1 Initiative Title:

Economics of Model Based Manufacturing (EMBM)

1.1 R&D Objectives

There has been an acceleration of MBD and MBE practices throughout industry. The use of CAD models has become increasingly effective in downstream functions such as manufacturing and quality because of increased productivity and increase of quality in the process. The use of CAD models can aid in the automation of CAM and CMM programming. These trends have been most pronounced in high value-added manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, automotive and semiconductors, but the techniques are applicable for all sectors. This project aims to further drive the acceleration of MBE practices by further documenting the economic benefits of Model based Manufacturing. This project will focus on the downstream benefits and cost avoidance in using Model Based Definition. This project will look at many processes throughout the supply chain including:  Prerelease of a design  Procurement of product  Manufacturing/assembling of product

In support of this project, industry sector-specific pilots will be undertaken to obtain a significant amount of data to support the studies detailed in section 1.3.

1.2 Overview of the Initiative

The goal of this project is to develop a robust and comprehensive ROI study for Model Based Manufacturing. To follow the process from design concept through downstream manufacturing and quality, throughout the value chain and determine upstream and downstream cost avoidance opportunities. Several motivations to do this include:

 Aid in the Cross-Functional adaption and awareness  Industry needs more data to support this  Cost reduction for processes, and products

3 Manufacturing Technology Platform (MTP)

 Time reduction in product and process development  Streamlining of the value chain

1.3 Planned Work, Resources and Timing

This project will be a two year IMS project that will proceed through three phases detailed below.

Phase I: Shaping the Initiative This phase will consist of two major activities. First, the background of each participating project (and/or partner) will be documented as it relates to MBM. These contributions will be assembled into the first IMS delieverable (D1 – MBM Baseline) wich will serve as a common reference point for the project and initiate the process of sharing best practices. Once the baseline is established and the partners fully understand each others capabilities and commercial interests. The second major activity will be the confirmation of the studies needed for this project. This will result in D2 – MBM Study Requirements which will refine the studies in section 3. This will also make the studies quantifiable and have responsibility assigned to it.

Phase II: Pilot Identification and Data Gathering Phase II will conduct the targeted research in support of the objectives identified in D2 and in section 3. The first activity of this phase is to target certain parts/products and certain processes where data can be gathered to support D2. This first deliverable will be D3 – MBM Pilots Identified. After D3, the data results gathering starts. The data gathering portion of this project will that the majority of time. Each study will have diffenent results needed and will be detailed in section 3. Once the requirements of section 3 have been completed D4 - MBM Data results will be completed.

Phase III: Documentation

4 Manufacturing Technology Platform (MTP)

Phase III will conclude the project. It will document the results from the pilots, document best practices, and document project results. The result will be D5 – MBM Final Report. This phase will also identify the next technical barriers and future research to be conducted. After the report is finished, it is expected that other studies will come for the activities done in this project.

Leadership of the phases has been assigned in the following ways. The project coordinator (USA) will lead Phase I and Phase III which signify the opening and closing of the initiative.

1.4 Participating Regions, Projects involved and Partners

It is expected that project members from each region must have a minimum of one industry member, and in addition, may have supportive academic research partners.
