Newspaper Project – Imperialism (Ch 21 and 22)

Instructions

Students will work in small groups to create 3 newspapers over a given region. The three newspaper types are factual, partisan, and tabloid. In the factual newspaper, students will simply present the facts: who, what, where, when, why. In the partisan newspaper, students will write from a specific point of view, either that of the imperialist nations or of the region that was colonized. Their articles and information will reflect this biased point of view. In the tabloid newspaper, students will write a bombastic, over the top, sensationalized account of the facts. Students will start with the basic facts and elaborate to their sensationalized conclusions.

For each newspaper, students will write 4 articles. The first article should be the headline story. Each article should include some kind of graphic, picture, chart, etc. The articles must follow the rules of the specific type of newspaper. The factual newspaper will have factual articles, the partisan newspaper will have partisan articles, and the tabloid newspaper will have tabloid articles.

Outline

To help students outline their newspapers, each group will be given Outline sheets. Students should use these to brainstorm their ideas for titles, articles, graphics, etc.

Final Newspaper

When ready, each group will hand-write their final newspapers on blank computer paper or construction paper. Some things to keep in mind: - Pay attention to the format and design! Newspapers should be easy to read, and the design should help accomplish this. - Use good handwriting. - Make sure you have 4 articles and at least 4 graphics per newspaper. - Make your articles related to the newspaper. Don’t write a tabloid article in your factual newspaper. - Consider pre-writing your articles. If you write it for the first time on your final newspaper, you will make mistakes. - Be creative! It’s allowed.
