TROLLEYS

Purpose

This safe work practice (SWP) has been written to train and inform employees in the safe handling and use of trolleys, including flat-bed, hand-truck, stock-picker, panel/mattress trolley and pallet jack. Only trained employees in this SWP should use a trolley.

Procedure

Caution! Trolleys must be used as instructed by this SWP. Under no circumstances are users to ride on or stand on a trolley. Trolleys are designed to transport goods, hardware or stock only. Trolleys have wheels which move the trolley along the ground when pushed. If the trolley wheels hit a bump or other surface such as a wall, the trolley may become unstable and unsecured items on the trolley may fall off.

1. Assess each and every manual handling task. In all instances, utilise mechanical aids to shift goods, e.g. trolleys or pallet jack. If mechanical aids are not practicable then apply safe lifting techniques as per training. 2. For personal protective equipment (PPE) wear fully enclosed shoes. Warehouse employees are to wear toe-capped boots. Gloves may also be used where nip and pinch points are present, such as with a pallet jack. 3. Under no circumstances are users to stand on or ride on a trolley. 4. Select an appropriate, reliable and well suited trolley for the task. The trolley must be able to support the goods. 5. Examine the trolley for functionality. Check that the wheels are properly attached and free of debris. Ensure the trolley frame is not damaged. 6. Prepare the intended destination of the goods and decide on the safest method and route of travel. There is the potential for collision with objects and people. Use a second person as a guide. Conduct the work out of busy periods if risk of collision is high. 7. When loading or unloading a trolley, assistance from others may be required for items such as furniture and mattresses (two-person or team lift). 8. Secure the goods to the trolley with straps or ties, if required. Unbalanced goods may topple over. 9. Push the trolley to the destination in a forward direction with both hands. Push the trolley rather than pull. Hold the trolley by the handles. Concentration is required during the move. Avoid interruptions & use caution. Note: pallet jacks require both pushing and pulling forces to be applied while manoeuvring with or without a load, or to fit underneath a pallet.

I acknowledge that I have read and understand the above procedures and requirements and agree to abide by them at all

times.
