JOHN ALLEN NEWMAN ON THE OCCASION 6 OF HIS 30TH YEAR AS SENIOR PASTOR OF THE 7 SANCTUARY AT MT. CALVARY; PROVIDING AN 8 EFFECTIVE DATE. 9

10 WHEREAS, Jacksonville has always been blessed in having an 11array of houses of worship for those seeking solace and spiritual 12guidance; and 13 WHEREAS, the Mount Calvary fellowship was established in 1892 14in a structure located at the corner of Stonewall and Park Streets; 15subsequently, in 1895, the congregation purchased a sturdy white 16frame church at the corner of Spruce and Dora Streets; and 17 WHEREAS, today, and for thirty years, the Sanctuary of Mount 18Calvary has been led by its dynamic pastor and Shepherd, John Allen 19Newman who has guided the Sanctuary’s growth and nourished his 20flock’s hunger for the Word; and 21 WHEREAS, a graduate of Eastern University, a Christian 22University in Philadelphia, and Philadelphia’s Palmer Theological 23Seminary, Pastor Newman was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree 24from Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg, Virginia; he 25subsequently pursued graduate courses at the University of North 26Florida; and 27 WHEREAS, Pastor Newman’s considerable communications skills 28enabled him to uplift, teach and inspire through modern media in 29Jacksonville, hosting “Gospel Vibrations” and “First Coast Sunrise” 30on radio and “Real Life with John Allen Newman” on Comcast Channel 2 17 on Sunday mornings; and 2 WHEREAS, Pastor Newman has made valuable, lasting 3contributions in the civic arena in his service on the Board of 4Directors of the Jacksonville Port Authority, the Jacksonville 5Urban League Board of Directors, the Mayor’s Council on Community 6Reconciliation, the Sheriff’s Advisory Board and numerous other 7bodies; and 8 WHEREAS, owing to his gifted, spiritual leadership, Pastor 9Newman has travelled extensively spreading the Word abroad, 10throughout the Caribbean, in Mexico and in Europe; he has appeared 11in a myriad of publications including The Wall Street Journal, 12Sister to Sister Magazine, Upscale Magazine and The Florida Times- 13Union; he has been interviewed on NPR (National Public Radio) by 14nationally recognized journalist Juan Williams; and Pastor Newman 15authored the book, I Am The Rose, that inspired countless women; 16and 17 WHEREAS, for thirty years, the Reverend Dr. John Allen Newman 18has been the Shepherd of the Sanctuary at Mount Calvary, and 19generations of our brothers and sisters have come to see the Light 20and know the Word largely through Pastor John Allen Newman’s 21preaching and example and it is fitting that we recognize and honor 22this milestone in his life and in the venerable history of the 23Sanctuary; now therefore 24 BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville: 25 Section 1. The City Council does hereby recognize and 26honor the Reverend Dr. John Allen Newman on the occasion of his 30th 27year as Senior Pastor of the Sanctuary at Mount Calvary and wishes 28him continued successes in the years ahead. 29 Section 2. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become 30effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective 31without the Mayor's signature. 1 - 2 - 1
