The Rules and regulations of the Faculty of Science state that the requirement for registration for the BSc Honours in Energy Studies is subject to appropriate undergraduate studies and experience in the energy industry. A Batchelor’s degree is a prerequisite for admission.
The University does not recognise national diplomas, certificates or short courses as the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree. Those who have such qualifications and want to pursue this course in Energy Studies are urged to work for a BSc qualification through whatever means are available to you (such as studying at Unisa, for example).
An applicable BTech degree, or a Bachelor’s degree other than BSc (such as a BCom), together with sufficient applicable experience in the energy industry, can qualify you for enrolment in this course. In such instances the ‘Status Application Form’ at the end of this document must be submitted with your application.
Application procedure
Please complete the Departmental Application Form (and Status Application Form where applicable).
A departmental selection panel will consider your applications for the BSc Energy Studies Honours programme. A 65% average mark for the final year of your degree is normally required. Exceptions can be made for students with sufficient and appropriate work experience. You may be required to present yourself for an interview as part of the selection process. If you are accepted, you will be advised by email and you must then register in person at the UJ APK Campus and simultaneously also submit the official UJ application form to the Faculty of Science C-Ring 2, together with proof of the required payment.
Course Overview for 2017
The 2017 first-year programme will cover three modules, namely Energy Technology, Energy Economics and international aspects of energy which we call ‘Energy Politics’. These will run concurrently in eight monthly contact sessions at the University of Johannesburg.
You must register for the following first year modules:
ENS0027 – Energy Politics (international, geographic and political aspects of energy) – 25 credits ENS0037 – Energy Economics – 25 credits ENS0047 – Energy Technology – 30 credits
This first year is the foundation year of the course, and must be completed before students proceed to the second year. It is not possible to study for first and second years concurrently, therefore this degree is not offered on a full-time basis.
Self-study, reading, and project and assignment work will be conducted in your own time between the contact sessions. Module marks will be awarded throughout the year for performance and participation. There will be regular tests and examinations at both mid-year and year-end. A module semester mark is awarded for performance during the year, and counts 50% towards the final mark, of which the final examination makes up 50%. Students who do not achieve a minimum 40% for a module are not allowed to write the final examination and may not proceed further with the course.
Each monthly contact session will usually comprise the following:
A Thursday evening lecture session from 17:30 to 20:00. A flexible Friday session including field trip with guest lectures and other activities (full day). A flexible Saturday morning session comprising lectures, or tests or student presentations in seminar format, from 09:00 to 12:00.
Out of town students will need to arrange accommodation near the University for the Thursday and Friday evenings. This is for your own account.
Past field trips have involved visits to the Lethabo Power Station near Vereeniging, the New Vaal Colliery that supplies Lethabo, Sasol II and III at Secunda, the Kwikot geyser and solar water heater factory in Benoni, the WE Geyser factory in Krugersdorp, the GridCar electric vehicle development centre in Pretoria, the MTN trigeneration plant in Johannesburg, City Power headquarters in Johannesburg, the Aurora Lighting showroom in Rivonia, and other places of energy interest.
Students are required to pay for the transport for these field trips, and must each deposit R900 into the following UJ cost centre:
Geography: Tours & Excursions 05.05.078005.20.16200 (no VAT payable).
If your company or bursar pays your tuition, a separate payment must be made into the account above. Do not include your transport for field trips as one payment with your tuition fees.
Get a receipt for the Tours & Excursions payment and send a copy to Ms M. Wilbers in D3Lab315 or fax 011-559-2430 or [email protected]
All three modules must be successfully completed before the student may enrol for the second year of study. During this year a two further modules and a research project must be completed.
Second year modules:
ENS0017 – Energy Policy Formulation – 20 credits ENS0057 – Energy Modelling – 20 credits ENS0067 – Energy Studies Research Project – 30 credits
