203 Lecture Times: T/R 9:00 – 10:15 AM in CM159 T/R 10:30-11:45 AM in CM 159
Textbook: Anatomy and Physiology, eighth edition, Rod R. Seeley, Trent D. Stephens and Philip Tate Supplements: Human Anatomy and Physiology Biology 203 Lecture Notebook, Marilyn M. Shannon Laboratory Guide for Biology 203 Human Anatomy and Physiology, Marilyn M. Shannon
Optional: Anatomy and Physiology Revealed CD’s. Volumes 1 and 2 are extremely useful for Biology 203.
Introduction:
Biology 203 is the first semester of a two-semester introduction to the structure and function of the human body.
The Lecture The lectures emphasize the physiology (function) of the body. Attending lecture along with considerable out-of-class study is essential for your success in this course.
Recitation The recitation portion of the course is integrated into the lecture. Critical thinking skills will be developed as relationships between structure and function are examined.
The Laboratory The laboratory will emphasize anatomy, giving you hands-on experience with a variety of anatomical models and preserved specimens.
Biology 203 Page 1 Tests:
There will be four lecture exams, two laboratory practical exams, and eight lab quizzes scheduled during the semester.
Lecture Exams: Each of the one hour lecture exams will contain 50 multiple-choice questions and will be worth 100 points. The final lecture exam will not be cumulative.
Lab Practicals: The two 60-item practicals will test your ability to recognize and name anatomical structures.
Lab Quizzes: Eight 10-item lab quizzes are scheduled during the semester, four before the first practical and four after the first practical. Each will cover material from the previous week. Your lowest lab quiz score from each half of the semester will be dropped so that you can earn a total of 60 points from the lab quizzes. You may take a quiz only in the lab for which you are registered. There are no make-ups for laboratory quizzes.
Make-up Exam Policy:
Make-up exams: A limited number of make-up exams may be given due to extenuating circumstances on an individual basis. Consult me immediately if you must miss a lecture exam or lab practical by leaving a message on my office answering machine (481-5435) before the exam is given. If more than one exam or practical is missed, make-up test arrangements for a second make-up will require the Biology Chair's approval, based on evidence of extenuating circumstances for both missed tests.
Lecture exams: Make-up exams for all missed lecture tests will be scheduled at the end of the semester. All make-up lecture exams consist of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short essay.
Lab practicals: Lab practicals need to be taken the same week they are scheduled, if they cannot be taken at the assigned time. Due to the lab space and time required to provide these tests, an incomplete grade will be the only option offered for make-up lab practicals after the week of the scheduled practical.
Lab Quizzes: No make-ups are permitted for lab quizzes, even in another lab class during the same week it is scheduled. Any lab quiz not taken at the scheduled time will result in score of 0. However, your lowest lab score for each half of the semester will be dropped.
Biology 203 Page 2 Grading Policy:
There is a single grade given for the course. Final grades are determined primarily by the total points accumulated. A student must earn a passing grade in the laboratory to earn a passing grade in the course.
Lecture Exam 1 100 Grading Scale Points Needed Lecture Exam 2 100 A 90 – 100 % 594 – 660 pts Lecture Exam 3 100 B 80 – 89 % 528 – 593 pts Lecture Exam 4 100 C 70 – 79% 462 – 527 pts Lab Practical 1 100 D 60 – 69% 396 – 461 pts Lab Practical 2 100 F <60% <396 pts Lab Quizzes 60 Total Possible Points 660
Last Day to Withdraw from Class - March 21, 2008
March 21, 2008 is the last day you can withdraw from classes without receiving an “F” grade on your transcript. If circumstances arise causing you to discontinue the class, you must go through official withdrawal procedures (submit a drop/add form to the Registrar’s Office) or drop your class through OASIS. Failing to submit this form will result in “F” grades for courses not completed.
Academic Honesty:
It is essential that students do not cheat nor allow another student to cheat. Students will be treated as mature adults and are expected to uphold their own honesty and integrity. Any student caught being academically dishonest (i.e. cheating) will automatically fail the course.
Instructor’s Office Hours:
Office Hours: Tuesday 10:15-10:30 AM (CM159) Thursday 8:00 - 8:45 AM (SB 382) 10:15-10:30 AM (CM159) and by appointment

Biology 203 Page 3 Additional Help: Below is a list of resources that are available to help you succeed in this course.
Lecture Help: 1. Lecture Supplemental Instruction Weekly help sessions are scheduled through CASA (Center for Academic Support and Advancement) and are available to all students at no cost. These sessions are conducted by students leaders who have recently completed the course successfully. Individual tutoring may also be available through CASA (G21 Kettler Hall; 481-6817). Lecture SI times will be announced.
2. Lecture Study Organizer The lecture study organizer recommends chapter questions that are useful in preparing for lecture exams.
3. Practice Lecture Test Questions A handout with sample lecture test questions will be provided before each lecture exam.
4. Attending and Recording Lecture Attending lecture along with considerable out-of-class study is essential for your success in this course. Students often feel that audio taping the lectures is helpful.
Lab Help: 1. Lab Supplemental Instruction (Open Labs) These labs are open to all Biology 203/204 students, and will be held weekly, except the first week of class and during weeks in which a lab practical is scheduled. Open labs provide additional study time and are supervised by a qualified student leader. Times to be announced.
2. Sample lab practical questions Practical lab practical questions will be set up during the review labs prior to each lab practical so that you may be better prepared for the exam.
Biology 203/204 Websites: 1. http://users.ipfw.edu/mclellak/ Cumulative grades may be accessed. The website also contains back-up copies of the course syllabus, links to the textbook web site, and photographs of the lab models.
2. http://users.ipfw.edu/shannon/ This website contains back-up copies of the course Notebook and Lab Guide.
DISABILITIES STATEMENT: If you have a disability and need assistance, special arrangements can be made to accommodate most needs. Contact the Director of Services for Students with Disabilities (Walb, room 113, telephone number 481-6658), as soon as possible to work out the details. Once the
Biology 203 Page 4 Director has provided you with a letter attesting to your needs for modification, bring the letter to me. For more information, please visit the web site for SSD at http://www.ipfw.edu/ssd/
Biology 203 Page 5 Biology 203 Laboratory Class times and Instructors:
All lab classes meet in SB 377. University policy prohibits students from attending a lab for which they are not registered, unless they have permission of the laboratory instructor. If you must miss a lab, use the following information to arrange for a make-up. Missed lab quizzes may not be made-up or taken in another lab under any circumstances.

3-Digit I.D. Number and Assigned Seat Number for Exams:
You will be assigned a three digit number to use on all exams and quizzes. All grades will be recorded and posted using this private number. You may record your 3 digit I.D. number here: ______
You will be given an assigned seat for lecture exams. You may record your seat number here: ______
There will also be assigned seating for lab practicals.
Weather Cancellations:
Decisions to cancel classes due to weather are made by the administrators of the university, not by your instructor. If you think IPFW may have declared an adverse weather closing, listen to local radio or television announcements (including CATV (Comcast Channel 5 or Verizon FiOS Channel 30), go to www.ipfw.edu (a notice will appear at the top of the page), or call the campus weather emergency number, 481-6050, for a recorded message. Any cancelled exam will be held during the next class meeting; any exam scheduled the class after a cancellation will be postponed one class.
