LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD REGULAR BOARD MEETING

The School Board of the Parish of Lafayette, State of Louisiana, met in regular session at its meeting place, the Lafayette Parish School Board Administrative Building, Board Room, Lafayette, Louisiana, on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 5:30 P.M. pursuant to notice given in writing to every member.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Shelton J. Cobb, President; Hunter Beasley, Vice-President; Tommy Angelle, Kermit Bouillion, Tehmi Chassion(entered late), Mark Cockerham, and Rae Trahan, Board Members; Dr. Pat Cooper, Secretary-Treasurer/Superintendent

MEMBERS ABSENT: Gregory Awbrey and Mark Babineaux(ill)

I. MEETING OPENINGS The meeting was called to order by Cobb and opened with a prayer by Cockerham. Bouillion led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

OPENING COMMENTS –SUPERINTENDENT Superintendent Cooper reminded the Board members about the Clean School Bus Tour on Monday, August 6. He also informed them that the Technology Department would be providing them with LPSS email addresses. Dr. Cooper then showed a power point presentation on how the district is moving forward, the celebration of the coming school year and what we are trying to accomplish.

2. Lafayette Parish School System and The Education Chamber Joint Cooperative Agreement Superintendent Cooper informed the Board that in 2003 the school system went into partnership with The Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce to put together peer review committees to look at human resources, facilities, finance, transportation and technology. Dr. Cooper said that we were going back to the drawing board, because he thought the Chamber had a lot to offer to the school district in terms of getting us into the 21st Century, and allow the Lafayette Parish School District to relate to the community in terms of the economy, technology and various issues.

Jerry Greig, Volunteer Chairman of the Board of The Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce which represents 1300 companies in the Lafayette area and about 2500 individual members. He introduced Andy Begnaud, Head of the Education Division, and informed the Board that the Chamber has a long standing relationship with education, because of the importance of hiring an educated and prepared workforce. They also reported that education is very important to the success of the community, and that they are very supportive of Dr. Cooper’s 100%In…100%Out program.

Mr. Greig reported the Chamber is prepared to embark on the peer review technology plan, by convening 8-10 chamber members and volunteers with skills in information technology business process. He believes that by the first quarter of the new year, they will be able to deliver an update to the Board. Mr. Greig thanked the Board for allowing The Education Chamber to collaborate with the Lafayette Parish School System through a Peer Review Team to assess technology and to provide best practices recommendations in this area.

Superintendent Cooper said the school system needs to know what it is going to take to get to the 21st century in terms of technology, and that he appreciated all efforts given by the Chamber.

Board President Cobb said that the Board appreciates efforts by all groups and looks forward to working with them.

ITEMS PULLED FROM ACTION 1. Approval of the 2012-2013 Pupil Progression Plan for Lafayette Parish School 9 System Motion (Beasley, Chassion) that the Board accept the Lafayette Parish School System Pupil Progression Plan for the 2012-2013 school year as presented with the following exception: the phrase on page 53 that says AP classes will be weighted on a 4.5 scale. If the student attempts the AP Exam, the class grade will be weighted on a 5.0 scale – that it be striked from the Pupil Progression Plan and accept remainder of Pupil Progression Plan. Motion carried.

B. Board President/Members Comments Bouillion reported that schools will open soon and he is certain that all teachers are getting their classrooms prepared. He wished good luck to all students, teachers, staff and hopes for a successful school year.

Trahan offered condolences to the Terry Guilbeau family, and she wished for all a safe start of school. Mrs. Trahan commented on an article in The Independent, by saying she doesn’t think she is absent minded, that she had been out of town, and that she is not difficult to reach. She said that she owns a business and is the only employee, therefore, she cannot attend workshops that are held during work hours. She also addressed the comment that she was not supportive of the bond issue regarding Youngsville Middle Schools. Mrs. Trahan said she didn’t support it because there was no plan, she asked that she be shown where the money is going. She also said that she absolutely wants Youngsville to get schools, and that she is in collaboration with the Mayor of Youngsville and the Superintendent. She said that she would continue to ask questions for her constituents, and asked that workshops be held on non business times.

Angelle congratulated all employees that were hired, and wished the best to everyone, and thanked all the people who took advantage of school supply sales in the Carencro area.

Beasley congratulated the new employees, and looks forward to continuing a relationship with The Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Beasley said that he had never seen so many people work so fast to get Northside High School looking good. He wished the best to all LPSS staff, teachers, and students and believes everything will go smoothly.

Cobb congratulated everyone who received promotions and are fulfilling their life dreams. He said that we would have a most successful school year. He also welcomed the children back and said that he expected them to do their best. Mr. Cobb said that as a new school year approaches, we are going to do better, that he is encouraged by the community, and that we are willing to do whatever we have to do to make the school system successful.
