee until the ball is holed out. Level II is designed as a mentoring stage in the golfer’s progression. This athlete has mastered the Individual Skills Competition and is developing the on-course knowledge in hopes of competing individually one day.

Level IV is a 9-hole individual play format. This athlete has moved out of the mentoring stage and is able to physically and mentally play nine holes of golf without any assistance. The jump from Level II to Level IV is a significant one in the development of the golfer.

Mahoney Golf Course is a municipal golf course which opened for play in 1976. This picturesque course with its rolling hills and majestic trees lends itself to both golfer and spectator. The fairways are irrigated and fairly wide, while the greens are undulating and about medium in size.

The Individual Skills competition features golfers who are new to the game or have not mastered the required skills to advance to nine-hole partner play. These golfers are instrumental to the future success of the golf program as they will ensure growth in other levels of play in the future. Level I competition consists of six skill competitions for each athlete. These skills are as follows:

1) Wood Shot 2) Iron Shot 3) Pitch Shot 4) Chip Shot 5) Short Putt 6) Long Putt

Each golfer plays five shots at each station and receives scores based on the results of each shot. Points scored in each skill are added up for a grand total. This competition is unique for golf as the competitor with the highest score wins. ALSO - The City of Lincoln’s Highlands Golf Course will play host to all 18-hole play at the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games. Competition will begin daily for Levels III and V at 8:30am with a Shotgun Start.

Level III Competition is an 18-hole alternate shot format which pairs a Special Olympics golfer with a non-Special Olympics Unified partner. The players alternate strokes from the tee until the ball is holed out. This is a Unified level of play where the athlete and partner are comparable in ability. These athletes clearly have an understanding of the game and are physically able to compete in an 18-hole competition.

Level V Competition, an 18-hole individual play format, is sure to provide some exciting golf. Golfers competing in Level V have physically mastered the 9-hole competition and have advanced to the most skilled individual competition available.

Highlands Golf Course, a links-style course, opened for play in September of 1993. This 18-hole public facility is noted for its many “huge” sand traps, both on the fairways and green side. The natural rolling hill terrain is prairie-style with its well- maintained areas of wildlife.
