National Leadership Conference 2007
Many CSC members attended the 2007 Canadian Student Leadership Conference in London, Ontario, accompanied by Carol Gray, Frank di Bello and the Student Life Advisors. It was a very memorable experience. Students were able to meet other Leadership students from across the country, and were able to share all of our ideas and experiences from our schools with one another. We also enjoyed some exceptional speeches from Alvin Law, Andy Thibideault, Georgette Read, Tom Jackson, Major Beardsley, and Ian Tyson. The Pre-Conference Tour in Toronto and Niagara was an amazing bonding opportunity for the students of the Lester B. Pearson School Board, and the CSC encourages all young members that if they are given the opportunity to go, it will be the experience of a life time!
Governing Board Workshops
Students who are members of their Governing Board were reminded again to sign up for the Workshop for all Governing Board members on October 20th or 21st.
Feedback to the New Food Policy
CSC members were given the Internet link and invited to send their concerns about the Food Policy and the application of this policy as it impacts our cafeterias to the Lester B. Pearson Food Services Department. David D’Arienzo, from St. Thomas High School, has already scheduled a meeting with Anne Tetro, Manager of Food Services, to further discuss the this issue at his school, and we hope that other students take advantage of this opportunity at their schools. The 3 rd Annual Winter Cotillion 2008
Kim Noble (MAC), will be the head of the Cotillion subcommittee. The Cotillion, which is a dinner dance for students from across the Board, is scheduled for February 2nd, at the Dorval Airport Hilton. Planning is now underway, so that advertising will be ready by December.
Consultations
The CSC was reminded of upcoming Consultations: Policy on Enrollment Criteria 2008-2009, Internet Policy, and the Safe and Caring Schools Policy. We stressed the importance of the role of the CSC in responding to these Consultations. The students were asked to read and try to understand these Consultations in preparation for discussion at the next meeting, and it was decided that we would address the Safe and Caring Schools Policy section by section.
Provincial Student Leadership Conference
The Provincial Student Leadership Conference will be held from November 16th- 18th, at Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School. The theme is “Express Yourself”. The guest speakers include Ian Tyson and Scott Hamel. Transportation and billeting will be provided for students who live far from PCHS, especially those who attend Beurling Academy, Lakeside Academy, LCCHS, Westwood and Mac.

Feedback on Food Policy
We welcomed guests Anne Tetro, Manager of LBPSB Food Services, Mylaine Cardin, LBPSB Dietician, and Janet Maccullie, LBPSB Food Technician. We discussed our concerns about our school cafeterias, e.g. how appetizing the food is, displays for prices and menu, amount of food wasted, etc. We wrote down our concerns and suggestions about the Food Policy, which will be collated by them. They also showed us an educational game about healthy eating that they would like to pilot with Secondary 3 students. The CSC felt it had potential, and students to animate the game and including prizes to make it more exciting.
Consultation: Policy on Enrollment Criteria
The CSC recommends that any student already attending a school should always be accepted back in, therefore that (5) Students currently attending from outside the territory of the Board, should be included with priority (1). Also, The CSC agreed that there is a sentence in Note (c), on page 4, that should be revised; members will discuss the suggested wording via the CSC Conference on First Class.
Consultation: Safe and Caring Schools Policy
We began our discussions on the Safe and Caring Schools Policy. We first broke into small discussion groups then returned to the larger group to address the section on Harassment. Many issues were clarified for the students with regards to some of the vocabulary. Some students expressed a need for more consistency among teachers and administrators regarding consequences that are given to students. We discussed the significance of Peer Mediation, and that “Community Service” to describe a punishment should be reworded so as not to be confused with the good work that is done by students involved with “Community Service” activities.
