Astronomy Week 1 (8/12 8/16)

Astronomy Week 1 (8/12 – 8/16)

SAST1: Students will explain the tools used by astronomers to study electromagnetic radiation to determine composition, motions, and other physical attributes of astronomical objects.

SAST1a: Explain the challenges faced by astronomers due to the properties of light and the vast distances in the cosmos

Each of these stations need to be done on your own sheet of paper and stapled, in order, to this coversheet. When you have competed a station, put a check mark by it. Be sure when doing the left page assignment you use at least 5 different colors and they need to have purpose (i.e.- 5 squiggly lines each of different color drawn on the page does not count). Please talk to me if you don’t have any ideas.

Station 1: KhanAcademy– “Scale of the Large” & “Scale of the Small”.

Left Page: Look up William Blake – Auguries of Innocence. Write the first four lines and explain how they relate to astronomy.

Station 2: Read Chapter 1 in your books. Write down any notes you feel are relevant to standard SAST1a. Notes need to be 1 page (no more, no less).

Left page assignment: From the Review Questions at the end of the chapters; Chapter 1 (1 – 11) choose 8 questions to answer. Be sure to use different colors when answering the questions.

Station 3: Vocabulary (Ch 1, 9-1 & 9.2) - Use your book, or the internet, to write down the definitions of:

[15 terms] Scientific Notation, solar system, planet, star, astronomical unit (AU), light-year (ly), galaxy, Milky Way Galaxy, stellar parallax, parsec, magnitude-distance formula, distance modulus, luminosity, red- shifted, blue-shifted

Make a left page drawing a picture, sketch, or printout of at least 5 terms using colored pencils.

Station 4: Math Problems. Work out problems 1 – 10 from page 10

Make a left page showing all the equations needed to solve the problems. Include a legend that explains what each of the variables means.

Station 5: Lab – Introduction to Optics

Make a left page describing how the lab relates to parallax and the similarities between how you measured the height of the stadium and how astronomers use it to measure close-by stars.

Station 5: Take the quiz, either online or on paper.

Left Page Assignment: Quiz corrections for every question you missed
