La Joya Independent School District School Health Advisory Council Minutes January 31, 2012 8:30- 10:30 am The School Health Advisory Council President, Mr. Jaime Fernandez was absent during the meeting. The meeting was conducted by Mr. Jose Luis Trigo, PE Health Coordinator for the District. Mrs. Marissa Saenz presented on the Parental Involvement Program for the Juarez/Lincoln cluster. The highlights of her presentation were the different programs that she has available for parents to attend during the school year. Parents can attend day and night classes to learn the various topics throughout the year. She works through several organizations to get donations for needy families during Christmas time and other times of need during the year. Mr. Eutimio Garcia, Parental Involvement Coordinator for the La Joya cluster also mentioned some of the initiatives that they have to involve parents. Mrs. Marina Lopez, from the Rio Grande Valley Juvenile Diabetes Association was our main speaker to address how school districts need to address children with type I diabetes in our schools. She mentioned that from one day to the next her son who was nine years old at the time had been diagnosed with type I diabetes and how she had to intervene immediately to get him interventions to assist him with the diabetes. She will be working with our school nurse and parental involvement to meet with parents to explain to them what they need to be conscious about their children with type I diabetes. She mentioned that she has a parent support her that meets in Edinburg Hospital to discuss interventions for these children with type I diabetes. Her son is now eleven years and he has learned to constantly monitor his sugar levels to ensure they are under normal conditions. Mrs. Lopez stressed on the importance that everyone that works with a diabetic child needs to know what to do in case there is a problem. She also mentioned that their diet is also very important so that it does not affect his sugar level by eating the wrong foods. Mr. Trigo also gave on overview of the eight components of the coordinated school health. It was mentioned that the volleyball tournament for the staff is coming up on Feb. 23 and 24 at the old Juarez/lincoln high school. The meeting was closed at 10:30 am.
