MDM 4UI CULMINATING PROJECT

Written Report, Presentation and Critique

Objective: Pick a math tool of the course, apply it to the data, and then use the interpretation to test the truth of your hypothesis.

The following assignment is to be completed and handed in by ______June 13, 2017___ . Students are to make themselves familiar with pages vii to xvi of the text. It is the student’s responsibility to understand key words like written report, mathematical analysis, communications technology, oral presentation, and critiquing.

Format: 1. Choose a topic of your own choice, as long as it is agreed upon with the teacher. (Criteria: An issue that involves the organization and analysis of a large amount of data)

2. Research the topic using the Internet, magazines, books, journals, texts, library resources and primary surveys. Keep track of all relevant information for a Works Cited page.

3. Decide on which statistical tools are applicable for analyzing your hypothesis. Use these tools as subheadings when writing the body of your written report. These subheadings, which contain the interpretation of the calculations, must refer to the appropriate appendix. The appendices contain the related calculations that were performed in Fathom2 or Excel.

4. I would be surprised if the body of your written report has fewer than 3 or more than 6 typed pages. The written report should also include a title page, a table of contents, a References page (APA style) and Appendices containing the raw data and mathematical calculations.

5. You should use clear, concise, and persuasive prose. You can use first person perspective and a conversational tone (“We settled in at the library and started flipping pages, looking at the right data and trying not to be distracted by articles about hockey”), but don’t be sloppy or use excessive slang (“We finally found the library and some mags, but were bummed by all the hockey articles.”) Approach the writing as if you are preparing it for a non-expert. I will deduct marks for grammar errors but will add points for writing that holds the reader’s attention while being serious, not silly. It should be simple, honest and interesting—the kind of report that you would find informative and enjoy reading.

6. Plan a 23-25 min Seminar on your topic to share the analysis you have carried out with the class. Remember to use some communications technology and visual aids such as the overhead projector, TI 83 Plus calculator, Fathom software, Internet, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, etc.. Arrange access to these aids well in advance, so that you will know how to use them before you present. Ensure there is evidence of preparation for the seminar.

7. Presenters are to respond to audience questions about their statistical analysis, and will be critiqued by both their peers and teacher.

8. Free samples: See what two new teachers put together. http://www.brocku.ca/cmt/mdm4u/intro.htm Marking Scheme:

The investigation will be graded out of 125. Marks will be awarded for neatness and accuracy.

 Checkpoints 25  Work is complete, and project is on-schedule  Specific requirements of each checkpoint have been met.

 Organization and neatness 10  Title page that clearly states the hypothesis  Table of contents  Conclusion that includes any reservations  Tables, charts and graphs in appendices  References aka Works cited.  Spelling and grammar

 Research information 10  In-depth knowledge of topic.  Good use of correctly cited sources. Triangulation of data sources.  Is there possible sampling bias or response bias?  Research has accounted for extraneous variables?  Research and analysis has provided directions for further research?  Raw data is in its own appendix

 Mathematical Analysis 50  20 tools (See ‘Presentation Requirements’ below)  Analyze the data  Infer characteristics about the data.  Test the hypothesis.

 Presentation 25  Presentation 23-25 minutes.  Do not read your report. (This will result in 0 for the presentation.)  In-depth knowledge of topic.  In-depth mathematical analysis of topic. This demonstrates your understanding of the skills and concepts of MDM 4UI  Interesting and creative. The class learns and enjoys.  Be ready to present on time with no preparation delay.

 Critiquing 5  Effectively critique five presentations

I will be available each class for students to ask questions and give direction when needed.
